Gamification is rapidly reshaping how people consume information and engage with the world. It uses strategies such as clear goals, instant rewards and engaging visuals to make everyday tasks more enjoyable, often in a digital setting. The COVID-19 pandemic nudged consumers to embrace no-contact, instant gratification experiences in an increasingly digital world. Businesses found that gamification attracts new customers while keeping the existing ones engaged. As evidenced by the meteoric rise of the Robinhood investment app , even trading platforms haven’t been able to escape the pull of gamification. While trading gamification attracts new and younger investors to financial markets, a key question arises: do digital engagement strategies shape investor behaviour? Flashy features and poor financial decisions In recent years, fierce competition among online brokers has pushed them to stand out with features beyond lower fees. To boost trading activity, many brokers have implemented gamified features ranging from vibrant colours and celebratory animations, to social ranking boards and frequent price alerts. My recent research shows that these strategies are particularly effective for new investors with lower financial literacy. While it’s effective at attracting users, gamification can lead inexperienced traders to make poor decisions by magnifying their behavioural biases. My co-researchers and I studied the effect of gamification on retail traders’ behaviour using a randomized online experiment. The results echo the widespread concerns that gamification fuels investors’ competitive instincts and their urge to “hit big.” Turning trading into a casino-like experience encourages reckless decision-making. Infamous long-term investor Warren Buffett has also expressed concerns about the potential negative impact of “instant gratification” on investor behaviour. He believes that “too many modern investors have become entranced by speculative investing” and are “simply buying stocks that are trendy.” While it’s important to introduce the younger generation to financial markets , Buffett’s warning resonates at a deeper level. Is the increasingly gamified trading environment equipping new investors with the skills and confidence to build a strong financial future, or is it designed to exploit their weaknesses? And ultimately, how can technology be leveraged to build a healthier, more sustainable economy? Who benefits from financial literacy? My co-researchers and I argue that both retail investors and intermediaries ultimately benefit from boosting financial literacy from an early age — that is, before plunging into the wild waters of financial markets. Ultimately, the responsibility lies with individual investors to take the initiative to understand the fundamentals of financial markets and risk management. By seeking out knowledge before entering markets, they can reduce their risk and become aware of their biases and blind spots. Traders who don’t prioritize their education may end up learning the reality of markets the hard way — often through losses in post-mortem reflection. At the same time, brokerages and trading platforms have both a profit-driven and an ethical stake in promoting financial literacy. Informed users are more likely to become loyal long-term customers who engage more deeply with platforms and trading responsibly over time. Financially literate traders benefit from gamification techniques like price notifications, which allow them to correct their mistakes faster. From an ethical standpoint, financial institutions must reflect on whether they would rather empower a new generation of investors or merely turn them into gamblers. Financial education is key School systems’ improved or renewed efforts to empower students to navigate the economy safely and productively have received significant attention in light of both post-pandemic and inflationary economic challenges . As students move up the education ladder, they could learn about more sophisticated financial products, such as leverage, derivatives or alternative investments. Every investor faces — or will eventually face — unique financial challenges. The real question is: how can we improve investors’ financial literacy at scale without expecting everyone to earn the equivalent of a business degree? AI and the future of financial education This is where artificial intelligence (AI) comes in. AI is experiencing rapid growth and can adapt learning plans based on users’ existing knowledge, unique planning needs, learning pace and preferred engagement formats. This adaptability makes AI a powerful tool for creating learning opportunities for investors by catering to varying learning needs. Wide-scale collaboration among regulators, business educators and financial markets could lead to innovative programs using scalable, user-friendly tools such as chatbots. Such an approach would help improve financial literacy on a large scale and enable evidence-based policy by observing investor behaviour. Improving financial literacy is urgent. As a new generation of traders enters gamified investing, they risk losing their savings due to poor decisions, behavioural biases and excessive trading. Putting an exclamation mark on the end of his five NASCAR Xfinity Series seasons with Joe Gibbs Racing and Stewart-Haas Racing, Riley Herbst led 167 laps to motor to victory in the season finale at Phoenix Raceway. Shortly after that, 23XI Racing announced that it was tapping Herbst to drive its No. 35 Monster Energy Toyota in the 2025 NASCAR Cup Series. The 25-year-old fills us in on how it all came about, and what’s next.... You’re now a full-time Cup racer. Just how does that feel? “It’s awesome. It’s been a lifelong dream, for sure, to have a full-time ride in the Cup series. We worked really hard at it. It’s exciting and I can’t wait to get to Daytona.” When Stewart-Haas Racing announced its impending closure, you were, in essence, left in no-man’s land. Was that a tough time for you? “A little bit. It was just because I didn’t know what was going to happen. I know I had good people around me, but just the outcome was kind of uncertain. So that’s where the nervousness came from. Like, we heard the rumors about SHR back in March, and so we worked with everybody to try and find a good landing spot for next year and I think we found the best spot possible. It’s been a heck of a process and I’m just so grateful for the opportunity that I have in front of me.” What did you think of the 23XI Racing team before you became a part of it? “Well, just watching with Kurt Busch and Tyler Reddick and everybody, I could see just really fast race cars, and a really fast team. Hundreds of videos under the hashtag “The Great Shift” or “The Great Indian Shift” are popping up on TikTok professing their newfound appreciation for Indian women, often emphasising their physical attractiveness. Interestingly, this trend didn’t start with us. “The Great Shift” first emerged within the Black community, where Black women were being celebrated for their beauty and desirability. Now, it seems that Indian women are the second group to be swept into this wave of newfound admiration. While it might seem like a positive shift, it raises some serious questions about why this recognition is happening now and what it signifies. Isn’t being perceived as hot a good thing? I mean yes, it is great to be recognised as the hotties that we are. I remember the sense of relief I felt when , played by . Seeing her celebrated in fan edits as gorgeous was a moment of joy for many of us. It was proof that we could be seen as beautiful in mainstream narratives. But why do we need proof to believe in our own beauty? This constant worry about how we are perceived by the white gaze is draining. I don’t think I know a single Indian woman in their 20s that hasn’t had a blonde moment, highlights or tried on coloured contacts to try and fit in. To try to become attractive to a group of people that have consistently reminded us that we are not beautiful, that we are not enough. This trend comes at an interesting time in the world — especially as we step back into ’s America. The political climate has shifted dramatically, with rising anti-immigrant sentiments and renewed discussions around race and identity. Just this year a trend was going around deeming Indians the “least dateable” race. So sure this trend feels nice now, but we can’t afford to be swept away by it. We must guard ourselves because unfortunately, the white man can clearly rip away our flowers as quickly as they gave them to us. The echoes of past political movements remind us that recognition can be fleeting and conditional. Not to mention the fetishisation of it all. This trend follows a troubling pattern where different racial groups become . Previously, Black women were at the centre of such trends; now it’s our turn... who’s next? As TikToker pointed out regarding current attitudes toward race: “Racism runs deep... but to then be fetishised and also treated like a commodity” speaks volumes about how quickly admiration can turn into objectification. If an entire race can be turned into a trend, they do not see us as humans, they see us as something to play with — a shiny new toy they can easily toss aside when they’re moving onto the next race. As TikToker put it, “I reject this . We simply cannot be made into a trend one more time. I saw a non-Indian guy on here say, ‘boys, we need to invest now.’ Getting treated like an object is one thing. Getting treated like cryptocurrency... the fetishising epidemic has hit the Indian community.” Personally, the concept of having someone buy a brown woman does not sit well with me at all. We are the fastest-growing ethnic group in the world, rich with culture and history. Yet here we are, still seeking approval from those who have historically marginalised us. A tainted shift Ultimately, this recognition feels tainted because it underscores our ongoing struggle for validation from those who have historically overlooked us. We shouldn’t have to rely on Western accolades or social media trends to validate our worth or beauty. I want to celebrate our wins without feeling like they’re only wins because someone else deems them worthy. It’s exhausting to navigate this constant pressure to conform to Western beauty standards while simultaneously trying to embrace our own identities. So here’s my plea: let’s reject this form of validation together. ; it doesn’t require from anyone — especially not from those who have historically marginalised us. We need to recognize that we are beautiful in our own right without needing someone else to tell us so. As Muskan said, “If you missed out on appreciating beautiful brown women, that’s on you.” If you’re still not with me, fine. But when this trend ends, which it will seeing that trends are quite literally something of the time, use this moment as a jumping off point to acknowledge your beauty. We deserve more than being part of someone else’s fleeting fascination; we deserve to be seen and appreciated for who we truly are — beautiful, complex individuals with stories that go far beyond any trend. This is the conclusion of a report by the Congressional Committee on Ethics made public on December 23, which also accuses Gaetz of violating “House Rules, state and federal laws, and other standards of conduct prohibiting prostitution, statutory rape, illicit drug use, acceptance of impermissible gifts, the provision of special favors and privileges, and obstruction of Congress [in its investigations].” Gaetz, one of Washington’s most controversial politicians, denies the allegations. He resigned from his post shortly before being appointed by Trump, hoping the report would not be made public because, he argued, the committee has no jurisdiction over former members. On Monday morning, Gaetz tried unsuccessfully to stop the report from being released. He later tweeted on X : “Giving funds to someone you are dating — that they didn’t ask for — and that isn’t “charged” for sex is now prostitution?!? That website, the committee writes, is dedicated to connecting mostly older men and young women looking for “mutually beneficial relationships.” “The website was generally understood by many of the women interviewed by the Committee to involve, at minimum, an exchange of companionship for money,” the report says. Legacy waste means municipal solid waste piled up for years in landfills, dumpsites or on barren land. These comprise biodegradable waste, plastic, clothes, metals, glass etc. With over 60,000 metric tonnes of untreated waste and daily additions compounding the issue, TTD is currently adopting a multi-pronged strategy aimed at sustainable waste management. "Our focus is not just on clearing the legacy waste but also on building a system that ensures efficient and eco-friendly waste management in the future. We are committed to transforming waste into resources and minimising its environmental impact", TTD executive officer Syamala Rao told Deccan Chronicle. According to the EO, approximately 2.45 lakh metric tonnes of legacy waste has accumulated over the years. While 1.85 lakh metric tonnes has already been treated and disposed of, the remaining 60,000 metric tonnes present significant logistical and environmental hurdles. Additionally, the treatment process has yielded by-products, including 34,000 metric tonnes of treated soil, 15,000 metric tonnes of refuse-derived fuel (RDF), and 10,000 metric tonnes of stones, all requiring repurposing strategies. Daily waste generation further intensifies the issue, with 60-70 metric tonnes of dry and wet waste being produced. This calls for immediate and long-term measures, explained the EO. To overcome these, TTD is implementing a blend of technology and expertise. "We are engaging consultants to devise a comprehensive plan for efficient waste management. Within a week, tenders will be called to appoint experts to provide innovative solutions," the EO announced. The TTD has begun incorporating insights from a study conducted three months ago by the Indian Institute for Human Settlements (IIHS). Also, a consultant from the GVMC will assess Tirumala’s drainage and storm-water systems to suggest improvements, Rao said. A dedicated drainage division is in the works to address infrastructure challenges. "We are exploring advanced equipment and recycling systems to reduce dependency on freshwater resources. Separating underground drainage from storm-water systems is a priority to ensure efficient waste treatment," the EO explained. The TTD is also focusing on repurposing by-products from waste treatment to ensure sustainable utilisation. Treated soil is earmarked for landfilling, pending compliance with safety standards, while stones and RDF are being evaluated for innovative repurposing methods.
