Architect of the Auburn soccer program and the dean of the university’s coaches, coach Karen Hoppa announced her retirement on Tuesday. Hoppa led the program for 26 seasons. Her final season was one of her best, with the Tigers putting together a stellar run through non-conference play and contending for top national rankings for much of the season before bowing out of the NCAA Tournament last week in the round of 32. Hoppa has been the head coach of Auburn soccer for most of the program’s history. Her first season with Auburn was in 1999. The program’s first season was in 1993. She led Auburn to 18 NCAA Tournament appearances, which are all the appearances the program’s ever made. Also a pioneer through the emergence of women’s soccer at major colleges in the 1980s as a player and the 1990s as a coach, Hoppa retires as Auburn’s most accomplished female coach for team sports. Counting team sports and individual sports, only the resume of current women’s golf coach Melissa Luellen would rival hers. “It is with a mix of emotions that I’m announcing my retirement from college soccer today,” Hoppa said. “While I will miss all the excitement of college athletics, I am looking forward to spending more time with my family and moving into a new phase of life. It has been the greatest professional honor to be the head coach at Auburn University.” Hoppa goes out with 13 seniors including star midfielder Anna Haddock and five-year starter in goal Maddie Prohaska. She played at UCF, her senior season being in 1990, then she coached at UCF from 1993 through the 1998 season before taking the Auburn job. She finishes her career with a 293-192-60 record at Auburn and with a 357-236-69 overall between UCF and Auburn. “I want to thank all of my coaches, all of the support staff and especially all of my players throughout the years,” Hoppa said. “I also want to thank John Cohen, Rich McGlynn, Courtney Gage and Daniel Watkins for providing such tremendous leadership for our soccer program. I look forward to the next head coach building on the foundation we have established for this program.” Hoppa has been a steady presence on the Plains for over two decades. She became the athletics department’s longest-tenured coach in 2022 when former track coach Ralph Spry stepped down. “Karen Hoppa’s incredible success over three-plus decades, including 26 at Auburn, is a testament to the type of coach and leader she is,” said Auburn athletics director John Cohen. “Auburn soccer would not be where it is without Karen’s unwavering work ethic and determination. She not only achieved success on the field, but her program was also a model for success in the classroom and community. On behalf of the entire Auburn Family, we want to wish Karen and her family all the best in her retirement.” Hoppa coached 15 All-Americans at Auburn and 77 All-SEC selections. In 2016, Auburn made its deepest-ever run in the NCAA Tournament, finishing in the Elite Eight. The Tigers also made the Sweet 16 in 2015. Hoppa coached Auburn to the round of 32 nine times. ISLAMABAD — Supporters seeking the release of broke through a ring of shipping containers blocking off the capital on Tuesday, and battled security forces despite a government threat to respond with gunfire. Six people have died in the violence. Thousands of security forces have poured into central Islamabad in an attempt to quell protests in support of Khan that have gripped the capital and its surrounding areas since Sunday. The popular politician has been in jail for over a year and faces more than 150 criminal cases that his party says are politically motivated. Authorities say only courts can order the release of Khan, who was ousted in 2022 through a no-confidence vote in Parliament. He has been imprisoned since his first conviction in a graft case in August 2023. On Tuesday, Pakistan’s army took control of D-Chowk, a large square in downtown Islamabad’s Red Zone, which houses key government buildings and where . Paramilitary rangers and police were also out in force and some fired warning shots into the air. Still, Khan’s wife, Bushra Bibi, who is leading the protests, made slow progress toward the square in a heavily guarded convoy, surrounded by well-wishers. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi threatened that security forces would respond with live fire if protesters fired weapons at them. “We have now allowed police to take any decision according to the situation,” Naqvi said later while visiting the square. Protester Shahzor Ali said people were on the streets because Khan had called for them to be there. “We will stay here until Khan is among us. He will decide what to do next,” Ali said.”If they again fire bullets, the bullet will be responded with the bullet,” he said. Protester Fareeda Bibi, who is not related to Khan’s wife, said people have suffered greatly for the last two years. “We have really suffered for the last two years, whether it is economically, politically or socially. Zlatan Elek of Srpska Lista, or Serb List, said the move was “done on the orders of Albin in order to gain some easy political points,” adding they would appeal the decision. Elek was referring to Kosovo’s prime minister, Albin Kurti. The Central Election Commission declined to certify Srpska Lista, justifying the move by pointing to its nationalist stance and close ties to Serbia. The Srspka Lista party has nine out of the 10 lawmakers the ethnic Serb minority currently has in the 120-seat parliament. Kosovo holds a parliamentary election on Feb. 9 , which is expected to be a key test for Kurti, whose governing party won in a landslide in 2021. European Union-facilitated negotiations to normalize ties with neighboring Serbia are a top priority for any Cabinet in power after the polls. Western powers also expressed concern about the move, fearing it may further aggravate the already tense ties between Kosovo and Serbia. Kosovo was a Serbian province until a war broke out between Serbian government forces and ethnic Albanian separatists in Kosovo, which left about 11,400 dead, mainly ethnic Albanians. NATO’s 78-day bombing campaign in 1999 ended the war and pushed Serbian forces out. Kosovo proclaimed independence in 2008, which Serbia doesn’t recognize. Belgrade still considers Kosovo as its province and has a major influence on the ethnic Serb minority living there. Serb President Aleksandar Vučić criticized the move to ban the party, saying “Kurti is trying to root out the Serb people from (our) southern province.” Kurti considers the Srpska Lista as the “political branch of Milan Radoicic and of Serb state terrorism.” Radoicic, a politician and wealthy businessman with ties to Serbia’s ruling populist party and Vučić, was among 45 people charged in Kosovo in connection with a gunfight last year in which a Kosovar police officer was killed following an incursion by heavily armed Serb gunmen. He is free and under investigation in Serbia, which refuses to extradite him to Kosovo. The prime minister accused the Serb party of being behind all the incidents in the four northern municipalities, where most of the ethnic Serb minority lives. “Srpska Lista unfortunately represents Serbia's widest and the highest level of intervention into Kosovo’s internal affairs and in our democratic elections,” he said at a news conference. Kurti accused Belgrade of being behind two terrorist groups on their “planning, financing and offering logistics” to commit terror attacks in Kosovo. KUCHING (Nov 24): The journey of ageing could present numerous challenges albeit it can also be a time of remarkable growth and discovery. This was highlighted by Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii at the closing of ‘Golden Years Mental Wellness Fair’, conducted by the Bodhi Counselling here yesterday. “As we navigate the later chapters of our lives, it is crucial to recognise that mental health is just as significant as physical health. “In Malaysia, particularly in Sarawak, we are witnessing an increasing awareness of mental health issues, but there is still a long way to go,” he said. Quoting a recent study by the National Health and Morbidity Survey, he said approximately 29 per cent of Malaysians aged 60 and above experience some form of mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety. Moreover, he cited data from the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DoSM) about the country being projected to record six million, or 14.5 per cent of the total population, people aged 65 and above, by 2040. He also said the composition of individuals aged 65 and above in the country had increased from 7.2 per cent in 2022, to 7.4 per cent last year. “This 7.4 per cent is translated into approximately 2.5 million people, underscoring Malaysia’s experience of an ageing population,” said the Democratic Action Party (DAP) lawmaker. Dr Yii observed that many older adults in Sarawak still face stigma around mental health, limiting their willingness to seek help. “We must work together to shift this narrative and create an environment where seeking help is seen as strength. “The elderly folks may experience mental health challenges due to many factors including the ‘empty nest syndrome’, where their children leave home to work and they feel quiet and lonely. “Many are also experiencing financial or even health problems that create additional stress to them. “Thus, there is a strong need to address some of these core issues, and more importantly, build a more caring community here in Kuching where each and every one of us can help someone,” he said. According to him, research shows that maintaining strong social connections can significantly alleviate feelings of loneliness and anxiety. “Creating relationships is a powerful tool in maintaining not just our mental health but our joy and fulfilment as we age. “Let’s also remember that it’s okay to seek help and support when we need it. There is no shame in reaching out to a friend, a family member, or a mental health professional.” On the ‘Golden Years Mental Wellness Fair’, Dr Yii expressed gladness over the support and cooperation being rendered by the event partners. They include the Mental Health Association Sarawak, Sentosa Hospital, Grace Centre, St Joseph’s Counselling, Befrienders Kuching, Sarawak Women For Women Society, and Pusat Perkhidmatan Warga Emas. “This gathering is not just an event; it is a celebration of resilience, community and the importance of mental wellness in our golden years,” he pointed out.
