Nearly half of American teenagers say they are online “constantly” despite concerns about the effects of social media and smartphones on their mental health, according to a new report published Thursday by the Pew Research Center. As in past years, YouTube was the single most popular platform teenagers used — 90% said they watched videos on the site, down slightly from 95% in 2022. Nearly three-quarters said they visit YouTube every day. There was a slight downward trend in several popular apps teens used. For instance, 63% of teens said they used TikTok, down from 67% and Snapchat slipped to 55% from 59%. This small decline could be due to pandemic-era restrictions easing up and kids having more time to see friends in person, but it's not enough to be truly meaningful . X saw the biggest decline among teenage users. Only 17% of teenagers said they use X, down from 23% in 2022, the year Elon Musk bought the platform. Reddit held steady at 14%. The report comes as countries around the world are grappling with how to handle the effects of social media on young people's well-being. Australia recently passed a law banning kids under 16 from social networks, though it's unclear how it will be able to enforce the age limit — and whether it will come with unintended consequences such as isolating vulnerable kids from their peers. Meta's messaging service WhatsApp was a rare exception in that it saw the number of teenage users increase, to 23% from 17% in 2022. Pew also asked kids how often they use various online platforms. Small but significant numbers said they are on them “almost constantly.” For YouTube, 15% reported constant use, for TikTok, 16% and for Snapchat, 13%. As in previous surveys, girls were more likely to use TikTok almost constantly while boys gravitated to YouTube. There was no meaningful gender difference in the use of Snapchat, Instagram and Facebook. Roughly a quarter of Black and Hispanic teens said they visit TikTok almost constantly, compared with just 8% of white teenagers. Rookie quarterback Michael Penix Jr. showed the poise in his first NFL start the Falcons will need to take advantage of their opportunity to end a six-year playoff drought. Powered by a big-play defense that produced two pick-6s, a solid starting debut by Penix and two rushing touchdowns by Bijan Robinson, the Falcons cruised past the hapless New York Giants 34-7 on Sunday. On Sunday night, the Falcons (8-7) received the assist they needed when Tampa Bay lost at Dallas . Because the Falcons swept the Buccaneers, they hold the tiebreaker advantage if they remain tied atop the division. The Falcons have games remaining at Washington on Sunday night and at home against Carolina to close the regular season. If Atlanta wins both games, it would win the division and have a home playoff game. The Falcons are assured of their best record since a 10-6 finish under coach Dan Quinn in 2017, their most recent playoff season. Quinn is in his first season as Washington's coach and has led the Commanders (10-5) to three straight wins, including Sunday's 36-33 victory over Philadelphia. Penix, the No. 8 overall pick in this year's NFL draft, was promoted after coach Raheem Morris benched Kirk Cousins. Penix completed 18 of 27 passes for 202 yards with one interception on a pass that should have been caught by tight end Kyle Pitts. Penix is not a dual-threat quarterback, but he showed the ability to escape pressure in the pocket that Cousins lacks following his 2023 Achilles tendon injury. The left-hander's superior arm strength also was immediately obvious. What’s working Robinson's production provided a safety net for the offense which helped make for a smooth transition to Penix. Robinson had scoring runs of 2 and 4 yards. Robinson has rushed for 10 touchdowns this season. He's the first Atlanta player with 10 more more rushing touchdowns since Devonta Freeman during the 2016 Super Bowl season. Robinson ran for 94 yards on 22 carries and had 103 yards from scrimmage. His 11th game this season with at least 100 yards from scrimmage are the most for the Falcons since Warrick Dunn's 11 in 2005. Morris said Robinson deserves to be considered with Philadelphia's Saquon Barkley in discussions regarding the league's top running backs. “Bijan has been outstanding all year in the things that he’s able to do," Morris said. “He’s special. If it wasn’t for this other guy out in Philly, he’d get a lot more recognition across the league. But that guy is having a special year, and Bijan’s not far behind him.” What needs help With kicker Younghoe Koo on injured reserve and watching from the sideline, Riley Patterson was wide left on his first field-goal attempt from 43 yards. Patterson rebounded to make attempts from 52 and 37 yards. Stock up Jessie Bates III and Matthew Judon each had a pick-6 to highlight a day of big plays for the defense. Arnold Ebiketie had his fifth sack of the season and added a fumble recovery. Kaden Ellis added a strip-sack. He also has five sacks this season, including sacks in four consecutive games. It is the longest streak for Atlanta since Patrick Kerney had sacks in five straight games in 2001. Stock down There was some thought that a change at quarterback could be good news for Pitts, who often seemed to be missing in action with Cousins running the offense. After all, a tight end often is a natural target for quick passes from a rookie making his first start. Instead, Pitts had a poor start to the Penix era when he bobbled his first pass from the left-hander, creating an interception by cornerback Cor’Dale Flott. Pitts caught a 7-yard pass on his only other target. For the season, Pitts has 41 catches for 543 yards and three touchdowns. Injuries There will be much interest in this week's injury report after WR Drake London (hamstring) was hurt in the second half. Morris provided an optimistic postgame outlook on London. CB Antonio Hamilton (quad) did not return after leaving the game in the first half. Key number 8: Bates has four interceptions and four forced fumbles. His combined eight forced turnovers lead the NFL. Next steps The game against Jayden Daniels and the Commanders is a reminder Penix was only the fourth of six quarterbacks selected in the first round of the NFL draft. Mr Gaetz has denied all wrongdoing. The 37-page report by the bipartisan panel includes explicit details of sex-filled parties and holidays that Mr Gaetz, now 42, allegedly took part in from 2017 to 2020 while representing Florida’s western panhandle. The findings conclude that he violated multiple state laws related to sexual misconduct while in office. “The committee determined there is substantial evidence that representative Gaetz violated House rules and other standards of conduct prohibiting prostitution, statutory rape, illicit drug use, impermissible gifts, special favours or privileges, and obstruction of Congress,” the report states. The report brings to a close a nearly four-year investigation into Mr Gaetz, who spent the majority of his time in Washington enmeshed in scandals, which ultimately derailed his nomination by President-elect Donald Trump as attorney general. His political future is uncertain, although Mr Gaetz indicated recently that he would be interested in running for the open Senate seat in Florida. The long-anticipated release of the report comes after at least one Republican joined all five Democrats on the panel earlier this month in a secret vote to release the report about their former colleague despite initial opposition from Republican politicians, including House speaker Mike Johnson, to publishing findings about a former member of Congress. While ethics reports have previously been released after a member’s resignation, it is extremely rare. Mr Gaetz objected to its release, saying last week that he would have “no opportunity to debate or rebut” the findings as a former member of the House. On Monday, Mr Gaetz filed a lawsuit seeking to block the release of the report, which he says contains “untruthful and defamatory information” that would “significantly damage” his “standing and reputation in the community.” Mr Gaetz’s complaint argues he is no longer under the committee’s jurisdiction since he resigned from Congress. “The committee’s position that it may nonetheless publish potentially defamatory findings about a private citizen over whom it claims no jurisdiction represents an unprecedented expansion of Congressional power that threatens fundamental constitutional rights and established procedural protections,” Mr Gaetz’s lawyers wrote in their request for a temporary restraining order. In addition to soliciting prostitution, the Ethics Committee report states that Mr Gaetz “accepted gifts, including transportation and lodging in connection with a 2018 trip to the Bahamas, in excess of permissible amounts”. That same year, investigators say he arranged for his chief of staff to obtain a passport for a woman he was sexually involved with, falsely telling the State Department that she was his constituent. One of the final pieces of “substantial evidence” the committee gathered determined that Mr Gaetz “knowingly and willfully sought to impede and obstruct” the report. The report contains dozens of pages of exhibits, including text messages and financial records, travel receipts and online payments among various people involved. In some of the text exchanges, Mr Gaetz appears to be inviting various women to events, getaways or parties, and arranging air travel and lodging. At one point he asks one woman if she has a “cute black dress” to wear. There are also discussions of shipping goods. One of the exhibits is a text exchange that appears to be between two of the women concerned about their cash flow and payments. In another, a person asks Mr Gaetz for help to pay an educational expense. The often secretive, bipartisan panel has investigated claims against Mr Gaetz since 2021. However, its work became more urgent last month when Mr Trump picked him shortly after election day as his first choice to be the nation’s top law enforcement officer. Mr Gaetz resigned from Congress that same day, putting him outside the purview of the Ethics Committee’s jurisdiction. But Democrats had pressed to make the report public even after Mr Gaetz was no longer a member and had withdrawn as Mr Trump’s choice to lead the Justice Department. A vote on the House floor this month to force the report’s release failed; all but one Republican voted against it.

The event is a shopping experience that demonstrates the 14 different pathways CTE has to offer to Chapel Hill ISD students. “Shops on the Hill is one of our larger showcases that allows us to show the community and our district what our students here at CTE have been working on,” said Josh Culpepper, Director of Career and Technical Education. “Each one of our students is in a pathway that is a career-aligned pathway and allows our students to get hands-on experience at the high school level and be prepared for post-high school.” The 14 Texas Education Agency-approved programs of study at Chapel Hill ISD’s CTC include Animal Science, Audio/Video Production, Business Management, Construction Technology, Cosmetology, Culinary Arts, Engineering, Graphic Design and Multimedia Arts, Health Science, Information Technology, Law Enforcement, Plant Science, Teaching and Training, and Welding. To organize these pathways more effectively, the district introduced The Academies of Chapel Hill, a model designed to group similar career pathways into three focused academies: Business and Industry, Public and Human Services, and Technology and Engineering. “Within those academies, there’s four to five pathways each and they all kind of align together,” Culpepper said. “A lot of our (agriculture)-type pathways and things that deal with produce and animals and culinary are in business and industry. We try and cluster them together... the objective is to find ways to have cross curricular interaction between those pathways.” Because CTC is a business model school, students get to practice real life interactions in a marketplace within the community. “It allows (the community) to come inside and kind of see what we’re all about while also giving them things that are practical for the season,” Culpepper said. At the event, attendees could purchase student-made items such as baked goods or drinks from the culinary department. To help people show off some holiday cheer or Bulldog pride, the graphic design department offered Christmas cards and custom-made spirit shirts. The welding program featured one-of-a-kind metal artwork, and plant science offered floral and wreath arrangements. “We have our Bulldog Blooms program where people can order flowers on a monthly subscription,” Culpepper said. “People can come to our cosmetology and receive services from cosmetology. We’re a very active campus and we have a lot going on not just during the school year, but even during the summer. We offer students chances to work within the district during the summer in a work-based learning program.” This year marked a milestone for the event as it bids farewell to its longtime location in the hallways of the old CTE building. With the newer, state-of-the-art facility under construction , Shops on the Hill will have an updated venue next year. “(The new building) is gonna have more of a mall shop design,” Culpepper said. “So people will be able to see into the shops and enter the shops as if they’re at a real mall.” In his first year as the CTE director, Culpepper emphasized the importance of engaging the community to support the growth of its students. “It’s really a relationship between the district, the community, the students and the teachers for the students,” Culpepper said. “It’s a chance to showcase what they’ve been working on and what they’ve learned and what skills they’ve gained. It’s a chance for our teachers to allow our students to have hands-on experience.” Senior Samantha Rivera has been getting hands-on experience with the construction pathway gaining valuable practice and knowledge about the fundamentals of construction. “I learned a lot about wood and how to use the tools and how to build,” she said. “It’s been interesting.” As one of the many students in the career pathways at Chapel Hill ISD’s CTE, Samantha said she is proud of what she and her peers have learned and accomplished. “It feels good that some of them are taking the path they want to take and know that they’re actually trying to do something with their future life as well,” she said. Culpepper said the community response toward the Shops on the Hill has been positive, allowing people to see what students have been working on. “It kind of opens their eyes to the scope of what we do here at CTE from the outside looking in,” he said. “There is cutting-edge technology being used on a daily basis in our shops.
