Learn More Getting enterprise data into large language models (LLMs) is a critical task for enabling the success of enterprise AI deployments. That’s where retrieval augmented generation (RAG) fits in, which is an area where many vendors have offered various solutions. Today at AWS re:invent 2024 the company announced a series of new services and updates designed to help make it easier for enterprises to get both structured and unstructured data into RAG pipelines. Making structured data accessible for RAG requires more than just looking up a single row in a table. It involves translating natural language queries into complex SQL queries to filter, join tables and aggregate data. The challenges are further compounded for unstructured data, where by definition there is no structure for the data. To help solve those challenges AWS announced new services for structured data retrieval support, ETL (extract, transform and load) for unstructured data, data automation and knowledge base support. “Retrieval augmented generation (RAG) is a very popular technique for customizing your data, but one of the challenges with retrieval augmented generation is it’s historically been mostly for text data,” Swami Sivasubramanian, VP of AI and Data at AWS, told VentureBeat. ” And if you see enterprises, most of the data, especially operational, is sitting in data lakes and data warehouses, and that has never been ready for RAG, per se.” Improving structured data retrieval support with Amazon Bedrock Knowledge Bases Why isn’t structured data ready for RAG? Sivasubramanian provided a few scenarios. “To build a highly accurate, secure system, you’ve got to actually understand the schema, build a custom schema embedding, and then actually understand the historical query log, and then keep up with the changes and schemas,” Sivasubramanian said. During his keynote at re:invent Sivasubramanian explained that the Amazon Bedrock Knowledge Bases service is a fully managed RAG capability that enables enterprises to customize responses with contextual and relevant data. “It automates the complete RAG workflow, removing the need for you to write custom code to integrate your data sources and manage queries,” he said. With structured data retrieval support in Amazon Bedrock Knowledge Bases, Sivasubramanian said that AWS is providing a fully managed RAG solution. It enables enterprises to natively query all their structured data to generate results for generative AI applications. Knowledge Bases will automatically generate and execute the SQL queries to retrieve enterprise data and then enrich the model’s responses. “The cool thing is, it also adjusts to your schema and data, and it learns from your query patterns and provides the customization options for enhanced accuracy,” he said. “Now with the ability to easily access structured data for your RAG, you will generate more powerful and intelligent gen AI applications in the enterprise.” GraphRAG: Bringing it all together in a knowledge graph Another key enterprise AI challenge that AWS is looking to solve for RAG is helping to improve accuracy, with more data sources. That’s the challenge that the new GraphRAG capability aims to solve. “One of the big challenges in enterprises is to piece apart distinct pieces of data and show how they are connected so that you can build explainable RAG systems,” Sivasubramanian said. “This is where knowledge graphs are super important.” Sivasubramanian explained that knowledge graphs create relationships across multiple data sources by connecting different pieces of information. “When these relationships are converted into graph embeddings for your gen AI applications, the system can easily traverse this graph and retrieve these connections to gather a holistic view of your customer data,” he said. The new GraphRAG capabilities in Amazon Bedrock Knowledge Bases automatically generate graphs using the Amazon Neptune graph database service. Sivasubramanian noted that itlinks the relationship between various data sources, creating more comprehensive Gen AI applications without the need for any graph expertise. Tackling the challenges of unstructured data with Amazon Bedrock Data Automation Another critical enterprise data challenge is the issue of unstructured data. It’s an issue that many vendors are trying to solve, including startups like Anomalo . When data, be it a pdf, audio or video file needs to be indexed for RAG use cases, having some kind of understanding of what’s in the data is crucial to making the data useful. “Unfortunately, unstructured data is difficult to extract and it needs to be processed and transformed to make it ready,” Sivasubramanian said. The new Amazon Bedrock Data Automation technology is AWS’ answer to that challenge. Sivasubramanian explained that the feature will automatically transform unstructured multi model content into structured data to power gen AI applications, “I like to think of this as a gen AI powered ETL [Extract,Transform and Load] for unstructured data,” he said. Amazon Bedrock Data Automation will automatically extract, transform and process an enterprise’s multimodal content at scale. He noted that with a single API, an enterprise can generate custom outputs, aligned to data schemas and parse multimodal content for genAI applications. “With these updates, we are empowering you to harness all of your data to build contextually more relevant gen AI applications,” he said. An error occured.Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy, the leaders of President-elect Donald Trump's new "Department of Government Efficiency," have found themselves at odds with some of Trump's far-right supporters over their support for H-1B visas, which allow foreign skilled professionals to work in America. The debate was sparked over the Christmas holiday when Laura Loomer , a conservative social media figure who faced criticism when she traveled with Trump on some campaign stops, criticized Trump's appointment of Silicon Valley entrepreneur Sriram Krishnan as his senior policy adviser for artificial intelligence. Criticizing a post from Krishnan where he advocated the removal of country caps for green cards, Loomer called the appointment "deeply disturbing," prompting an online battle between the business leaders who say the work visas are essential to employing high-qualified foreign workers and Trump supporters who argued it was a way for business leaders to have cheap labor rather than provide job opportunities for Americans. Both Ramaswamy and Musk made numerous posts on X claiming H-1B visas are essential because American culture doesn't prioritize success in science and engineering careers compared to other countries. "Our American culture has venerated mediocrity over excellence for way too long (at least since the 90s and likely longer). That doesn't start in college, it starts YOUNG," Ramaswamy posted on X. "A culture that celebrates the prom queen over the math olympiad champ, or the jock over the valedictorian, will not produce the best engineers," he added. MORE: As Trump returns to the border, a closer look at what he's pledging to do on immigration if elected Musk, who has said he once worked in the United States on an H-1B visa, said he has depended on these work visas for the operation of his tech companies and that they are essential due to the number of skilled workers needed to handle the rise of new technologies. "OF COURSE my companies and I would prefer to hire Americans and we DO, as that is MUCH easier than going through the incredibly painful and slow work visa process," he posted. "HOWEVER, there is a dire shortage of extremely talented and motivated engineers in America." Loomer and other far-right conservatives have also argued that the expansions of such programs would go against Trump's immigration crackdown. While she and others have accused Musk and Ramaswamy of hindering Trump's aggressive immigration proposals, the business leaders have argued that any such reforms would not hinder the program's extensive vetting process. "Maybe this is a helpful clarification: I am referring to bringing in via legal immigration the top ~0.1% of engineering talent as being essential for America to keep winning," Musk wrote on X. "This is like bringing in the Jokic's or Wemby's of the world to help your whole team (which is mostly Americans!) win the NBA," he said, referencing two foreign-born basketball stars. Now, the business leaders are being accused of using Trump for their own personal gain. "We are substituting a third world migrant invasion for a third world tech invasion. Same shit," Loomer posted on X. "Except this invasion won't be done by rapist foreigners who look and smell like garbage. It will be done by career leftist tech billionaires who hate Trump deep down inside." MORE: How Democrats are planning to fight Trump's mass deportation plan Further showing a divide among conservatives over the issue, former Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley also weighed in, pushing back on a post from Ramaswamy and arguing American workers should be prioritized over foreigners . "There is nothing wrong with American workers or American culture," she said. "All you have to do is look at the border and see how many want what we have. We should be investing and prioritizing in Americans, not foreign workers." In an interview with the New York Post on Saturday , Trump called H-1B work visas a "great" program that he has used for employment on his properties. "I’ve always liked the visas," he said. "I have always been in favor of the visas. That’s why we have them. I have many H-1B visas on my properties. I’ve been a believer in H-1B. I have used it many times. It’s a great program." In June, David Sacks, who will be the president-elect's AI and crypto czar, interviewed Trump for his "All In" podcast and asked Trump if he would expand H-1B work visas for tech workers after fixing the border -- to which Trump said "yes." In that same episode, Trump also promised to award all international graduates with green cards, saying, "I want to do, and what I will do, is you graduate from a college, I think you should get, automatically as part of your diploma, a green card to be able to stay in this country. That includes junior colleges, too." His campaign later walked back that promise, saying there would be a vetting process. "He believes, only after such vetting has taken place, we ought to keep the most skilled graduates who can make significant contributions to America," Karoline Leavitt, incoming White House press secretary, said in a statement to ABC News at the time. "This would only apply to the most thoroughly vetted college graduates who would never undercut American wages or workers." ABC News' Zohreen Shah contributed to this report.

Andrew Imperiale represents Mutcherson, Ron Thompson represents Pimentel, Jeffrey Hark represents Brown and public defender Alex Varghese represents Thomas. Willis was being represented by a public defender but has since retained attorney Richard Robinson. Detention hearings for Mutcherson, Brown, Willis and Thomas will be held once the cases get transferred to Atlantic County. Pimentel had her detention hearing Nov. 7 and was released from jail with conditions that she must check in with the courts weekly and have no contact with her co-defendants. The new judge will also have to determine whether Cape May County First Assistant Prosecutor Saverio Carroccia can remain on the case. In the motion, the attorneys say Carroccia worked at the Cumberland County Prosecutor's Office at the same time as Mosley. New Jersey has codified two new crimes that will come with harsher penalties for individuals breaking into homes, Attorney General Matthew Platkin said Thursday. Carroccia was a senior trial attorney in the office’s homicide unit from 2012 to 2017, his biography shows. His office is handling the case since Mosley worked in Cumberland County. Carroccia didn't object to the change of venue but opposed the motion to remove him from the case. Police responded to a home in the 600 block of Buckshutem Road in Bridgeton at 10:30 p.m. Oct. 15 for a report of multiple people kicking in the front door, police said. Officers found Mosley, 51, suffering from gunshot wounds. She was pronounced dead at the scene. On the night of the incident, staff at Inspira Health Center Bridgeton reported to police that an individual, later identified as Mutcherson, had arrived at the facility suffering from a gunshot wound. He falsely told detectives he was wounded in Millville, according to the affidavit of probable cause. The investigation found Brown and Willis picked up Mutcherson prior to the killing, and the three drove to a building on South Avenue to change into dark clothing before heading to Mosley’s home in a black 2012 Chevrolet Equinox registered to Pimentel. The three then entered the home and shot Mosley, who defended herself by shooting Mutcherson in the chest before dying from her injuries, court documents show. Mutcherson was driven to the hospital following the shooting, while Brown and Willis went back to South Avenue and changed into different clothes. Carroccia said during Pimentel’s detention hearing that Mosley was shot in her right knee and left wrist before being shot in the back of the head. In the days that followed, Brown, Willis and Pimentel worked to discard, destroy and conceal evidence of the home invasion and Mosley’s murder, the affidavit states. A change-of-venue motion in the cases of five people charged in the murder of Cumberland County Prosecutor's Office Detective Sgt. Monica Mosley is scheduled to be heard next week. Pieces from inside the vehicle along with gloves and a bloody boot were found at a property on Middlesex Avenue in Gloucester City. Pimentel then allegedly drove the vehicle with Willis from her home in Paulsboro to a garage in Philadelphia in an attempt to prevent law enforcement from finding it, Carroccia said. Detectives used cellphone data, license plate readers, surveillance video, DNA analysis, ballistics analysis and recorded statements during the investigation.
