It's fast becoming the most hated rebrand in history. When luxury car maker Jaguar launched a 30-second “teaser” advertisement featuring strutting models in brightly coloured outfits, it set social media ablaze – for all the wrong reasons. Also notably absent was the company’s iconic and much-loved pouncing cat logo, which is being retired in favour of a “modern” design. But at what cost? In recent years there has been a super-charging of brands jumping on the social responsibility bandwagon, and creating polarising adverts that alienate loyal customers as they aggressively market messages of diversity and empowerment. It’s given rise to the popular refrain of “Go Woke, Go Broke” – a powerful consumer backlash where fed-up customers boycott a brand, plummeting its stock value, to send a clear message of their dissatisfaction. Nike is among the high-profile victims of this modern phenomenon. In 2018, people posted images of themselves burning their Nike shoes and clothing after the sportswear giant featured NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick in an ad. He had previously kneeled at a game to protest racial injustice. Sales plummeted by more than 3%. In May, Apple apologised for its advert “Crush”, a supposed celebration of how much creativity could be packed into its thinnest iPad. The clip showed books, musical instruments, easels and many other items being destroyed by a huge hydraulic press. After it was widely derided as “tone-deaf”, Apple CEO Tim Cook said: “We missed the mark with this video, and we’re sorry.” Disney has similarly hit the headlines for its increasingly loud left-leaning agenda on and off screen in terms of diversity and inclusion. A prominent backer of trans rights, the entertainment conglomerate’s first non-binary character, Raine Whispers, was unveiled in 2023, a year after company heir Charlee Cora announced they were transgender. But the entertainment giant also became embroiled in a protracted row about the running of its Florida theme park, sparked by the protest of a state law prohibiting the teaching of sexuality orientation and gender identity in schools. Disney suffered four box office bombs last year, culminating in $628million of lost revenue. This followed prior losses of $300million in 2022 for two “woke” films – Strange World and the Toy Story spin-off Lightyear – both featuring prominent LGBTQ+ storylines and disadvantaged characters. And this seems to be the sticking point – brands which hijack socio-political causes and realign their values to appease younger, liberally minded audiences risk losing their core demographic. Within two weeks, Bud Light’s year-on-year sales had plummeted by 17%, falling by 27% by September. And as of this summer, Bud Light was no longer the US’s top-selling beer, having slumped to third place. However, not everyone is convinced that “Go Woke, Go Broke” is an own goal for sales. One recent study reported companies employing inclusive advertising enjoy an uplift in figures of 16% over the long term. Sanchez still remembers every detail from that moment – especially how it made him feel. “I’ll never forget getting helped up and walking myself to the sideline,” Sanchez said. “I felt that something was wrong but I was confused because I was able to walk.” It was quickly diagnosed as the notorious ACL tear, and Sanchez had surgery a little over a month later. Now, things are coming full circle in his senior season. Sanchez played his first career playoff game last Friday in Stillwater’s 49-14 win over Putnam City North. Now, he’s getting another shot at Muskogee – this time with a spot in the state championship game on the line. Stillwater High center Enrique Sanchez (52) is playing in his first postseason after suffering a torn ACL just before the playoffs last year. Stillwater will look to advance to the state championship with a win over Muskogee on Friday. “I’m really excited,” Sanchez said. “More than scared or nervous or not really revenge. Just excited, to be honest. Missing out on the playoff experience last year makes me more motivated.” The excitement undoubtedly comes from the months and months of rehab that it took for Sanchez to be ready to play again. The typical recovery time from ACL surgery is six to nine months. During that time, Sanchez leaned on one of the many valuable lessons that he’s been taught from his dad, Enrique Sanchez Sr. “Just keep pushing forward, one play at a time,” Sanchez Sr said to his son. “That’s life.” So, Sanchez treated each day as its own play, not looking past it until each one was completed. “Focus on your workout right now, focus on what’s ahead of you, right ahead of you,” Sanchez said. “Then the next day, focus on your next workout, or focus on trying to do something better, trying to get stronger.” Sanchez Sr. has used that same philosophy for most of his life. As a young child, he came from Chihuahua (about 160 miles southwest from the Texas border) to Stillwater in 1980 when his dad, also Enrique Sanchez, attended Oklahoma State University for a Ph.D. in Animal Science. He remembers living in married student housing at just 6 years old before then going back to Mexico. Turns out the Sanchez family was destined to be in Stillwater again. Sanchez Sr. found his way back to Oklahoma State in 2006 after being presented with the opportunity to earn his own degree. A year later, he was offered an opportunity to get a masters’ degree in International Studies. At this same time, his wife, Belinda, was pregnant with Enrique. The Sanchez family has been in Stillwater ever since, and Sanchez Sr is now the assistant director of operations for OSU Housing and Residential Life and Belinda is the assignments coordinator there. Sanchez gave the final push to get Mason Schubert across the goal line. The fans stormed the field, and Sanchez Sr. had a proud dad moment. Somebody next to him said, “Did you see that push from No. 52?” “That’s my son,” Sanchez Sr. replied. “This kid is someone special, not just to me, but the people around him,” Sanchez Sr. said. “He has a special angel behind him that influences people around him.” And Sanchez is proud of the influences of his family. Both his father and grandfather played football themselves in Mexico, and that was passed down to Sanchez when he was eight years old. “Football is so engraved on my heart,” Sanchez Sr said. “My son playing in football games will end, but we will share that love forever.” The mutual respect between father and son has created a truly special bond between Enrique Sr and Jr. “The most important thing in my life is having that relationship with someone that I love and someone that loves me, that’s something that you can’t buy or get anywhere else,” Sanchez said. Chloe Robinson said reported strikes represent a fraction of their true extent, and a lack of protection measures leaves whales vulnerable as global shipping expands. The study found shipping takes place across 92 per cent of the ranges for humpback, blue, fin and sperm whales worldwide, but measures to reduce vessel strikes have been implemented in less than seven per cent of high-risk areas. “That could really spell, you know, potential extinction for some of these species,” said Robinson,director of whales for Ocean Wise, a B.C.-based organization that provided data for the paper published in the peer-reviewed journal Science. “A recent study estimated anything up to 20,000 whales are killed a year through ship strikes, globally, and that’s just an estimate, a best-case estimate.” Robinson said she was surprised to see Swiftsure Bank, off the west coast of Vancouver Island, emerge as a risk hot spot for strikes of fin, blue and humpback whales. The area is a “migration highway” for humpbacks, she noted. The study also identified a hot spot for the same three species in the Gulf of St. Lawrence between Quebec, New Brunswick and Newfoundland. “This is something that Ocean Wise has been looking into because a lot of the management measures occur offshore and not sort of within the Gulf of St. Lawrence itself and even the St. Lawrence Seaway, (which) leads down to the Great Lakes,” she said. “That was a huge hot spot, which was really interesting for me.” Robinson said there have been smaller studies on the risk of ship strikes in different regions, but the study published Thursday is the first to map the distribution of the four whale species, using a variety of data sources, then compare it with the Automatic Identification System, a tool used for tracking vessels worldwide. “This was really the first of its kind to map these two on top of each other,” she said. The researchers found the highest levels of risk in the Indian, western North Pacific and Mediterranean, while it also identified high-risk areas in the eastern North Pacific, North and South Atlantic Ocean along with the South China Sea. The Southern Ocean was the only region that did not contain any ship-strike hot spots due to low levels of shipping, despite high use by whales, the study found. Robinson said the findings support a strong case for maritime authorities to adopt measures such as whale alert systems, speed limits and no-go zones. “We know where there are areas where there are lots of whales and lots of ships, so this is where we need to target for management,” she said in an interview. Robinson said Canada is home to many “eyes on the water” and researchers exploring innovative techniques for monitoring whales. But the country lacks mandatory mitigation measures, and it’s not alone. “Next to none of the measures globally are mandatory. So, having voluntary measures (is) great, provided people comply,” Robinson said. Ocean Wise launched an alert system in 2018 that notifies large vessels of the presence of whales in Pacific Northwest waters, and Robinson said about 80 per cent of mariners from Washington state up to Alaska have signed up. The WhaleReport alert system mainly functions in what she describes as “inshore” waters around busy ports in Seattle, Vancouver and Prince Rupert. The Port of Vancouver has also seen a high rate of compliance for its ECHO program, Robinson noted. The program encourages vessels to take voluntary steps, such as slowing down or staying farther away from whales, in order to reduce underwater noise and the potential for strikes in busy shipping areas. Robinson favours a multi-pronged approach to reducing ship strikes, but she said one single measure she believes could have a big impact would be equipping vessels with an infrared camera to detect whales within several kilometres. “Maybe some mariners ... respond better to knowing there 100 per cent is a whale 200 metres in front of your vessel, versus, ‘slow down, there might be a whale here.’” Robinson said such cameras can cost betweenUS$50,000 and $75,000. But the cost was a “drop in the bucket” of major companies’ profits, she said. The cameras also present a public-relations opportunity for businesses to advertise themselves as operating in a more whale-friendly manner, Robinson said. “I know people who have had to go and have therapy after killing a humpback whilst at the helm,” she added. “I think there’s a lot to be said (for) the long-term benefits of this kind of technology.” The study also found areas with lower traffic that could provide refuge for whales, especially with added protections. It shows the Arctic Ocean, for example, has very few high-risk areas for vessel strikes, and Robinson said some researchers view it as potential sanctuary. But without protections, Robinson said Arctic waters could become the next high-risk hot spot as sea ice melts with climate change, opening up shipping routes. “Knowing the plans to expand shipping routes into these areas to cut shipping time, make things faster, right through prime whale habitat, I think this is a really good opportunity to get ahead of the issue before it becomes an issue,” she said. Whales play crucial roles in their ecosystems, including cycling nutrients that support other species, and they’re a boon for tourism, Robinson said. They’re also “magical” creatures that people feel connected to, she said, and they remain vulnerable after many species were hunted to the brink of extinction. Our reactions are encoded into our nervous system, said Dr. Beth Frates, a part-time associate professor in the department of physical medicine and rehabilitation at Harvard Medical School in Boston. "By understanding these brain responses, people can develop strategies to manage stress better, such as setting realistic expectations, focusing on mindfulness and simplifying holiday preparations," said Frates, who also is the immediate past president of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine. The idea of exchanging gifts at this time of year can be traced back to pagan solstice celebrations. But the drive to share with another is as old as humanity itself, said Dr. Diego Guevara Beltran, a postdoctoral fellow in psychology at the University of Arizona in Tucson who studies cooperation and generosity. The science of generosity is more about survival than stocking stuffers, Guevara Beltran said. Sharing food gave early humans an evolutionary advantage. "Generosity is just one of the ways by which we can accumulate resources, be it wealth itself or friendships or work partners or more attractive, more intelligent mates," he said. Sharing with other people, Guevara Beltran said, is "a signal that communicates how much you value them, their welfare, your relationship with them." Research has shown that helping people makes us feel good. Part of that, he said, is because when someone is part of a community, they feel protected. One way this manifests is through the act of giving gifts. But to derive happiness from gift-giving, the giver needs to feel both that it was not an obligation and that it was effective, according to the 2019 World Happiness Report . That means it could be stressful to be in a culture where gift-giving feels mandatory, or if we can't see that a gift helped someone, Guevara Beltran speculated. It also might be stressful if gift-giving becomes a competition to show that you care about somebody more than the others around them. Our brains on shopping Stressful shopping can cause several physiological responses to kick in, Frates said. First is the "fight or flight" reaction that comes with stress. The release of chemicals that increase our heart rate, raise our blood pressure and intensify our breathing evolved to give us bursts of energy to escape danger. Frates said that while holiday stressors are not life-threatening, they can still trigger the stress response. The pressure to stay within budget could create a sense of scarcity, she said. "This taps into an evolutionary response, where the fear of losing resources like money can feel urgent and distressing." The holiday season also involves a lot of choices. "The brain has limited capacity for decision-making, and making multiple decisions can lead to decision fatigue," Frates said. "This fatigue reduces the ability to self-regulate and cope, which can lead to heightened stress responses when confronted with even minor setbacks, like a long line or out-of-stock item." The stress of needing to complete tasks within a limited time can intensify the fight-or-flight response, she said, as the brain interprets the ticking clock as a sense of urgency or threat. Meanwhile, Frates said, holiday shopping can also trigger brain chemicals that affect our feelings. "Dopamine, a neurotransmitter associated with pleasure and reward, is released when we anticipate something exciting or enjoyable, like finding a great gift or finding a good deal," she said. "This anticipation can feel rewarding even before any actual purchase is made." For some people, this dopamine boost can make shopping a relaxing experience. "It provides a temporary distraction from other stressors and allows them to focus on something positive, creating a 'holiday high,'" Frates said. For some people, that can be problematic. "When shopping becomes a way to chase that next dopamine hit, it can lead to excessive spending or impulsive purchases," she said. "This can become a trap, particularly during the holidays, when deals, sales and gift-giving pressures are everywhere." Understanding how all these processes work can help people recognize why they feel the way they do and adopt strategies to cope, Frates said. Here are some of her suggestions. 1. Start with self-care before shopping Prioritizing self-care means people can be their best selves and make good decisions, Frates said. So, "eat food that is delicious and nutritious. Get seven to nine hours of sleep. Make sure to enjoy physical activity. Take walks when you can and invite friends along. Practice stress reduction like meditation or yoga to help you calm your body and mind." Before going shopping, try taking deep breaths using stress-relieving techniques such as 4-7-8 breathing (inhale through your nose for four counts, hold for seven counts, and exhale through your mouth for eight) or box breathing (inhale through the nose for four counts, hold your breath for four, exhale for four, then hold for four). 2. Be strategic Don't shop when you're hungry, tired, lonely or stressed, Frates said. And don't start shopping 15 minutes before a store closes or a website's online deals end, she said. That's setting yourself up for triggering the fight-or-flight response. 3. Be mindful Before making a purchase, take a moment to consider whether it's truly needed or whether it's an impulsive choice. To avoid overindulging, set a specific budget or limit yourself to a couple of hours or specific shopping days. "This keeps dopamine-driven spending in check while still allowing for the enjoyable aspects of holiday shopping," Frates said. Look for post-shopping activities that provide rewards without the financial cost. That can satisfy your brain's desire for more dopamine in a healthier way. "Plan enjoyable, stress-relieving activities after shopping, like going for a walk, spending time with friends or indulging in a hobby," she said. 4. Bring a friend Not only does this support healthy social connections, Frates said, but if things start feeling stressful, "you have a buddy, and you have a support system right there for you." 5. Rethink the focus of the season "With gift-giving, we need to change mindsets in order to be able to manage the stress," Frates said. The holidays could be used to emphasize social connections, she said. "Thinking about the connection with the person and making gift-giving more about deepening the connection than anything else, I think, will really help to reduce the stress around the process," she said. So instead of scouring shops and websites for the "perfect" gift, think about making a meaningful and personal one, she suggested. It could be a poem, a painting, a song or a framed photograph that captured a special time. 6. Lessons for children It's easy to get caught up in the hunt for a hard-to-get item, Frates said. But ask yourself what the holiday means in your family's traditions. "Is it about getting that perfect gift for the child? Or is it about celebrating the meaning of that holiday?" So instead of having children ask for one specific toy, or a specific brand of clothing, teach them to leave a little leeway on their lists. "It is a good reminder to express to children that this season is about giving and sharing what we can in the best way that we can," she said, "and sometimes the exact gift is not available." Encouraging such an attitude can be a tall order, Frates said, but it's a place to start. "A simple mindset shift could be the difference between a stressful holiday shopping season or a joyful journey to find meaningful gifts for people you care about." Yet another stowaway managed to board a major airline’s plane – renewing serious questions and concerns about airport safety during the busiest travel season of the year. This time, a stowaway tried to hitch a ride on Delta Air Lines Flight 487 at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport on Christmas Eve. The unticketed passenger was discovered while the plane was still taxiing out for takeoff to Honolulu, Delta Air Lines told CNN. The Transportation Security Administration and the Port of Seattle confirmed the incident to CNN. The incident came less than a month after another stowaway boarded a Delta airplane Thanksgiving week. That unticketed passenger made it all the way from New York’s John F. Port of Seattle police officers were dispatched to gate B1 at the airport around 1:05 p.m. for “a report of a suspicious circumstance” on the Delta flight. The person “ran out” of the aircraft before officers arrived, Cooper told CNN Friday. “The aircraft returned to the terminal and the subject departed the aircraft,” the Port of Seattle said. “With the help of video surveillance, POSPD were able to locate the subject in a terminal restroom. The subject was arrested for criminal trespass.” The unticketed passenger didn’t have any prohibited items, the TSA told CNN. “The aircraft was swept by K9 as well as all areas in the terminal accessed by the subject,” the Port of Seattle said. “The aircraft was deplaned and all passengers were escorted by TSA to return to the security checkpoint for rescreening.” CNN has reached out to the Port of Seattle for additional comment. Delta said the flight was delayed by two hours and 15 minutes. After the rescreening, it continued to Honolulu at 3 p.m. “As there are no matters more important than safety and security, Delta people followed procedures to have an unticketed passenger removed from the flight and then apprehended,” the Atlanta-based airline said in a statement. “We apologize to our customers for the delay in their travels and thank them for their patience and cooperation.” TSA said it “takes any incidents that occur at any of our checkpoints nationwide seriously. There are a number of factors at play, according to former commercial airline pilot and aviation analyst, John Nance. “There are multiple causes that come into this, and they probably involve not only a bit of lackadaisical inattention,” Nance told CNN affiliate KING . “It may be training, it may be compliance, but it’s probably all of that.” It’s “embarrassing” for this situation to happen twice to the same airline and TSA, according to former Department of Homeland Security official Keith Jeffries, who was federal security director when he left the DHS in 2022. In his 20 years working with DHS and the TSA, Jeffries said he’s seen these situations multiple times. “It has happened before. It will happen again until they continue to strengthen that vulnerability,” Jeffries said. “The fact that it happened to the same airline, of course, couldn’t be more embarrassing, especially back-to-back, and during the holiday season, when there’s an extra alertness associated with the large holiday season,” Jeffries added. During the holidays, Jeffries explained, there’s typically more staffing at the airports being “extra vigilant.” TSA, airlines and airports have even more people present to ensure things like this don’t fall through the cracks, making these cases “even more concerning,” he said. If there is a “silver lining,” Jeffries said, it’s that Delta did catch the stowaway during the taxi, and they didn’t make it to Hawaii. The stowaway also didn’t have prohibited items when scanned through TSA, which is another plus, he said. “Everybody’s going to have to work together; TSA and the airlines on how they can strengthen both of those vulnerabilities, and in some cases, even work with the airport,” he said. ph spin login register David E. “Dave” Nething of Jamestown, ND died December 2, 2024, of natural causes at SMP Health - Ave Maria, Jamestown, ND at the age of 91. Twice each day for many years, Dave prayed to God he would be a better person and a better friend in Jesus than he was the day before. He knew when he reached the ultimate being the best person he could and the best friend of Jesus possible for him; God would take him from his earthly life. It is his life we will celebrate at United Presbyterian Church in Jamestown, ND on December 11, 2024 at 10:30 a.m. Arrangements are in the care of Eddy Funeral Home. Dave was born June 29, 1933 in Valley City, ND when his family lived in Wimbledon. The family moved to Pingree where he attended school leaving the last semester of high school to enter the military service. His diploma was granted in May of 1951. When he entered active federal duty he went to Camp Rucker, Alabama in 1951. He entered Jamestown College in 1952 and graduated in 1956. It was in college where he met and married Marjorie Moffatt of Rugby, ND in 1955. In the autobiography and memoirs book he wrote for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren in 2011, he dedicated it to Marge and said the following: “Throughout our life together, she has been my best friend and supporter. Starting with our first meeting, you need to realize whatever I accomplished, her presence and willingness to endure were ever present. Without her steady guidance, our lives would never have matured to the level we have enjoyed.” His college part-time jobs included part owner of a service station in Pingree with his brother Edwin, college bookstore, Jimmy Grill, construction truck driver, railroad section crew, radio announcer, school bus driver, college commons (kitchen help) and railroad yard clerk. His first job out of college was high school principal and teacher at Pingree High School. In addition, he coached boys & girls basketball and softball. The following year he started working in insurance and real estate business in Jamestown. He entered the University of North Dakota Law School and graduated in 1963 with a Juris Doctorate (JD) degree with Honors. During the summers of Law School he worked in Alaska for the State Department, and part time waiter in the Red Dog Saloon and radio announcer. He passed the North Dakota Bar Exam in 1963, then went to work in the office of the Attorney General in Bismarck. In 1964, he opened his law office in Jamestown. He was appointed Assistant State’s Attorney for Stutsman County through 1969 and did all prosecution of criminal cases. In 1965, he formed a partnership with Clint Ottmar which was continued to 1976. During this time he was a part-time Business Law instructor at Jamestown College and the Assistant City Attorney for Jamestown, ND. From 1976 thru 2000 he was a sole practitioner of law and was the City Attorney for Jamestown, for four years. He was very active in his community including serving on the Jamestown Stutsman County Business & Industrial Development Commission, Commissioner Chairman of ND Supreme Court Grievance Commission, Presbyterian Church Trustee and Deacon, President of Rotary, Director of Stutsman County Fair Board, Director of Camp Rokiwan Board, Delegate to ND Constitution Convention, member of American Legion and Masonic Bodies. He enjoyed politics and became very active in the Republican Party. He served as Secretary for the Stutsman County Republican Committee, State Chairman, ND Young Republicans and on various District and State Committees. In 1960, he was a Delegate to the National Republican Convention held in Chicago. In 1966, he was elected to the North Dakota Senate and served until his retirement in 2012. At that time he was the longest serving Republican State Senator in the United States. He thoroughly enjoyed serving in the legislature and served on 26 different committees during his 46 years. He was elected Senate Majority leader in 1974 thru 1986 and was elected President Pro-tem 1997-98. In 1985-86, he was elected President of the National Conference of State Legislatures, the only legislator from ND to hold that office Higher Education Policy was of special interest. He served on the Western Interstate Commission of Higher Education (WICHE) and was Chairman in 2005. He was also very interested in telecommunications. He was the prime sponsor of legislation to provide Telecommunication Regulatory reform in North Dakota. He was very active in the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. Locally he was Exalted Ruler and served on many committees. He was a trustee for the North Dakota Elks Association and served as Chairman of the Board. He received 28 different recognition awards during his time in legislature. In addition, he was inducted into Jamestown College Hall of Fame. Received the “Greater North Dakotan” Award from Greater North Dakota Association. Was presented the “Commodore in the ND Mythical Navy” Award for unwavering support of water issues from Governor Hoven and the North Dakota Water Users Association. In 2012 was the recipient of an Honorary Doctor of Letters degree from the University of North Dakota. Dave was an energetic, loving, caring and positive thinking man whose life centered on his state, community, family and his faith in God. He instilled these values in his children and taught them the importance of faith, love and family. His wife, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren all brought joy to him in many different ways and he was very proud of each of them and their spouses. In 2011 Dave became an author and over several years presented his family with 4 books “Grandpa Dave, Citizen Senator”, “Grandpa Dave: the Person and the Family” “Grandpa Dave and Grandma Marge - Lonesome Lovers - Alaska - Summer of 1961” and in 2024, ”Grandpa Dave: A Lifetime of Activities.” Dave enjoyed writing about family history especially for his grandchildren. He is survived by his best friend and supporter for 69 years, Marjorie, three children, Deborrah (Francis) Lee, Scot (Darlene) Nething, and Melissa, (Rick) Morris all of Jamestown, Granddchildren: Jeff (Jill) Lee and daughters: Arya & Kyra; Heidi (Nick) Bollinger and sons: Cashton & Jack; Andy Lee (Kalli Swenson); Robyn Nething; Ben (DeeAnn) Lee and children: Danica, Silas, Lila, June, Ruby and sister-in-law Bonnie and (Tom) Lavik of Blaine, MN. Wisdom, a Laysan albatross, was spotted with the egg and a new partner last week at Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge, an island sanctuary located on the far northern end of the Hawaiian archipelago. “She did it again!” the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (USFWS) for the Pacific Region exclaimed on social media platform X. Jon Plissner, supervisory wildlife biologist at Wildlife Refuge, said he and his team were “optimistic that the egg will hatch” and that Wisdom would be fit enough to raise another chick. “A special joy,” he called Wisdom’s achievement. A video posted on USFWS’ Facebook page showed Wisdom rubbing her head against her new partner before he sat down to incubate the egg. Biologists spotted Wisdom at Midway Atoll in 2001 with a red band around her leg that they later discovered was placed there by the late renowned ornithologist Chandler Robbins in 1956. USFWS estimates that the bird has produced up to 60 eggs and mothered as many as 30 chicks in her lifetime. For decades, she returned to the island with the same partner, Akeakamai, but he has not been seen since at least 2021. Experts tagged her new mate last week after spotting them together. Laysan albatrosses live between 12 and 40 years. Many die after mistakenly swallowing colorful plastic, which they think is food in the sea. Wisdom has intrigued biologists who are desperate to find out how she manages to live such a long life and still have babies. Each year, millions of albatrosses return to Midway Atoll to nest and raise their young, according to USFWS. The mating season is between October and November, and the species often spends a little more than half of the year at the refuge, incubating and raising their chick. During that time, they fly thousands of miles across the ocean for food to get back to their babies. With Laysan albatrosses flying up to 50,000 miles per year as an adult, Wisdom would have flown multiple round trips to the moon by her age, according to USFWS.

Richardson, a 55-year-old Canadian, went 57-118 with 15 overtime losses in three seasons with Chicago. The Blackhawks are 8-16 with two overtime losses this season for a league-low 18 points after going 19-54-9 last season, second-worst in the NHL, and 26-49-7 in 2022-23, third-worst in the league. "Today I made the difficult decision to move on from Luke as our head coach," Blackhawks general manager Kyle Davidson said. "As we have begun to take steps forward in our rebuilding process, we felt that the results did not match our expectations for a higher level of execution this season and ultimately came to the decision that a change was necessary." KALISPELL — Flathead High School announced Monday morning that it will begin the hiring process for a new head football coach in January, marking the fourth time the school will have sought to hire a new head coach since early 2019. In a press release, assistant principal and activities director Matt Allison wrote that the school thanked former head coach Caleb Aaland “for his dedication and leadership during his three years as the head coach of the Braves Football program, as the school has decided to go in a different direction.” Aaland, who is originally from Panama City, Fla., and spent several years on the coaching staff at Troy University in Alabama, before moving to work at Glacier National Park. He spent one year at Flathead High as the football team’s quarterbacks coach, before taking over as head coach in 2022. Aaland told the My Panhandle news outlet in 2022 that he took over a team that had not won a game since 2019. The team’s first game under Aaland was a 27-0 win against Billings Skyview, but Flathead went on to lose the rest of its games that season. The 2023 season brought a marginal improvement in the win-loss column with a 2-7 record. Tina Kotek dropped plans to designate rural land near Hillsboro for industrial development on Friday as Oregon’s odds of winning a federally backed semiconductor research hub before a looming statutory deadline all but vanished. The state has been pursuing the major research site since Congress authorized the CHIPS Act in 2022 and had been eyeing 373 acres south of U.S. 26 for the project. Political and business leaders hoped a National Semiconductor Technology Center could have cemented Oregon’s leadership role in technology research and brought nearly $1 billion in federal dollars to the state. They sought to expand the Portland area’s urban growth boundary to make room for the facility, using special gubernatorial authority that expires at the end of 2024. Friday’s decision is a tacit acknowledgement that Oregon’s chances of landing the site have faded and that time was running out to use Senate Bill 4, the state law that granted Kotek authority to designate rural land for the chip sector. It’s a major defeat for Oregon’s strategy to boost the state’s semiconductor industry, one of the region’s major economic engines. “With two of the three NSTC facilities already determined and the third not yet announced, Gov.
