With the holiday season fast approaching, we know Black Friday is a great time to find some deals on VR Headsets. We've already got you covered on the best Meta Quest 3 and 3S deals , but once you have one, you'll need some accessories. Scott Stein, CNET's resident VR expert, has scoured the interwebs looking for the best Meta Quest 3 and 3S accessories available for Black Friday. Here's what he has to say: "The Meta Quest 3 and Quest 3S are the best VR headsets available right now. They're relatively low-priced, are great self-contained game consoles, and they can flex to be fitness devices and work accessories, too. The Quest 3S is also an even better buy right now, with an extra $75 in credit from certain retailers. While the Quest 3 and 3S have everything you need right in the box, there are some useful accessory extras that could make life even better. Some of the deals on these accessories right now are well worth considering." "More comfortable head straps, extra battery packs, extended USB cables for PC Link gaming, and charge docks can all make life a little better at home. Travel cases and some fitness accessories like controller straps and floor mats can also be really useful, or silicone facial interfaces to prevent sweat damage on the headset – we'll update this list when we see deals on any of these and more." Best Meta Quest 3/3S head strap deals A more comfortable, stable-fitting hard headband can be a huge help for keeping VR headsets on your face during workouts or for extended work sessions. This padded strap is discounted and comes highly recommended by many (CNET hasn't tested it yet). Kiwi's head strap is also sold with a battery pack built-in, and the package costs a lot less than Meta's similarly-designed accessory. An estimated three hours of extra boost, per Kiwi, should at least double your playtime over a regular Quest session. It may look odd, but BoboVR's head strap systems are loved for their adjustable, visor-like designs. $40 for a comfort headstrap that also has a swappable battery pack is a solid deal - the one included 5200mAh battery promises an extra 2 hours of playtime. The yoges battery strap houses a 6000mah battery that helps balance the headset, making it more comfortable to use while also giving you an hour or so more play time. It's also way more comfortable than the standard strap. Other Meta Quest 3/3S accessories Meta's own slim charge dock made specifically for the Quest 3 charges the Quest using contact pins, and has contactless rechargeable battery packs for the controllers. It's more expensive than some third party options, but its slim profile is helpful for narrower shelf setups. If you're PC gaming using the Quest headset (which you can do), you'll probably want a good long USB cable to link with your PC. This is specifically designed for just that job, and its 16 foot length and breakout port for USB charging should do the job for most rooms. Why these deals matter The Meta Quest 3 and the 3S are the best VR headsets you can buy right now, and any time accessories are discounted, it's worth taking note. Christmas is not far away, and if you have bought your loved one a Meta Quest 3, then it's worth picking up some accessories to go with it.
TOKYO , Dec. 15, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Representatives from China and Japan shared their insights on promoting artificial intelligence (AI) governance and data sharing at a sub-forum of the 20th Beijing-Tokyo Forum in Tokyo recently. The sub-forum contributed eastern wisdom to AI governance and digital social development, demonstrating the significance of international cooperation for the development of the digital economy, according to Gao Shaolin, advisor at Peking University's Legal Artificial Intelligence Research Center. AI governance framework The participants agreed that the next 10 years will be a critical period for the development of AI. Gao Wen, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), said since China's State Council issued a guideline on developing AI in 2017, the nation has made significant progress in AI research and development and industrial layout, especially in computing power and 5G network construction. By the end of 2023, China had over half of the world's 1.57 billion 5G users, according to the World Internet Development Report 2024. It ranked second globally in AI and computing power scale, which has laid a solid foundation for the rapid development of AI. Tatsuo Yamazaki , project professor at the International University of Health and Welfare, said it was very meaningful for Japan and China to discuss strengthening AI governance rules. Fumihiko Kamio , research director of the Nomura Research Institute, echoed his view. He emphasized that the core goal of AI technology is to improve productivity and eliminate obstacles to social development, and called on Chinese and Japanese experts to work together to build an AI governance framework to cope with the global challenges. Deepening international cooperation China put forth the Global AI Governance Initiative in October last year. In July, the UN General Assembly adopted a China -sponsored resolution on enhancing international cooperation on AI capacity-building. The participants spoke highly of the Global Cross-Border Data Flow Cooperation Initiative recently proposed by China . They agreed that AI governance requires global collaboration, especially in the formulation of international standards and the construction of ethical frameworks, where China and Japan can play an active role. Ding Wenhua, academician of the CAE, said China and Japan have both similarities and differences in technology development and governance priorities, so deepening cooperation will bring unique value to global AI governance. " China and Japan should deepen AI technology cooperation between enterprises, work together in AI security research, talent exchange, and jointly explore more possibilities for the application of technology," Wang Zhongyuan , president of the Beijing Academy of Artificial Intelligence, said. Balancing development & risks AI governance refers to the guardrails established to ensure AI systems and tools remain safe and ethical and respect human rights. Xu Zhilong , editor-in-chief of Science and Technology Daily, stressed that AI, as a revolutionary technology, has far-reaching impacts on all areas of society and economy. However, its potential risks such as data leakage and the spread of false information should not be ignored. "Technological progress and security ethics should be developed in a balanced way to ensure that AI technology always serves the progress of human civilization," Xu said. AI governance should not only heed the current technological ethics issues, but also prevent possible long-term risks, such as AI going out of human control, according to Toshio Iwamoto , senior corporate advisor of NTT DATA. He said AI R&D and application should abide by the principles of fairness, transparency, safety and availability. Yuan Yue, chairman of Beijing Dataway Horizon, shared his view from the perspective of regulatory models. "Policy choices should be based on the current status and goals of national technological development," Yuan said, adding that China prefers to provide a more friendly development environment for enterprises while ensuring an effective response to risks. Oregon man who asked for Capitol riot sentencing to be delayed after Trump inauguration gets 9 months in prisonIn a significant breakthrough for biomedical research and drug development, scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have introduced an innovative open-source AI model named Boltz-1. This powerful tool accelerates understanding biomolecular structures, a critical aspect of developing new drugs and therapies. Developed by researchers at the MIT Jameel Clinic for Machine Learning in Health, Boltz-1 marks a pivotal milestone as the first fully open-source model that rivals the advanced capabilities of Google’s AlphaFold3. This new model promises to democratize access to cutting-edge tools in structural biology, enabling researchers around the globe to collaborate and advance scientific knowledge. Leading the development of Boltz-1 were MIT graduate students, Jeremy Wohlwend and Gabriele Corso, alongside Saro Passaro, a research affiliate at the Jameel Clinic, and esteemed MIT professors Regina Barzilay and Tommi Jaakkola. AI model Wohlwend expressed the ambition behind Boltz-1, stating, “We hope for this to be a starting point for the community. We chose the name Boltz-1 to signify that this is not the end of the line. We are eager for contributions from researchers around the world.” The role of proteins in biological processes cannot be overstated; their shape directly influences their function. Thus, predicting and understanding protein structure is vital for designing new drugs and engineering proteins for specific uses. However, the complex folding process of amino acid chains into 3D structures has been challenging for researchers for many years. DeepMind’s earlier models, like AlphaFold2—whose creators were awarded the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry—have made significant strides in accurately predicting protein structures. However, criticisms arose when AlphaFold3, which builds upon AlphaFold2 by incorporating a generative AI model, was only partially open-source and commercially available. This prompted the scientific community to seek alternative solutions, leading to the development of AI-based Boltz-1. Improving drug discovery The MIT team began by replicating the foundational approach of AlphaFold3 AI. They then delved into the underlying generative diffusion model, identifying enhancements that improved accuracy and efficiency. The result is not only the documentation of the model but also the entire pipeline for training and fine-tuning Boltz-1, which the team has made available for other scientists to utilize and build upon. Regina Barzilay, a professor and member of the development team, praised her colleagues’ dedication, saying, “I am immensely proud of everyone involved in bringing Boltz-1 to fruition. This project demanded countless hours of hard work, and we are excited about exploring further improvements in the future.” The journey to develop Boltz-1 had its challenges. Wohlwend noted that navigating the ambiguity in data from the Protein Data Bank—a comprehensive repository of biomolecular structures—required extensive domain knowledge and perseverance. Yet, their rigorous experimentation confirmed that Boltz-1 achieves accuracy levels comparable to AlphaFold3 across various complex molecular predictions. Peer recognition for the project has been overwhelmingly positive. Biomedical research Tommi Jaakkola hailed the team’s achievements , stating, “What they’ve accomplished is remarkable. Their hard work will make biomolecular structure prediction more accessible and will revolutionize advancements in molecular sciences.” The team is committed to improving Boltz-1, streamlining prediction times, and enhancing its capabilities. They encourage researchers to explore the model through its GitHub repository and engage with fellow users via Slack. Mathai Mammen, CEO of Parabilis Medicines, praised Boltz-1 as a “breakthrough” model. He explained that by open-sourcing their advancements, the MIT team democratizes essential structural biology tools, which could significantly expedite the development of transformative medicines. As researchers look to the future, Wohlwend stated, “There are many years of work ahead to enhance these models. We are excited to collaborate and see how the community utilizes this tool.” With the launch of Boltz-1, the MIT team has made strides in science and set the stage for collaborative innovation in biomedical research.
You’re giving your child a smartphone, tablet, laptop, gaming device or some other variation of the latest connected, shiny, must-have electronic doodad. And why not, you think? All their friends have one. They’ve done all their chores without whining (too much), do just fine in school, and promise to continue being as sweet as can be — if they get that one gadget-y gift that will make their lives complete. Kids as young want their own devices. That’s a reality of the world we live in today. But it doesn’t mean you should just wrap up that expensive everything-gadget and hope for the best. After all, the and the payoffs can be short-lived. (Also, don’t give a preschooler their own smartphone. That’s just nuts.) So, before you hand over the keys to the world of smart gadgets, here’s what you need to know — and do — to keep your child safe and secure. Digital parenting is hard. As a tech journalist — and mom — I know firsthand how tough it is to stay one step ahead of the negatives that constant connection brings. From social media, cyberbullying and even device addiction — the struggle is real — yours and theirs. just published its latest findings on teens, social media and technology. The survey found that “ about technology’s impact on youth, many teens are as digitally connected as ever. Most teens use social media and have a smartphone, and nearly half say they’re online almost constantly.” Take a moment to consider what device addiction is like from a teenager's perspective. Reddit and offer valuable insights. Listen to what teenagers wish their parents had known and done to understand their struggles better. I love a great tool, and contracts that set everyone’s expectations are necessary. I use the which the folks behind the safety app created. They gave us permission to repost a handy digital version at that lets you fill it out, save it digitally, and print out a copy that you can post to your fridge. Fill it out with your child, and refer to it as often as you need to keep everything copacetic at home. Raising balanced digital humans takes a lot of time, energy and patience to learn a whole lot about technology, often one step behind your little one. That means the earlier you start, the better. Set up expectations and have “safe surfing” talks early and often. If you need some additional guidance here, try site or other fantastic resources from s like . The most crucial next step is to set up an account tailored to your child's needs on the specific new device you are giving them. Both iOS and Android offer specialized accounts for children, which integrate seamlessly with the (Apple) and (Android) features. To set up Family Sharing on an iOS device, go to the Settings app, add a new account and put in your child’s correct birthdate. This unlocks age-appropriate app ratings and restrictions. For Android users, setting up Family Link involves creating a Google account for your child and adding them to your Family Group. In both cases, you, as the parent, see download activity, usage statistics and can enable location sharing, which I highly recommend. There are several options within the family apps, but I recommend these: : Enable “Limit Adult Websites” on iOS and SafeSearch on Android. Restricting app downloads to the appropriate age range is a must. Pick the age group your child falls into, or choose to block app downloads entirely, only allow apps that you, as the parent, install yourself. On both iOS and Android, limiting what content your youngster can view happens within Family Sharing and Family Link, respectively. In both cases, setting the content ratings to G and TV-G prevents children from stumbling across anything too “adult” for them. You’re not done yet. These settings take effect within built-in apps like Safari and Chrome, but aren’t always entirely comprehensive. That’s where third-party apps come in. Use apps specifically made for this job like ($10/month), ($14/month), ($55/year) or one of the others we’ve reviewed. Be sure whatever you choose works on just about anything — iOS, Android, Windows, etc. — and provides restriction options for specific apps like Snapchat or TikTok. How much time is too much time for a kid to stare at a digital screen? If I had the answer, I’d probably be lying on a beach right now. The truth is that every child is different, and every parent’s limits are unique. Even the says no hard number makes sense for every kid. So, what to do? I prefer a schedule-based system that doesn’t put a strict limit on screen time but still encourages kids to look at something other than their phone, tablet or computer for the vast majority of the day (and night). Both iOS and Android provide the ability to limit app usage by scheduling windows of time where it’s allowed and blocking apps outside of those times. My daughter is well into adulthood, but if I were setting screen time limitations for a tween or younger teenager today, it might look something like this: During the school year, there’s really no need for most apps during the day or even night. - ALLOWED - - - Kids get home from school and should tackle their homework, but might need access to the internet. - ALLOWED - ALLOWED - - : With homework done, it’s time to have fun. - ALLOWED - ALLOWED - ALLOWED - ALLOWED Falling asleep to a favorite show or music is no big deal, but games and web surfing end now. (Assuming she normally falls asleep around 10 pm.) But remember, no phones in bedrooms at night. Charge them up in the kitchen or other common areas where they won’t disrupt sleep. - ALLOWED - - ALLOWED - There are a million ways to handle this, so this is just one example. You know your child better than I do, so take some time to come up with a balanced plan that makes sense — and don’t be afraid to change things over time! On top of the guardrails you enable when setting up a child’s account, both iOS and Android feature additional safeguards as well. For iPhone and iPad, enabling adds a layer of protection from unwanted messages your child might receive, including harmful images. Going one step further, turning off location sharing is a wise move too, as many apps ask for it without really needing it, potentially opening the door to real-time location tracking of your youngster. Android features to keep malware from being installed through Google’s Play Store, but parents should also disable location tracking for apps that don’t need it to function. You can also restrict messaging to specific phone numbers to keep spammers from flooding your kid’s message inbox. These controls and guardrails are fantastic ways to keep your child safe with their new device but don’t forget that your insights are the key to making this all work. Encourage your new phone-toting kid to ask questions and share how they use their gadget. Ask them about cool things they’ve seen on YouTube or their favorite TikTok (if they’re allowed). The goal is to empower them to navigate the digital world responsibly so that once you take off the training wheels, the oversight and interactions you have now create positive results down the road.
