In Nebraska football lore, the Huskers’ 36-34 victory against Miami in the 1962 Gotham Bowl holds a special place . That inaugural bowl win arrived in the second — and last — Gotham Bowl, played on the third Saturday in December of coach Bob Devaney’s first season. It reached 400 games this year. There is history involved, too, for Matt Rhule, the second-year Nebraska coach who lived in New York for a decade as a child . Rhule has waxed several times this month about his fond feelings for the city. He led the Nebraska players through a practice at the New York Giants facility on Monday. The Huskers attended a Knicks game on Christmas day and visited Central Park, the 9/11 Memorial and Museum and the New York Stock Exchange. It is the only artifact held by the Yankees — who operate the Pinstripe Bowl — from Nebraska’s last visit here. The asking price was $2,200. A spokesman for the Nebraska athletic department said he was unsure if the school owned a copy. There are a few out there. An eBay retailer in New York said he sold one this year for $10,000. He didn’t tell me who bought it. But he said, after listing the item, that he heard from people desperate to own it, telling him “it would complete their collection.” He has more of the programs. I saw photos — not the shots available to the public on eBay; rather photos I requested from him in an effort to verify the existence of his memorabilia. His name is John. He’s 20 years old. He requested his last name and exact location be withheld for his safety and the security of the programs. Friday, I met with him at a coffee shop outside of the city. He brought one of his programs. I paged through it. It’s in excellent condition. It appears authentic. Then again, I’m not a professional authenticator. John said he acquired the Gotham Bowl programs from his father, who managed an apartment complex in Yonkers, N.Y., from 1993 to 1998. A tenant who moved out during that time was the son of a person connected to one of the participating teams, according to John. The tenant left behind a box. He asked John’s father to discard it with the rest of the tenant’s garbage. Inside that box were Gotham Bowl programs, John said. His father held onto them, unaware of their value. John said he discovered them recently. He’s not a fan of football. He knew nothing about the history of bowl games in New York. John began to learn about the programs, he said, only after he listed the first one for a much lower price than $10,000. When you hear a $20 million-a-year salary, the first thought should gravitate toward an athlete getting paid. But not in 2024. Even analysts, who aren’t actually on the field but are off it, talking about a game, are about to reset the market by a margin that’s never been done before. Yes, we are talking about Stephen A. Smith, who is set to be paid more than the current highest-paid NFL running back. After months of negotiations between WME (Smith’s agency) and ESPN (Smith’s employer), the bar has been set at a $20 million-a-year contract. This deal is structured for multiple years — at least five but possibly up to six. This adds up to a $120 million contract, which is not even being earned by several quarterbacks. Notably, highest-paid running back Christian McCaffrey ($17.2 million), highest-paid tight end Travis Kelce ($17.1 million), and highest-paid center Creed Humphrey ($18 million) will neither make as much money (per year) as Stephen A. Smith, nor have contracts as long. And wait till you hear how much Smith’s analyst peers are getting paid. While there is no clear information about how much Shannon Sharpe is making at ESPN, estimated reports suggest that he earns about $3 million per year. Despite having a playing background and two decades of broadcasting experience, he is getting paid significantly less. The former tight end has arguably become the soul of First Take , the face of which is Stephen A., yet a $17 million gap doesn’t make sense. Even Pat McAfee is making less than Stephen A. So, why is ESPN paying Stephen A. this much money? Well, the truth is, the leading analyst is delivering the results that the media giant would expect from someone earning $20 million a year. Stephen A. has turned First Take into a household staple, especially in the morning. While cable TV is losing business, losing customers, and shifting to digital, Stephen A. hasn’t lost his viewers; he’s doubled them instead, maybe more. Per episode, First Take is averaging over 500k viewers, something no other show can rack up. The one show that could — the Undisputed — is no longer relevant . It’s the Stephen A. Smith effect. By ROB GILLIES, Associated Press TORONTO (AP) — Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told Donald Trump that Americans would also suffer if the president-elect follows through on a plan to impose sweeping tariffs on Canadian products , a Canadian minister who attended their recent dinner said Monday. Trump threatened to impose tariffs on products from Canada and Mexico if they don’t stop what he called the flow of drugs and migrants across their borders with the United States. He said on social media last week that he would impose a 25% tax on all products entering the U.S. from Canada and Mexico as one of his first executive orders. Canadian Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc, whose responsibilities include border security, attended a dinner with Trump and Trudeau at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago club on Friday. Trudeau requested the meeting in a bid to avoid the tariffs by convincing Trump that the northern border is nothing like the U.S. southern border with Mexico . “The prime minister of course spoke about the importance of protecting the Canadian economy and Canadian workers from tariffs, but we also discussed with our American friends the negative impact that those tariffs could have on their economy, on affordability in the United States as well,” LeBlanc said in Parliament. If Trump makes good on his threat to slap 25% tariffs on everything imported from Mexico and Canada, the price increases that could follow will collide with his campaign promise to give American families a break from inflation. Economists say companies would have little choice but to pass along the added costs, dramatically raising prices for food, clothing, automobiles, alcohol and other goods. The Produce Distributors Association, a Washington trade group, said last week that tariffs will raise prices for fresh fruit and vegetables and hurt U.S. farmers when the countries retaliate. Canada is already examining possible retaliatory tariffs on certain items from the U.S. should Trump follow through on the threat. After his dinner with Trump, Trudeau returned home without assurances the president-elect will back away from threatened tariffs on all products from the major American trading partner. Trump called the talks “productive” but signaled no retreat from a pledge that Canada says unfairly lumps it in with Mexico over the flow of drugs and migrants into the United States. “The idea that we came back empty handed is completely false,” LeBlanc said. “We had a very productive discussion with Mr. Trump and his future Cabinet secretaries. ... The commitment from Mr. Trump to continue to work with us was far from empty handed.” Joining Trump and Trudeau at dinner were Howard Lutnick, Trump’s nominee for commerce secretary, North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum, Trump’s pick to lead the Interior Department, and Mike Waltz, Trump’s choice to be his national security adviser. Canada’s ambassador to the U.S., Kirsten Hillman, told The Associated Press on Sunday that “the message that our border is so vastly different than the Mexican border was really understood.” Hillman, who sat at an adjacent table to Trudeau and Trump, said Canada is not the problem when it comes to drugs and migrants. U.S. customs agents seized 43 pounds of fentanyl at the Canadian border during the last fiscal year, compared with 21,100 pounds at the Mexican border. Most of the fentanyl reaching the U.S. — where it causes about 70,000 overdose deaths annually — is made by Mexican drug cartels using precursor chemicals smuggled from Asia. On immigration, the U.S. Border Patrol reported 1.53 million encounters with migrants at the southwest border with Mexico between October 2023 and September 2024. That compares to 23,721 encounters at the Canadian border during that time. Canada is the top export destination for 36 U.S. states. Nearly $3.6 billion Canadian (US$2.7 billion) worth of goods and services cross the border each day. About 60% of U.S. crude oil imports are from Canada, and 85% of U.S. electricity imports as well. Canada is also the largest foreign supplier of steel, aluminum and uranium to the U.S. and has 34 critical minerals and metals that the Pentagon is eager for and investing for national security.

Gov. Kathy Hochul has asked the Department of Homeland Security to reverse course and fully staff the northern border with Canada, after the department announced last month it was cutting operating hours at four ports of entry. RAISED CONCERNS In a letter to Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas dated Nov. 27, Hochul said the decision to put four of New York’s border crossings with Canada on twelve- and sixteen-hour schedules, a reduction from the usual 24-hour operations, is a mistake. “These changes are wholly inconsistent with what is needed now in this state,” she wrote. “I have previously raised my concerns in meetings with the Biden-Harris Administration, and write to once again request the Department of Homeland Security immediately direct staffing and resources to expand enforcement activities along the U.S.-Canada border. In light of this week’s actions, I ask you to immediately reverse the decision to suspend 24/7 staffing along our northern border at critical locations.” The letter was first reported by the Albany Times-Union. POPULAR ROUTE In it, Hochul said the trend of increasing numbers of attempts to cross the border illegally should warrant a firmer response and said the historically relaxed policies around northern border security are partially to blame. “Long-standing immigration policies of the U.S. and Canada have contributed to the northern border becoming an increasingly popular route for non-citizens seeking entry into the U.S., policies which New York does not control,” she wrote. She cited Border Patrol statistics, showing that there were nearly 19,000 reported encounters with people illegally crossing at some point along the entire northern border in August of this year, compared to 4,500 in August of 2021. The region with the sharpest increase in encounters along the border is the Swanton Sector, covering St. Lawrence County east to New Hampshire, while also hosting one of the smallest complements of Border Patrol agents. “As of early 2024, the Swanton Sector has funding for 338 Border Patrol agents, with only 260 filled, but this area of the border requires 728 agents to carry out sufficient enforcement for elevated levels of border crossings,” she wrote. She warned that illegal crossings come with steep risks for those attempting it. In upstate New York and New England, a wintertime or even early spring crossing comes with the risk of losing the way, freezing to death, or drowning. In a much-publicized case from March 2023, an attempt to smuggle a group of Indian and Romanian nationals into the U.S. through the Akwesasne, St. Regis Mohawk lands between Ontario and St. Lawrence County, resulted in nine drowning deaths. Both the U.S. and Canada have moved to charge those involved in the human smuggling operation. GREATER RESOURCES Hochul said she is doing what she can at her level to address the issue—directing $5 million from the federal State Homeland Security Program to enhance state-level security at border crossings. The state Division of Criminal Justice Services is rolling out a broader license plate reader network along border roads, and the State Police are investing in increased staffing and technology, including drone-based surveillance and handheld x-ray machines to examine cargo. She also said she was disappointed that the bipartisan border legislation proposed earlier this year, which would have directed more federal resources to northern border enforcement among other changes to immigration and border security policies, did not pass. “Had it passed, states like New York would have greater resources to handle the influx of migrants nationwide,” she said. “Despite it not passing, New York still needs to expand enforcement at the northern border today.” A change in border policies is likely to come with the new Presidential administration in January, with border policies to be led by West Carthage native and recent Jefferson County resident Thomas D. Homan. Homan has started discussions with the mayor of New York City to discuss expedited deportation of migrants and people seeking asylum that have been sent to that city from the southern border. The fire engulfed the aircraft carrying 181 people when it skidded off the runway just after landing and struck a barrier. The transport ministry said the incident happened at 9:03 a.m. local time. The National Fire Agency said the fire was almost put out but officials were still trying to pull people from the Jeju Air passenger plane at the airport in the southern town of Muan. At least 28 people had died in the fire, the agency said. Emergency workers pulled out two people — one passenger and one crew member. It said it deployed 32 fire trucks and several helicopters to contain the fire. Emergency officials said they were examining the cause of the fire. Local TV stations aired footage showing thick pillows of black smoke billowing from the plane engulfed with flame. The incident came as South Korea is embroiled into a huge political crisis triggered by President Yoon Suk Yeol’s stunning imposition of martial law and ensuing impeachment. Last Friday, South Korean lawmakers impeached acting President Han Duck-soo and suspended his duties, making Deputy Prime Minister Choi Sang-mok to take over. Choi ordered officials to employ all available resources to rescue the passengers and crew, according to Yonhap news agency. Yoon’s office said his chief secretary, Chung Jin-suk, will preside over an emergency meeting between senior presidential staff later on Sunday to discuss the crash.
