Jerusalem, Dec 27 (AP) Israel's attorney general has ordered police to open an investigation into Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's wife on suspicion of harassing political opponents and a witness in the Israeli leader's corruption trial. After a backlash, Lorenz later posted , “no, that doesn’t mean people should murder them.” The Network Contagion Research Institute at Rutgers University identified thousands of similar posts on X within hours of the killing. The posts, which could have been viewed by more than 8.3 million accounts, garnered 180,000 likes and 24,400 retweets, according to the institute . “The surge of social media posts praising and glorifying the killing of UnitedHealth CEO Brian Thompson is deeply concerning,” said Alex Goldenberg, a senior adviser for the institute and a fellow at Rutgers. “We’ve identified highly engaged posts circulating the names of other healthcare CEOs and others celebrating the shooter," he said. Some of the top sitewide posts on Reddit after the shooting were celebratory, ranging from memes that congratulated the shooter to top replies in subreddits like “r/nursing” that created a mock coverage review and claim denial for Thompson’s care. “This fatal shooting has been reviewed by a peer and is considered a non-covered experimental procedure,” read a reply with over 2,400 upvotes. Thompson was the father of two teenagers. Law enforcement officials told NBC News they found the words “deny,” “defend” and “depose,” written on the shell casings found at the shooting scene. Those words seem to echo the title of a 2010 book, “Delay Deny Defend,” whose subtitle is, “Why insurance companies don’t pay claims and what you can do about it.” The author declined to comment. Lorenz, who was a technology reporter for The New York Times from 2019 to 2022 and a columnist for the Washington Post from 2022 to earlier this year, also posted the photo of another insurance company CEO with a birthdate and a blank date of death. In an interview, he said he was not condoning the killing, but calling attention to populist anger about the private health insurance system. “Saw mainstream news coverage about the killing of the CEO of United Healthcare on TikTok and I think political and industry leaders might want to read the comments and think hard about them,” he wrote in a post that got 137,000 likes. “Compassion withheld until documentation can be produced that determines the bullet holes were not a preexisting condition,” one user responded. “My take is that there is a great deal of populist anger about the way corporations in private health insurance are able to just abuse people and ruin people’s lives and in the case of health insurance even potentially leave them to die with impunity and for profit,” Chow said. “Obviously I don’t think the solution to that is vigilante assassinations, but I think business and political leaders need to take seriously where this sentiment is coming from.” He said the killing produced an outpouring of complaints about UnitedHealthcare specifically. While the gunman’s motive is not yet known, health care industry professionals have experienced escalating threats , said Drew Neckar, a principal consultant at Cosecure, a security and risk management company. “The health care sector specifically has seen a pretty significant increase in violence, whether that be physical violence, threats, et cetera. It’s been a problem for decades, but it has significantly increased since the pandemic,” he said. The Prairie Gold Lacrosse League (PGLL) is still months away from beginning the 2025 season, but the Prince Albert Predators are already beginning to put in some work to prepare. The Predators will be hosting winter camps once a week at St. Francis School from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. for 12 weeks beginning on Jan. 5, 2025. The camps are open to all U17 and U21 players. Predators head coach Lucas Wells says the camp provides an opportunity for the team to get used to the sport of lacrosse and adjust to the systems that the team will implement during the season. “I think it’s vital for our organization, not just for the new kids, but the older guys that are in school or working. Just getting their sticks in their hands, getting their feet back moving. We can implement some things instead of having to do it at training camp or the first couple practices. We can work on things throughout the winter (and) be prepared. When the first game starts, we know we’re ready to go and we’re loaded with all of our systems and all the new guys are ready to go.” It was a historic season in 2024 for the Predators. Youngblood made the explosive claims against the popular motivational speaker on an Oct. 27 episode of the “Larry Reid Live” podcast, alleging Jakes tried to groom him and also hugged and “tried to kiss” him. The younger pastor and his attorney Tyrone Blackburn, who represented Lil Rod in his lawsuit against Diddy — then demanded $6 million from Jakes “in order to resolve this matter quickly and privately” in a Nov. 15 legal filing. Youngblood said if Jakes didn’t cough up the cash, he’d sue him for sexual assault and harassment. Jakes instead opted to file a defamation suit against Youngblood in Pennsylvania federal court. In their filing, Jakes’ attorneys seemed to hint that the stress of the lawsuit might have contributed to his medical emergency on Sunday. “This lawsuit is intended to bring that scheme to a halt,” Jakes team wrote, “to end the extreme emotional, physical, and spiritual toll Defendants’ conduct has caused Bishop Jakes, to set the record straight so the world understands the patent falsity of the accusations, and to restore Bishop Jakes’s reputation.” “Bishop Jakes believes with all his heart that actual victims of sexual abuse should be treated with the utmost respect, kindness, empathy, and sympathy — and that true perpetrators of such abuse should be held accountable for their actions,” the filing continues. “But that is not the case here. FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — Drake Maye’s arrival in New England coincided with a wholesale reset for the Patriots franchise following the departure of coach Bill Belichick and quarterback Mac Jones this past offseason. In his eight starts since assuming the reins from veteran Jacoby Brissett, the rookie quarterback has provided encouraging examples of what the Patriots’ revamped front office saw in selecting him third overall in the draft last April. While the Patriots enter their bye week with a 3-10 record and just 2-6 with Maye as the starter, both the coaching staff and his teammates feel they have a quarterback they can build around going forward. “I’m just trying to take it one day at a time, one game at a time,” Maye said this week. “I’m trying to learn from negative experiences or negative plays, learn from turnovers, learn from sacks that I take and see if I can get the ball out and do something better. That’s probably the biggest thing. "Hopefully, the work that we’re putting in and the product that we’re putting out can lead to some positive plays and some positive wins down the road.” Maye is coming off his best statistical performance of the season, completing a season best 80% of his passes (24 of 30) for a season-high 238 yards and a touchdown in New England’s 25-24 loss to Indianapolis. He also had a 41-yard run, showing off a running ability that has him averaging 9.1 yards per carry – best among quarterbacks who have played at least nine games. Maye did have one interception off a tipped ball, but showed his best command of offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt’s scheme to date, spreading the ball around to six different players and consistently getting the Patriots into the red zone. We need a guy like Cole Strange before the end of the season to see what he can do,” Mayo said. “You can use Caedan in that same bucket. We need to see what the receivers can do and what they’re going to look like going forward, and that’s the hard part for me. You want to win right now, but at the same time, I think it would be a disservice to go to the end of the season and not know exactly what we have.” That’s not lost on Robinson, who wants to play better for his quarterback who he said has grown exponentially as a leader since earning the starting job. “He always has that confidence about him and you know how he takes control of the huddle,” Robinson said. “He gets in there, and he’s like, ‘All right, let’s go to work,’ basically. Could the Atlanta Braves be unexpected power players in this free-agency cycle? Coming off their first non-first-place finish in the National League East since 2017, the Braves will be out for blood next season. But because they have a litany of superstars returning from injury (Ronald Acuña Jr., Spencer Strider, Austin Riley, etc.), not many seem to believe that Atlanta will make marquee additions. However, the rest of the NL has taken a big step forward, and the Braves should feel motivated to keep up in the arms race. The Los Angeles Dodgers are defending World Series champions, and the San Diego Padres, New York Mets, and Philadelphia Phillies all have fantastic rosters. What should Atlanta do, then, to boost their odds at making it back to the World Series? How about adding another big bat to the lineup to pair with Acuña in the corner outfield? In fact, the Braves could kill two birds with one stone by robbing the Dodgers of one of their most reliable bats. Dayn Perry of CBS Sports recently s uggested that Atlanta could pursue All-Star outfielder Teoscar Hernández this winter to add to the meat of their order. "(Hernández is) a reliable power source who inked a one-year free-agent contract last season, which means, at another year older, he might be a bargain once again," Perry said. "Then again, he's coming off one of the best seasons of his career with the Dodgers in 2024. Atlanta could use his thump in the outfield." Hernández, 31, will be looking to hit it big in free agency after his 33-homer Silver Slugger campaign. Ryan Finkelstein of Just Baseball predicted that the slugger would land a four-year, $85 million contract, which would certainly be a big chunk of Atlanta's free-agent budget.
