Gandhi's birthday, Kathmandu floods, care for all!

September 30, 2024

Late breaking update: As we are going to press news of flooding in Kathmandu, Nepal is pouring in. Please keep the people and animal shelters in your thoughts and prayers! As of now almost 200 people have been killed with many missing as persistent downpours triggered flooding and landslides burying people and animals! Help Animals India will accept donations for Nepal animal groups affected by the unprecedented rainfall and match your donations too! Some animal shelters have had to relocate and many rescues of outlying areas for the animals is going on! Please mention “Nepal” if you can donate, may all be safe!

Dear friend of India and Nepal’s animals: We hope this update finds you well!

In honor of upcoming “Gandhi Jayanthi” on October 2nd (His Birthday) Mahatma Gandhi famously said, “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.” This quote reflects his belief in compassion and respect for all living beings, emphasizing the ethical treatment of animals as a measure of a society’s values.

We know you all agree with this! Here is how Help Animals India is working to help make India live up to Gandhi’s profound vision.

Here at our project in the ancient and sacred city of Varanasi we are turning fear of dogs into love of dogs.

These numbers below show sterilization operation figures (includes vaccination) in Varanasi where we have been helping for many years and here are the last few years and treatment includes rescue and medical care:

Now our team is completing our 12th annual birth control camp in Sarnath near Varanasi, the sacred land where the Buddha gave his first teaching! 350 spay/neuters/vaccination and an additional 250-300 revaccinations are being done! The entire area is transformed from fear of dogs to love of dogs!

Happier dogs are going home to a much healthier and happier life! Please take a moment to see the short video here.

An unwanted and abandoned male calf’s life hung in balance after a brutal dog attack left him severely injured and in agony. But fate had other plans! A group of compassionate villagers rushed to his rescue, bringing to the safety of our Varanasi shelter. With timely medical care and love, the calf is now on the road to recovery and will be sent to a “gaushala” (cow sanctuary) . A testament to the power of kindness and the impact of community coming together to save a life. This incredible story of rescue and recovery reminds us that even in the darkest moments, there is always hope and always help available.

Unfortunately due to the dairy consuming habits of over 1.3 billion people World Animal Foundation writes: “According to the latest data, India has the highest cattle Population of any country in the world of 307.5 million.” Our dedicated grantee Karuna Society saves hundreds from slaughter and abandonment as they can.
