Addressing a press conference in Gagret, Sharma said he has filed a criminal defamation case against Surendra Kumar who should be booked for offence under the Prevention of Corruption Act. On November 18, police filed a case of cheating and criminal conspiracy against Sharma based on a complaint lodged by Kumar accusing the BJP leader of cheating to the tune of Rs 8 lakh on the pretext of securing work in the Public Works Department (PWD). In his complaint, the builder alleged that Sharma’s aides, Mahesh Yadav and Harshit Tiwari, got him to deposit Rs 6 lakh in an account besides taking Rs 2 lakh in cash from him for securing a contract in the PWD. However, he did not get the contract nor was the money refunded, Kumar claimed. Responding to the charges, Sharma said, “I did not receive any money and no amount was deposited in any of my accounts. I don’t even know the person in whose account the money was supposedly deposited. According to McKinsey, over 60% of individuals surveyed in 2020 said they would be willing to pay more for a product that is packaged in an eco-friendly way. Since 2019, products marketed as being environmentally sustainable have seen a 28% growth in revenue compared to 20% for products with no such marketing, a 2023 McKinsey and NielsenIQ report found. Much of this is thanks to the preferences and attitudes of Gen Z, who, on average, care more than their older counterparts about being informed shoppers. The younger generation also has more social justice and environmental awareness altogether. Shoppers are willing to spend around 9.7% more on a product they know is sourced or manufactured sustainably, with 46% saying they would do so explicitly because they want to reduce their environmental footprint, according to a 2024 PwC report. Sustainable practices consumers look for from companies include production methods, packaging, and water conservation. But despite the growing consciousness around being more environmentally responsible, consumer actions don't always align with their values. In psychology, this is defined as the "say-do gap": the phenomenon wherein people openly express concern and intention around an issue, but fail to take tangible action to make a change. According to the Harvard Business Review in 2019, most consumers (65%) say they want to buy from brands that promote sustainability, but only 1 in 4 follow through. So why don't people actually shop sustainably, despite how much they express a preference for eco-friendly products—and how can we close the gap? The RealReal examined reports from the Harvard Business Review and other sources to explore why some shoppers want to buy sustainably but struggle to follow through. This lack of action isn't due to a lack of caring—in many cases, it's hard to know how to be a sustainable consumer and other factors are often outside of shoppers' control. But the more people shop sustainably, the easier and more accessible that market will be for everyone—making it much easier for folks to buy aligned with their values. There are many obstacles preventing shoppers from upholding eco-friendly habits as much as they may want to—but not all of these barriers are necessarily real, or accurately understood. Reasons for this can vary from lack of space to buildings being excluded altogether because of recycling contamination issues. The former is often true, which does create a hurdle for many: The manufacturing processes and materials for sustainable products are pricey. For instance, organic cotton requires an intensive production process free of certain chemicals or pesticides; by definition, true eco-friendly products can't be mass-produced, further upping their price tag. Using recycled materials for packaging, or obtaining an eco certification, can also be expensive. However, although the narrative of eco-friendly products being more expensive is true, there is often more of an effort to use better quality materials that last longer than their noneco-friendly counterparts. This could end up saving consumers money in the long run: By paying more upfront, they can get more wear out of sustainable fashion, for instance. There is also undeniable political rhetoric surrounding eco-friendly products—however, despite many Conservative politicians decrying sustainable products, members of all generations are increasingly choosing to prioritize shopping sustainably regardless of their political affiliation, according to research from NYU Stern Center for Sustainable Business . This finding shows a trend toward seeing sustainability as a nonpartisan subject everyone can benefit from, no matter where they lie on the political spectrum. Some might think eco-friendly clothing, in particular, is not fashion-forward; after all, many of the top clothing retailers in the world partake in fast fashion. However, brands are increasingly being recognized as 'cool' and 'trendy' for supporting environmentally ethical practices, particularly as younger generations prioritize sustainability, as noted before. Many increasingly popular online stores are taking advantage of this paradigm shift by offering secondhand shopping options that are not only fashionable, but also more affordable, like ThredUp or Poshmark. Additionally, many legacy large-name brands are hopping on the sustainability movement and are gaining appreciation from loyal customers. Amazon's Climate Pledge Friendly program partners with third-party certification bodies to make it easier for shoppers to identify eco-friendly products as they browse the website. H&M's newly launched H&M Rewear program debuts a resale platform that allows the resale of all clothing brands—not just their own. Similarly, Patagonia's Worn Wear program allows shoppers to trade in and buy used gear and clothing. The federal government is also working to close this gap. The Environmental Protection Agency's Safer Choice program is attempting to make sustainable shopping easier for consumers and companies alike. It includes a directory of certified products, a list of safer chemicals to look out for on labels, a "Safer Choice" label that products can earn to denote they are eco-friendly, and resources for manufacturers looking to adopt more sustainable practices. Most of all, though, the biggest way shoppers can shift toward sustainable shopping is through their behaviors and attitudes amongst their peers and communities. Studies show that humans largely care what others think of their actions; the more shoppers make environmentally conscious shopping the norm, the more others will follow suit. From an economic perspective, the more consumers shop eco-friendly, the more affordable and accessible these products will become, too: Sustainable products are currently more expensive because they are not in high demand. This year, some who have been the most vocal in questioning the integrity of elections have instead been celebrating Trump’s victory. “The results are being accepted in the manner that they are, in part, because those who have been eroding trust or casting doubt on the integrity of U.S. elections have a result they feel good about,” said David Levine, a former local election official in Idaho who now advises on election administration issues. “Hopefully we can get back to a place where Americans can feel confident in the results even if it’s one they disagree with.” On Tuesday, Nevada and New Mexico certified their statewide results with little discussion. During Monday’s certification in Arizona, Secretary of State Adrian Fontes reflected on the lack of controversy this year. “I think the age of election denialism, for all intents and purposes, is dead,” he said. Sitting next to Fontes, state Attorney General Kris Mayes, a fellow Democrat, said she was more skeptical. Her Republican opponent in 2022 spent two years challenging his loss . “Do I think election denialism is dead? No, I don’t,” she said. “We’ll see over the next couple of election cycles what happens, but I don’t think we’re there yet.” Public confidence in elections has dropped since Trump challenged his loss in 2020 and made false claims of widespread fraud, particularly among Republicans . Some Republicans began targeting the certification process, when local and state boards certify the results after local election officials provide them with the final tally of votes. A firestorm erupted in Georgia over the summer when the state election board, with a new pro-Trump majority, attempted to politicize the certification process with changes later blocked by the courts. While certification battles did not surface after the Nov. 5 election , a vocal segment within the Republican Party remains deeply skeptical of election processes, particularly of the availability of mail ballots and the use of ballot scanners to tally votes. During a forum Monday on the social platform X led by the group Cause of America, the group's director expressed doubt about voting equipment. Shawn Smith, who also is a retired Air Force colonel, argued the certification process suppresses legitimate concerns and goes against “the sovereignty of the people.” Although not as widespread as four years ago, this sentiment did surface sporadically at the local level this month. In Washoe County, Nevada, which includes Reno and voted narrowly for Vice President Kamala Harris, the vote to certify the results was 3-1 with one abstention. Commissioner Jeanne Herman has consistently voted against certification and did not make a public comment about her vote this year. Commissioner Mike Clark, a staunch Trump supporter who had also previously voted against certification, said he would abstain and left before the vote. “I am not an election denier and clearly the person I wanted to win, won this state,” Clark said before leaving the meeting. “However, that does not mean that all the protocols were followed and that we can truly certify the election.” Such skepticism, whether in Nevada or elsewhere, leaves the door open to certification disputes during future elections. The questioning of election results isn't limited to Republicans. Even though Harris quickly conceded after losing all seven presidential battleground states , online posts among her supporters continue to raise concerns about her loss. One Reddit community that has amassed 23,000 members features a steady drumbeat of Democrats scrutinizing a result they can’t believe is real. Some posting in the group have issued calls to contact Harris and her running mate to ask them to demand a recount or otherwise object to the outcome. Among the battlegrounds, Michigan was among those where Trump and his allies pressed to halt certification of the 2020 election for Democrat Joe Biden amid false claims of fraud and manipulation. Two Republican members of the Wayne County Board of Canvassers who initially opposed certification eventually relented. The state board of canvassers eventually voted to certify, even after one Republican member abstained. This year, the state board voted unanimously on Nov. 22 in favor of certifying and praised the state’s election workers. In Georgia, Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger certified his state’s results on Nov. 22. Four years ago, the Republican state official was facing immense pressure from Trump and his allies to investigate their unsubstantiated claims of fraud. Also certifying results Tuesday, and doing so unanimously, was the state Board of Elections in North Carolina. The sisters were all-state players at Manhattan Christian, helping the program reach five straight Class C championship matches and winning the title four times during that span. Now at Boise State, they’re among several current and former players claiming that their Title IX rights have been violated due the participation of a transgender athlete on the San Jose State University team. Boise State opted to forfeit its two regular season conference matches against SJSU, and three other conference schools followed suit with forfeitures. “It’s been a difficult season just because of this issue and there’s just been so many different conversations that we’ve had to have. It’s taken away a lot of just the volleyball part of the season,” Katelyn said. “I think that it has been a huge problem, but I think as a school and as just me personally, that we’re just standing up for different types of girls throughout the nation playing sports and different kids that want to play sports too.” The lawsuit the Van Kirks joined, which was filed in U.S. District Court in Colorado two weeks before the start of the Mountain West Women’s Volleyball Championship, asked for the SJSU player be declared ineligible for the tournament and for SJSU’s forfeit wins to be vacated. The emergency injunction was rejected by U.S. District Judge S. Kato Crews and upheld by the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. Had the judge granted the injunction, Boise State would have moved up to the No. 4 seed from No. 6 in the conference tournament. SJSU finished as the No. 2 seed and had a bye into the semifinals. “I wouldn’t say I was necessarily surprised (by the judge’s decision),” Kiersten said. “But it is disappointing to see just because all of us as athletes just worked so hard all season long and the tournament is what we were working towards all year long and winning the Mountain West championship. So to see that not being changed, and then our opportunities being taken away from us because of that, was really disappointing.” Why wasn’t the lawsuit filed earlier? “I think it definitely could have been something that was done earlier but also this is something that was so new to the teams in the Mountain West that at the beginning we were trying to figure out how to maneuver and manage what was going on,” Kiersten said. “Then towards the end of the season it was, no, we want to see something different, we want to see something changed. That’s when the Mountain West lawsuit began to be filed.” Boise State defeated Utah State in four sets in the quarterfinals on Nov. 27. Just hours following the victory, the team released a statement about choosing not to play SJSU in the semifinals: “The decision to not continue to play in the 2024 Mountain West Volleyball Championship tournament was not an easy one. Our team overcame forfeitures to earn a spot in the tournament field and fought for the win over Utah State in the first round on Wednesday. They should not have to forgo this opportunity while waiting for a more thoughtful and better system that serves all athletes.” Katelyn and Kiersten said there were many people involved in the decision not to play the semifinal match. But they declined to say whether the vote was unanimous. “Unfortunately, I am unable to answer that question because of the school and where we are at right now,” said Katelyn. The are 16 players listed on the team’s roster, including senior opposite Paige Bartsch, who led Helena Capital to three consecutive Class AA championships and was named the 2019 Montana Gatorade Player of the Year. “It was kind of just the whole program that had to just communicate a lot through different ways, and we just had to have multiple conversations about it,” Katelyn said. “It was a really hard decision to make.” Added Kiersten: “We knew going into that tournament there would be a decision that would need to be made since ultimately if we won we were going to face San Jose no matter what since they were on our side of the bracket. It’s a really hard situation to be in as student-athletes who work your whole career to get to that point of being in a Mountain West championship and working towards a Mountain West championship. To have that taken away is really heartbreaking. There’s a part of you that really wants to play in that game and then there’s a part of you that wants to stand for what you believe is right and stand for future generations.” The Van Kirks said they’ll continue to fight for “fair play.” “We’ll see with the higher court and what happens there,” said Katelyn. “If that doesn’t work out, then I think we’re just going to keep going up and just keep trying to fight the fight. Try our best just to figure out just a fair way of fair play for girls and also boys.” While the SJSU player has been identified by some news outlets, the Belgrade News is not publishing her name to protect her privacy. She played the three previous years without incident, and neither the player nor SJSU has spoken publicly about her identity. Kiersten said her participation became an issue this year. “It was definitely something that was under the radar,” Kiersten said. “There was always suspicions and a little bit of talk about it being an issue, but no one really knew until this year when I believe that one of this athlete’s roommates found out. And then in preseason that’s when it really hit the news and that’s when it came a bigger topic of discussion.” Kiersten, who is a junior opposite for the Broncos, has competed against the player the past three seasons. She noted the moment that something didn’t seem right. “I remember this one play, it was the last play of my freshman year, and there was an overpass. This athlete just jumped up like insanely high and just hit it straight down,” she said. “I remember after the game, we were all like, there’s no way. I’ve never seen any female athlete do that before.” According to the NCAA Transgender Student-Athlete Participation Policy, if a transgender woman meets the parameters set by that sport’s governing body she is allowed to compete in women’s sports. For volleyball, a transgender woman is considered eligible if she can suppress her testosterone under 10 nmol/L. San Jose State told CNN and ESPN that all of its student athletes are eligible to compete on its women’s volleyball team. Boise State was the first school to forfeit a match followed by Utah State, Nevada and Wyoming. After Boise State’s first forfeiture, the Mountain West Conference updated its policy, Kiersten said, to allow the forfeited matches to count as wins for SJSU and losses for the team’s that opted not to play. “In the NCAA, it’s just counted as a no contest,” Kiersten noted. “But the Mountain West changed it so it would be counted as a forfeit loss and win. So that was a big aspect of the Mountain West lawsuit to get those wins and losses removed since it would change the standings in the tournament.” In addition to the Van Kirks, SJSU co-captain Brooke Slusser and assistant coach Melissa Batie-Smoose are among the plaintiffs. “Obviously the co-captain is also the setter on the team and so she’s in this lawsuit and she’s trying to make a stand and same with the assistant coach. I commend them for taking a stand. I feel that is a really hard position to be in especially when you are on a team that player and you see nothing being changed,” said Kiersten. “But then again, all of other athletes ended up forfeiting games to take a stand against it and she still gets an opportunity to play for a championship on that team. I do commend her, and I think it’s great that she’s trying to make a change, but at the same time she was able to play in a championship and every team forfeited and didn’t get that experience.” Colorado State defeated SJSU 27-25, 25-20, 23-25, 25-16 in the tournament championship match on Saturday. Katelyn said she understands that there are people who see the situation differently and feel that a transgender athlete deserves the same opportunity that she has earned. “I think that either way there’s always going to be someone that’s upset. I just think that whatever is best for them, and I want the best for them, but I just think that playing in women’s sports is unfair competition and also a safety hazard as well,” Katelyn said. “I would say that men and women are created differently. Since birth we’re differently structured and hormones aren’t just going to change that. I think that just in sports it’s a big deal because men have that advantage over women, and women have fought so hard for their rights for so long, so I just think that we try very hard and as women we deserve those spots.” Despite the controversy, it was a successful season for Boise State. The Broncos finished with a 19-10 overall record, which includes the three forfeit losses, and were 10-8 in the Mountain West Conference. “It was still a really great season. I think we had a great season competing despite all of the controversy that happened,” said Kiersten. “It was kind of like a Covid situation in kind of a way where you have to take the games that you’re given and go all out in those games. ATLANTA (AP) — Georgia quarterback Carson Beck will not return after he was hit on his throwing hand on the final play of an ugly first half Saturday in the Southeastern Conference championship game against Texas. Beck was hit by outside linebacker Trey Moore, forcing a fumble recovered by Anthony Hill Jr., who then lost the ball on an errant attempt to extend the play with a lateral as time expired. Beck was one of the last players to return to the field following halftime. He was holding his helmet but did not warm up remained on the sideline as backup Gunner Stockton led the offense to its first touchdown on the Bulldogs' first drive of the second half. Georgia coach Kirby Smart told ESPN Beck would not return to the game and said he had no details on the hand injury. Beck had the right arm wrapped in ice on the Georgia bench. In contrast, the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi scored 30 seats. Poll managers of the BJP, Shiv Sena, and the NCP went down to the drawing board and initiated corrective measures to turn the tide in the assembly polls. The people's sentiment apparently started changing in Mahayuti's favour when the state budget presented by Deputy CM and Finance Minister Ajit Pawar introduced the 'Mukhyamantri Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana' offering financial assistance of Rs 1,500 per month to women from financially weaker sections. This scheme was modelled on the MP government's Ladli Behna Yojana, which is believed to have helped the BJP retain power in the last elections by a massive margin. The Mahayuti government formally launched the Ladki Bahin scheme in mid-August and organised programmes for its publicity on a large scale. The growing popularity of the scheme forced the MVA to announce the Mahalaxmi scheme if voted to power, offering Rs 3,000 per month to women. The Mahayuti countered MVA's poll promise with an assurance to raise the Ladki Bahin allowance to Rs 2,100. Political analysts said the BJP's micro-management and course correction post the general election results have paid rich dividends in the assembly polls. Deputy CM and BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis raised "vote jihad" and "dharmayudh of votes" themes sensing Muslim vote consolidation in MVA's favour which galvanised loyal BJP voters. Fadnavis latched on to the purported appeal by an Islamic scholar for "vote jihad" against the Mahayuti government and called for a "dharmayudh of votes". Talking about the Mahayuti's stupendous performance, Fadnavis on Saturday said the mandate was against appeasement politics and reflected the people's trust in PM Narendra Modi 's 'ek hain to safe hain' appeal. Addressing a joint press conference in the evening, CM Eknath Shinde pointed out that the three parties had finalised their seat-sharing amicably. "We learnt lessons from the Lok Sabha debacle and took corrective steps," Ajit Pawar said. Senior journalist Prakash Akolkar said the BJP's campaign was powered by RSS which treated the electoral contest as a "do-or-die battle for the BJP in Maharashtra". "The lion's share of this victory goes to the RSS cadres. With the penetration of Hindutva at all levels, including social media, the BJP and RSS made people believe that Hindutva is the main saviour. The 'ek hain to safe hain' agenda and the hatred for Muslims worked," he told PTI. The massive rout meant the Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray and NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar will struggle to keep their flocks together, he said. Shocked by the MVA's debacle, Thackeray termed the people's mandate completely unexpected and incomprehensible. Senior journalist Jatin Desai said the results were surprising given a palpable sense of "unrest" among people. ''Whoever has travelled extensively in the state noticed tremendous unrest among people, especially farmers for the agrarian crisis. Didn't the farmers think of their MSP and crop produce before casting their vote?" he asked. According to journalist Abhay Deshpande, the "silent wave" in Mahayuti's favour was not sensed by anyone. "The number of Ladki Bahin beneficiaries stood at 2.35 crore. There were 70 lakh additional votes polled as compared to the Lok Sabha elections, out of which 43 lakh came from women voters," he said. Similarly, the Mahayuti alliance played the polarisation gamble against the caste consolidation, which was a decisive factor in the MVA factory during Lok Sabha polls, he added. Congress' in-charge of Maharashtra Ramesh Chennithala also said that the results were unexpected. Senior BJP leader Madhav Bhandari told PTI that the record-break victory was unexpected and unpredictable. "It is a matter of pride. Congress showed arrogance after its Lok Sabha election success. But its politics of Muslim appeasement boomeranged and 'ek hain toh safe hain' slogan percolated deeply," he felt. Senior Congress leader Ratnakar Mahajan said the election result contradicts the public mood. "There was so much anger against Fadnavis and Shinde. Did the angry voters step out to vote?" he wondered.
