Help animals in India and Nepal - a lot going on!

February 17, 2025

Stray dogs may wander through life with no home, but their loyalty and love are unwavering. In their eyes, you’ll see a story of survival, hope, and the silent desire for a little kindness. They may not ask for much, but they give all their heart… Dogs are often seen as symbols of loyalty, guardianship, and companionship and they seem to embody their own purpose at the Sacred Ganges! So let’s continue to help them as we can!

If you go to almost any city or village in India or Nepal you will see street dogs. Learn more about India and Nepal’s community dogs here.

Our main project has been to help in one of the most ancient cities of the world Varanasi also called Benares or Kashi. And also in nearby Sarnath, where the Buddha gave his first teaching! Now we have gotten the project its own website!

Encouraging Feedback from an ardent supporter who went to visit the Kumbhmela gathering via Varanasi…

She wrote “The dogs were looking so much better than when I saw them last about 5-6 years back. They looked healthier, far fewer on the streets and seemed to walk with a purpose 😊 I can’t attribute it to anything except the presence of the Help Animals India team on the streets of Varanasi!”

Many other different types of animals are helped as we can! Whether they are wild animals who need rescue and are put back safely in the wild, like this rare otter rescue:

Or the rescues are farm animals needing shelter from being abandoned on the street or saved from being slaughtered.

Or neighborhood kitties who just want a chance to live peacefully and make friends without yowling in the territories (because they are not neutered) or having endless unwanted and at risk kitties (if not being spayed).

We fund the education efforts at countless schools to reach children at the tender ages to gently influence them to care for animals!

And at our grantee STRAW India who did this beautiful graphic and writes:

Let’s share the love with ALL animals! Whether furry, feathered, or scaled, every creature deserves kindness and compassion. Choose love, go cruelty-free, and make the world a little brighter for our animal friends! 🐶🐱🐰🐮🐷🐔

But what about India’s cows, many of whom you will see living on the streets?

In India, where cows are revered and considered sacred by the majority Hindu population, the situation surrounding their protection is complex. Legally, cow slaughter is banned in all but two of India’s 29 states, with exceptions made in areas where non-Hindu populations consume meat. Similarly, buffaloes, crucial for dairy production, are protected from slaughter in most states. However, these laws are often bypassed, as spent cows and buffaloes, along with “surplus” male calves, are frequently inhumanely transported to regions or countries (like Nepal) where slaughter is permitted.

By choosing vegan options and supporting initiatives that advocate for reform in dairy production, you can contribute to a more compassionate and sustainable future.

On behalf of our grantee Karuna Society for Animals and Nature with hundreds of rescued cows! Learn more about India’s sacred cows here.

We will leave you with one of our favorite sweeties!

Here is Lakshmi, 27 years old. She was kept in a religious institution and recognising her inability to manage her physical and medical problems, the owner was convinced to release her and to send her for expert treatment rehabilitation and sanctuary for life!

Our long time grantee is Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre - WRRC at the Elephant Care Facility which is currently home to six majestic elephants. The devoted team, comprising attentive mahouts, dedicated shelter staff, and skilled veterinarians, consistently exceeds expectations in tending to these magnificent creatures. Witnessing their meticulous care and dedication are genuinely heartwarming, contributing immensely to the thriving well-being of these gentle giants.

Help Animals India grants your kind donations to both well-established and emerging animal protection groups who confront daunting obstacles every day in their mission to rescue, shelter and fight for the rights of animals. We work closely with these groups and vouch for their courage, compassion and determination. Our guidance and your donations helps them improve their missions and operations so they can maximize their effectiveness as advocates for and defenders of all animals.

Thanks for reading! We wish you all the best in your efforts to bring happiness and comfort to all!

With deepest gratitude and appreciation from the Help Animals India team, our colleagues in India and Nepal, and the animals we love and serve.
