Gabby Baratta came to Nebraska to pursue a law degree and to swim for the Huskers. After accomplishing both feats, she's onto another task — leading one of the most successful swimming and diving teams in Lincoln. Baratta's first year as Lincoln East's coach got underway officially last week when the Spartans swept Lincoln Southwest. The boys defeated the Silver Hawks 120-53 and the girls took down 98-76. Baratta said there's plenty of reason to be excitement about the team this season. "It's going great. They're a great group of kids," Baratta said. "They are really hard workers, super open to having a new coach, and it's been great getting to know them and their personalities in and out of the pool." Perhaps a head coaching job was only a matter of time for Baratta, who has embedded herself within the city's swimming scene since moving to Lincoln from New Jersey eight years ago. Baratta, 25, has coached for seven years at Club Husker, a swimming organization that attracts many top athletes. People are also reading... The East boys finished second in Class A at state last season and have one of the sport's stars in Jadeon Carter, who enters his senior season with the expectation of adding to his collection of two gold medals. The Spartan girls finished third in the team race in Class A in part due to Avari Wischhof, who finished second to Natalya Woods in the 50 and 100 freestyles last season. Wischhof, now a senior, will be one of the favorites at state this season as Woods, one of the state's best swimmers ever, is now competing collegiately at LSU. "I think that's one of the more exciting things about coming into a program like that is knowing that they already are expecting hard work," Baratta said. "They are all hard workers because you don't have that success without that." Gabby Baratta swam at Nebraska for four seasons. She's now the head coach at Lincoln East. Baratta said Carter is "looking great" early this season and said his leadership qualities stood out right away. Carter is the defending champion in the boys 200 and 500 freestyles. "He's an awesome leader," Baratta said. "Works really hard. He's super coachable. He's just an all-around, really great kid." Baratta takes over for Uriah Reiners and Emma McEntarffer, who served as East's co-head coaches. Baratta Nate Head is the sports editor of the Journal Star. On Twitter @NateHead_LJS. This release was published on openPR.DAMASCUS, Syria — Israel carried out a wave of heavy airstrikes across Syria as its troops advanced deeper into the country, a Syrian opposition war monitor said Tuesday, and the Israeli defense minister announced that his forces had destroyed Syria’s navy. Israel acknowledged pushing into a buffer zone inside Syria following the overthrow of President Bashar Assad. But it remained unclear if its soldiers had gone beyond that area, which was established more than 50 years ago. Israel denied that it was advancing on the Syrian capital of Damascus. The Israeli military said Tuesday that it carried out more than 350 strikes in Syria over the last 48 hours, hitting “most of the strategic weapons stockpiles” in the country to stop them from falling into the hands of extremists. The targets included air defense systems, military airfields, missile depots and dozens of weapons production sites in Damascus and other cities. Associated Press reporters in the capital heard heavy airstrikes overnight and into Tuesday morning. Israeli missile ships also simultaneously struck two Syrian navy facilities, where the military said 15 Syrian naval vessels were docked. Israel did not specify how many Syrian naval vessels it struck, but the private security firm Ambrey said it had seen evidence that at least six Soviet-era Syrian navy missile ships had been hit. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said Israel intended to establish a demilitarized zone in southern Syria. Speaking at a navy base in Haifa, Katz said the army will create “defense zone free of weapons and terrorist threats in southern Syria, without a permanent Israeli presence, in order to prevent terrorism in Syria from taking root.” He gave few details on what that entailed, but warned Syria’s rebels that “whoever follows Assad’s path will end up like Assad. We will not allow an extremist Islamic terrorist entity to act against Israel.” In an area where so many geopolitical lines are packed closely together, any military movement can spark regional fears. It is barely 25 miles (60 kilometers) from Damascus to the buffer zone, and only a few more miles to Israeli territory. There was no immediate comment from the insurgent groups — led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, or HTS – that have taken control of much of the country. Their lightning advance brought an end to the Assad family’s half-century rule after nearly 14 years of civil war, leaving many questions about what comes next . Members of the ousted Syrian government will gradually transfer power to a new transitional cabinet headed by Mohammed al-Bashir, who reportedly headed the rebel alliance's “salvation government” in its southwest Syrian stronghold. Outgoing officials met for the first time Tuesday with al-Bashir, who told reporters that the transitional period would last until the beginning of March. ‘Damascus is more beautiful now’ Life in the capital is slowly returning to normal after the overthrow of Assad, who fled the country over the weekend and has been granted political asylum in Russia . Private banks reopened on instructions from the central bank, said Sadi Ahmad, who runs a branch in the upscale Abu Rummaneh neighborhood. He said all his employees returned to work. Shops also reopened in the city's ancient Hamidiyeh market, where armed men and civilians could be seen buying perfume and ice cream. A clothing shop owner, who asked not to be named for fear of retribution, said he hoped vendors would no longer have to pay bribes to security officials. At Bakdash, a famous ice cream shop, a poster outside read: “Welcome to the rebels of free Syria. Long live free Syria.” “Damascus is more beautiful now," said Maysoun Qurabi, who was shopping in the market. “It has a soul, and people feel at ease and secure.” Under Assad, she said, “people were hungry and scared. The regime was strong." Syrians across the city celebrated the fall of Assad, and hoped for an end to the relentless bribery demands that governed much of life. “We are happy to get rid of the corrupt regime," said Abdul-Jalil Diab, who was strolling through a square in western Damascus with his brothers. Diab said he was living in Jordan until the city fell, studying German in hopes of moving to Germany. Now he is reconsidering those plans. “The whole country feels better,” he said. Israeli incursion draws condemnation In the immediate aftermath of Assad's fall, Israeli forces moved into a roughly 400-square-kilometer (155-square-mile) buffer zone inside Syria that was established after the 1973 Mideast war, a move it said was taken to prevent attacks on its citizens. Israel has a long history of seizing territory during wars with its neighbors and occupying it indefinitely , citing security concerns. Israel captured the Golan Heights from Syria in the 1967 Mideast war and annexed it in a move not recognized internationally, except by the United States. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which has closely tracked the conflict since the civil war erupted in 2011, said Israel has carried out more than 300 airstrikes across the country since the rebels overthrew Assad. The Observatory, and Beirut-based Mayadeen TV, which has reporters in Syria, said Israeli troops are advancing up the Syrian side of the border with Lebanon and had come within 25 kilometers (15 miles) of Damascus, which the Israeli military denied. Israel denies advancing toward Damascus Lt. Col. Nadav Shoshani, an Israeli military spokesperson, said “reports circulating in the media about the alleged advancement of Israeli tanks towards Damascus are false.” He said Israeli troops are stationed within the buffer zone in order to protect Israel. Israel's military had previously said troops would enter the buffer zone “and several other places necessary for its defense.” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu later confirmed the airstrikes, saying they aimed to destroy the toppled government’s leftover “military capabilities,” and said Israel wants relations with the new government in Syria. He spoke in a video statement recorded after his first day of testimony in his corruption trial . Egypt, Jordan and Saudi Arabia have condemned Israel’s incursion, accusing it of exploiting the disarray in Syria and violating international law. Turkey, which has been a main backer of the Syrian opposition to Assad, also condemned Israel’s advance. The Turkish Foreign Ministry accused Israel of“displaying a mentality of an occupier” at a time when the possibility of peace and stability had emerged in Syria. U.N. spokesman Stephane Dujarric on Monday said Israel's incursion constitutes a violation of the 1974 disengagement agreement and called on both Israel and Syria to uphold it.

ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — The chief executive of the North West Co. Inc. is rejecting accusations that its stores in remote Indigenous communities hiked food prices as funding flowed in this year from federal programs aimed at making necessities more affordable. Dan McConnell made the comments Tuesday during a call for shareholders discussing the company's third-quarter financial results, in which it reported consolidated sales of $637.5 million. “Absolutely not,” he said when asked if the company's stores in Northern Canada were raising prices when federal funding arrived in the region. “We're actually looking at lowering prices by bringing in other options and lower cost items under a private label program.” The North West Co. operates 118 Northern grocery stores in remote communities across Northern Canada, as well as a host of other businesses, including Quickstop convenience stores in Northern Canada and Alaska and a dozen Cost-U-Less stores in regions including St. Maarten, the Hawaiian Islands and the Caribbean. In some northern Labrador and Nunavut communities, the Northern store is the only place to buy groceries Last month, Nunavut Tunngavik Inc., the land-claims body representing Nunavut Inuit, said it is planning to investigate whether retailers, including Northern stores, hiked food prices after communities began receiving money this year under the federal Jordan’s Principle and Inuit Child First Initiative programs. The programs provide funding to ensure children get adequate food and education. The consolidated sales figure reported for North West Co.’s third quarter, which ended Oct. 31, marks a 3.3-per cent increase over the same quarter last year, but McConnell said that didn't translate to the bottom line, as the company's net earnings were $36.4 million, down from $38 million in the third quarter of 2023. The company also faced a seven per cent increase in selling, operating and administrative costs compared with the same quarter last year, partly driven by higher minimum wages and new hiring, McConnell said. Sales in the company's Canadian operations were up by four per cent, thanks in part to increased demand in communities where people qualified for government funding and payouts from a 2021 settlement between Canada and certain First Nations over drinking water. "In Canada, we expect consumer demand in the fourth quarter and into 2025 to continue to be positively impacted by the distribution of First Nations drinking water settlement payments and government spending on First Nations Child and Family Service programs, including Jordan's Principle and the Inuit Child First programs," McConnell told shareholders during the call. Nicholas Li, an economics professor at Toronto Metropolitan University who studies food security in Northern Canada, said there is some evidence that retail food prices go up when government funding is around. But it can be hard to know why this happens. Li was part of a team that published a report last year about the Nutrition North Canada program, which offers federal subsidies aimed at lowering and levelling food prices across remote Indigenous communities. The study found retailers passed on to customers just 67 cents of every subsidy dollar they received. McConnell said Tuesday that qualifying North West Co. stores pass on 100 per cent of the subsidies they received, noting that its use of the program has passed several federal audits. But Li said the federal government runs the Nutrition North audits like a "black box," refusing to release any information on how the companies are scrutinized. He said the North West Co. has tended to be more profitable than other Canadian grocery giants such as Loblaws, Metro and Empire, which owns Sobeys. The company’s stock also soared to historic heights this year, hitting nearly $56 last month. "I think it's easy to voice frustrations with the North West Company," Li said. There are likely many things happening to increase prices that retailers shouldn't be blamed for, he said. "But at the same time, based on my research, there's also truth to these views that retailers do take advantage of some of these programs to profit," he said. "Both things can be true." "It can also be true that the current retail setup (in the North), while maybe not ideal, is the best thing that's possible under the current circumstances," he added. CHICAGO, Nov. 21, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- A plaintiff representing nationwide consumers has filed a class-action complaint against Set Forth Inc., an administrative services provider and processor of debt relief programs. The complaint alleges the company failed to properly notify consumers after cybercriminals breached Set Forth's databases and purloined credit reports, loan applications, bank statements, and other highly sensitive information from more than 1.5 million consumers. According to the complaint filed in the U.S. District Court in Chicago, Set Forth and its business partner, Centrex, learned of the massive breach as early as May 21, 2024, but for unexplained reasons, opted to withhold the information from consumers for more than five months. "We are speaking with consumers who are absolutely livid with Forth's decision to keep news of the breach from them," said Elizabeth Fegan, managing partner of FeganScott and one of the attorneys representing the plaintiffs. "Considering it takes just a few seconds and a few keystrokes for a cybercriminal to empty a bank account once armed with account numbers and social security numbers, we are eager to learn why Forth opted to sit mute after learning of the breach." The complaint also alleges that once Forth decided to alert consumers, the company intentionally downplayed the severity of the breach, failing to provide details, including whether the breach was part of a ransom attack or whether consumers' data was available for sale on the dark web. According to Fegan, companies are responsible for safeguarding consumer data, but failing in that, those companies have a moral imperative to warn. "Forth had an iron-clad obligation to raise its hand, admit the breach, and give its customers a chance to get ahead of the bad actors, and they failed," Fegan added. Set Forth operates its principal place of business in Schaumburg, Illinois. FeganScott is joined by Cotchett Pitre & McCarthy LLP, Clapp & Lauinger LLP, and Wynne Law Firm to represent affected consumers. Consumers who are Forth or Centrex customers or those who received notice that their data was compromised are urged to contact FeganScott to learn more about their rights. About FeganScott FeganScott is a national class action law firm dedicated to helping victims of consumer fraud, sexual abuse, and discrimination. The Real Housewives Of Atlanta alum and the ex-NFL player both filed for divorce last year, plunging into a rancorous legal battle amid their mounting money woes. Their home in Alpharetta, Georgia is in foreclosure and will be auctioned off December 3, after they failed to sell the property despite dramatically slashing the price . Moving trucks were spotted outside the house this week, and a source has now confirmed that Kim, 46, has vacated the premises, via Page Six . It is currently unknown whether Kroy, 39, has also moved out of the property already or is planning to do so in the remaining days before the auction. The former linebacker has reportedly taken a corporate job in the construction business as he attempts to improve his financial situation. Kim Zolciak-Biermann has moved out of the seven-bedroom mansion she lived in with her estranged husband Kroy Biermann , it is claimed He has allegedly obtained a position as a Crane and Rigging Coordinator at Superior Rigging & Erecting Co., where he has been working for months, sources told TMZ . The company has worked on such projects as the Mercedes-Benz Stadium and the State Farm Arena in Atlanta, as well as the Hard Rock Hotel in Hollywood, Florida . Kroy's responsibilities are reportedly centered on logistics, with tasks like 'enhancing workflow efficiency' and 'reducing operational bottlenecks.' News of his new position comes after movers were seen outside his and Kim's mansion, less than a week before the scheduled foreclosure action. In a video obtained by TMZ , an Atlanta Peach Movers truck was parked in the driveway of battling Biermanns' seven-bedroom, 11-bathroom house while an even larger Penske truck was parked outside the gate. That same day, Kroy and Kim's daughter Ariana Lenee Biermann announced she was 'home for the holidays.' The New York City-based 23-year-old - whose birth father was Kim's ex-husband Daniel Toce - Instastoried a rare snap of her twin siblings Kane Ren Biermann and Kaia Rose Biermann on their 11th birthday as well as 13-year-old brother Kroy Jagger Biermann Jr. Ariana marveled as they pet a hairy cow: 'I can't get over how grown my siblings are!' On November 18, the on/off divorcing couple slashed the price of their single-family residence another $300K on Zillow , bringing it down to $3.65M, ahead of the foreclosure auction looming on December 3. It's a good thing Kim and Kroy will soon live apart as the Milton Police Department have been called several times to break up their fights, as recent as November 18 while she moved some of her belongings out of the house. Originally built in 2013, the Milton manor - sitting on 1.78 acres and measuring 15,694 square feet - was valued at $5.5M by residential appraiser Alan Daniel and it was first put on the real estate market by Jenny Doyle for $6M in 2023. The Biermanns' brick-and-stone estate features a heated pool/spa, in-ground trampoline, gourmet chef's kitchen, entertaining space, 500-bottle climate controlled walk-in wine cellar, billiard room, arcade game room, home theater, two-story walk-in closet, two-station salon, gym with private massage room, and six-car garage. 'He's fine. He's hoarded all of his money and I've spent all mine taking care of my family,' Zolciak blasted. The debt-ridden exes filed for divorce from each other in May 2023 after 12 years of marriage. But Kim and Kroy's marital problems appeared to have stemmed after the cancellation of their Bravo reality TV spin-off, Don't Be Tardy, in 2020 following eight seasons . The Biermanns - whose November 5-6 divorce trial was postponed - originally met in 2010 during a Dancing Stars Of Atlanta event raising money for Alzheimer's disease. Special use permit for new men’s shelter denied On Dec. 13, the Washington Board of Adjustments denied the request for a special use permit to locate a new men’s shelter and kitchen adjacent to Kingdom Distributors at the intersection of E. 4th and McNair Streets. The request was denied for two reasons: The proposed use will not adversely affect the health and safety of residents and workers in the city. Noodles and wine are the secret ingredients for a strange new twist in China's doping saga Blame it on the noodles. That's what one Chinese official suggested when anti-doping leaders were looking for answers for the doping scandal that cast a shadow over this year's Olympic swim meet. Earlier this year, reports that 23 Chinese swimmers had tested positive for a banned heart medication emerged. None were sanctioned because Chinese authorities determined the swimmers were contaminated by traces of the drug spread about a hotel kitchen. In a strange twist, the leader of China's anti-doping agency suggested this case could have been similar to one in which criminals were responsible for tainting noodles that were later eaten by another Chinese athlete who also tested positive for the drug. Bad Axe: Wisconsin wary of rival Minnesota with bowl bid in perilHow many SEC teams are actually in playoff contention? Just three teams in the league have two or fewer losses after a . Does that mean the SEC is down to just three playoff possibilities? Or does a three-loss team have a shot? We wouldn’t write off the three-loss teams. Especially Texas A&M. The Aggies can get an automatic berth with a win over Texas and a win over Georgia in the SEC title game. And both Alabama and Ole Miss have wins over Georgia. However, we think there will be just three SEC teams in the bracket in Tuesday’s set of College Football Playoff rankings. Here’s how we think the bracket will look after getting . The Ducks were off in Week 13 and are the only undefeated team remaining at the top level of college football. Texas got a win over a Kentucky team that couldn’t make the most of any opportunities it had. Quinn Ewers suffered an ankle injury in the win and the Longhorns hope it’s minor heading into that big matchup with the Aggies. Miami did what it needed to against Wake Forest. A win in Week 14 puts the Hurricanes in the ACC title game against SMU. Ashton Jeanty eclipsed the 2,000-yard mark but also suffered what appeared to be a left ankle injury. Jeanty was able to return to the game, however, and Boise State survived Wyoming’s upset bid for a 17-13 win. The Sun Devils are in the best position of any team tied atop the Big 12. Arizona State has the tiebreaker advantage over everyone else and is in the Big 12 title game with a win over Arizona. The Sun Devils should also be the highest-ranked Big 12 team in the rankings on Tuesday night. Ohio State will stay at No. 2 in the rankings after , but it is stuck with the No. 5 seed at the moment. The Buckeyes will get a rematch with the Ducks for the Big Ten title with a win over Michigan. The Hoosiers are the main beneficiary of the chaos in the SEC. Had Alabama and Ole Miss gotten wins, it’d be easy to see the committee dropping Indiana from the field this week. Instead, the Hoosiers have to feel really good about their chances. A win over Purdue should be enough for a playoff berth. We think Notre Dame could jump ahead of Penn State in the rankings after . The Irish are a very complete team at the moment and have a nine-game win streak after their stunning Week 2 loss to Northern Illinois. SMU should find itself in the field for the first time after an easy win over Virginia that clinched a spot in the ACC title game. SMU is also on a nine-game win streak since its Week 2 loss to BYU. Here’s a situation to ponder: Does SMU get in as an at-large team at 11-2 if it loses to Miami in the ACC title game? The Nittany Lions got out of Minnesota with a 26-25 win. Like Indiana, Penn State will feel great about its playoff chances with a win over Maryland in the regular-season finale. Don’t start thinking about a rematch between the Vols and Bulldogs just yet. This is probably going to change. Georgia has clinched a spot in the SEC title game and will play either Texas or Texas A&M on Dec. 7. There are still a range of seeds for the Bulldogs. Tennessee was the biggest playoff beneficiary of the losses in the SEC. After falling outside the bracket a week ago, the Vols are back in and should make the playoff with a win over Vanderbilt.
