Gen Z and the art of pausing life without guilt to rechargeMaverick McNealy birdies the last hole at Sea Island to finally become PGA Tour winner

Freedom Party's Styria Triumph: A Political Shift in Austria

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. (AP) — Maverick McNealy has learned in his five years on the PGA Tour that trying to win a tournament is “designed to make you feel as uncomfortable as you possibly can.” Standing in the 18th fairway Sunday in the RSM Classic, part of a four-way tie for the lead that included Florida State sophomore Luke Clanton, the 29-year-old McNealy had every reason to be uncomfortable. He had gone nine hole without a birdie. From 185 yards away he chose a 6-iron, a club that had gone anywhere from 120 yards to 240 yards during a week of big wind and cold weather, and at that moment as warm as it had been all tournament. The shot made it look like he had been there before, covering the flag and landing 5 feet away for a birdie and his first PGA Tour victory in his 134th start as a pro. It sends him to Maui to start next year and to the Masters in April for the first time. “A moment I'll never forget,” he said. Daniel Berger missed a 20-foot birdie attempt on the 18th that preceded McNealy's winner. He tied for second with Nico Echavarria and Clanton, both of whom missed par putts from inside 8 feet on the final hole that created the four-way tie. Berger got a small consolation prize, moving inside the top 125 to keep a full PGA Tour card for 2025 when the fields will be smaller and only the top 100 keep cards. Henrik Norlander, who was No. 126 in the FedEx Cup last year, had a 63-68 weekend and joined Berger as the two players who moved into the top 125. For Joel Dahmen, it was a matter of staying there. He was at No. 124 coming into the final tournament, had to make a 5-foot par putt just to make the cut on the number and then delivered a tee-to-green clinic — along with holing a 113-yard sand wedge for eagle early in his round — for a closing 64. It was enough to stay at No. 124 with nine points to spare. “Two of the biggest pressure moments of my career I showed up, and I can take that going forward,” Dahmen said. Clanton was a shot away from joining Nick Dunlap as amateur winners on the PGA Tour this year. Clanton, who has taken over as the top-ranked amateur in the world, now has two runner-up finishes and four top 10s in the seven PGA Tour starts the last five months. He had the look of a winner, especially with McNealy stuck in neutral, when he poured in birdie putts on the 14th and 16th holes to tie for the lead. But he tugged his approach to the 18th into bunker, blasted out to 7 feet and missed his par putt. He shot 66. “It’s going to be a tough one to definitely take, for sure, after bogeying the last,” Clanton said. “But I think it’s proven to me that out here I can win, so I’ll be training for that.” Echavarria, who won in Japan a month ago, had not made a bogey all day until going long on the 18th, chipping to 9 feet and catching the lip with his par putt. Michael Thorbjornsen was poised to move into the top 125 until he pulled his approach into the water on the par-5 15th hole and made bogey, closing with three pars for a 69. He tied for eighth and finished at No. 129. Thorbjornsen still has a full card next year from being No. 1 in PGA Tour University, but his status won't be as high. McNealy, son of Sun Microsystems co-founder Scott McNealy, had been doing some of his best work outside the ropes, particularly effecting a change in FedEx Cup points distribution to make it more equitable. Missing was a victory, and this one came down to the wire. He went out in 33 and led by two going to the back nine, and then it became a grind. He holed a 15-foot par putt from the fringe on the 11th to stay in the lead, and saved par after going bunker-to-bunker on the 13th. But he dropped a shot with an errant drive on the 14th, and when Echavarria birdied the 15th ahead of him, McNealy was out of the lead for the first time all day. He answered at just the right time, a 6-iron that covered the flag and settled just over 5 feet away. The victory gets him into three $20 million events over the first two months of the year starting with The Sentry at Kapalua, along with his first trip to Augusta National. Saquon Barkley tops 2,000 yards rushing and moves within 100 of Dickerson's record PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Saquon Barkley became the ninth running back in NFL history to top 2,000 yards rushing in a season, reaching the milestone with a 23-yard run in the fourth quarter against the Dallas Cowboys. That rush gave Barkley 2,005 yards with one game left and left him exactly 100 yards from Eric Dickerson’s record of 2,105, set in 1984 for the Los Angeles Rams. Barkley could potentially top the record in next week’s finale against the New York Giants. However, that game will be mostly meaningless for the Eagles, who could opt to rest Barkley to protect him from injury ahead of the playoffs.Sernova (TSE:SVA) Hits New 12-Month Low – Here’s What Happened

Seamer Mohammed Shami will not be considered for India’s fourth and fifth Tests in Australia due to a knee injury. The 34-year-old has fully recovered from his heel injury after undergoing surgery in February. He was not picked in the squad but there had been a chance he could have been added to support pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, if he were fit and available. Know the news with the 7NEWS app: Download today Shami has not played international cricket since the ODI World Cup last year but has returned to domestic cricket to prove his fitness. “His left knee has exhibited minor swelling due to increased joint loading from his bowling workload. The swelling is on the expected lines, owing to the increased bowling after a prolonged period,” the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said in a statement. “Based on the current medical assessment, the BCCI medical team has determined that his knee requires more time for controlled exposure to bowling loads. “Consequently, he has not been deemed fit for consideration for the remaining two tests of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.” India battled hard to earn a draw in the rain-hit third test in Brisbane, leaving the five-match series tied at 1-1 heading into the Boxing Day clash. Despite not having Shami by his side, the Boxing Day Test wicket is likely to have Bumrah licking his lips, regardless of the expected Day 1 furnace at the MCG. The MCG has made a deliberate effort over the past few years to make its Test pitches more friendly for pace bowlers. Head curator Matt Page was asked if Bumrah, the standout bowler in the series so far, would be pleased with the pitch prepared. “All the good bowlers get excited when they come here now. It gets through well for us,” Page said on Monday. “We’re never going to be as quick as Perth and Brisbane, but over the last few years we’ve managed to get some pace in it, which has created that excitement. “There’s a bit of grass on it. If you’re a fast bowler and you look at it, you probably do get excited.” Depending on how long the fourth Australia-India Test lasts, Melbourne Cricket Club chief executive Stuart Fox says a total attendance of more than 250,000 could be possible. Day 1 on Thursday is sold out, with the temperature expected to hit 40C. Page added the forecast heat over the next couple of days would not affect the pitch preparation unduly. “It probably means it might quicken up a bit quicker than what it would if it was 20C,” he said. “Whether we leave a bit more moisture in it, I can’t say yes or no at this stage. “We’ll keep monitoring the weather ... and adjust our preparation accordingly. “We’ve been really happy with the last couple of years, so it’s a rinse-and-repeat job for us.” India have been training at the MCG for a couple of days already and there are murmurs out of their camp about the quality of the net wickets. Page countered that how his team prepared the net wickets was standard ahead of Boxing Day. “Three days out, we prepare Test match pitches. If teams come and train before that, they get what pitches we’ve had. It’s stock-standard procedure for us,” he said. Fox said the MCG would have extra bottles of water available on Thursday and urged fans to look after themselves in the heat. “It’s going to be challenging for everyone,” Fox said of the Day 1 weather. Fox is also excited about what sort of crowd figure the match would generate. “Why couldn’t we have a Test match that is 270,000? There are no limits,” he said. Page was asked how he would feel if the Test did not go into Day 4, as was the case in Adelaide. “If the game only goes for two-and-a-half days, but you see a great game, is that good for the game?” he posed.Germany is to vote in an early election on February 23 after Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s three-party governing coalition collapsed last month in a dispute over how to revitalise the country’s stagnant economy. Mr Musk’s guest opinion piece for Welt am Sonntag – a sister publication of Politico owned by the Axel Springer Group – published in German over the weekend, was the second time this month that he has supported the Alternative for Germany, or AfD. “The Alternative for Germany (AfD) is the last spark of hope for this country,” he wrote in his translated commentary. He went on to say that the far-right party “can lead the country into a future where economic prosperity, cultural integrity and technological innovation are not just wishes, but reality”. The Tesla Motors chief executive also wrote that his investment in Germany gives him the right to comment on the country’s condition. The AfD is polling strongly, but its candidate for the top job, Alice Weidel, has no realistic chance of becoming chancellor because other parties refuse to work with the far-right party. Billionaire Mr Musk, an ally of US President-elect Donald Trump, challenged in his opinion piece the party’s public image. “The portrayal of the AfD as right-wing extremist is clearly false, considering that Alice Weidel, the party’s leader, has a same-sex partner from Sri Lanka! Does that sound like Hitler to you? Please!” Mr Musk’s commentary has led to a debate in German media over the boundaries of free speech, with the paper’s own opinion editor announcing her resignation, pointedly on Mr Musk’s social media platform, X. Eva Marie Kogel wrote: “I always enjoyed leading the opinion section of WELT and WAMS. Today an article by Elon Musk appeared in Welt am Sonntag. I handed in my resignation yesterday after it went to print.” A critical article by the future editor-in-chief of the Welt group, Jan Philipp Burgard, accompanied Mr Musk’s opinion piece. “Musk’s diagnosis is correct, but his therapeutic approach, that only the AfD can save Germany, is fatally wrong,” he wrote. Responding to a request for comment from the German Press Agency, dpa, the current editor-in-chief of the Welt group, Ulf Poschardt, and Mr Burgard – who is due to take over on January 1 – said in a joint statement that the discussion over Mr Musk’s piece was “very insightful. Democracy and journalism thrive on freedom of expression.” “This will continue to determine the compass of the ‘world’ in the future. We will develop ‘Die Welt’ even more decisively as a forum for such debates,” they wrote to dpa.

Bills clinch AFC's No. 2 seed with 40-14 rout of undisciplined JetsThe move could usher in an end to a protracted political crisis in the European Union country following the annulment of a presidential election by a top court. Parliament approved the new administration in a 240-143 vote in Romania’s 466-seat legislature. The new coalition is made up of the leftist Social Democratic Party (PSD) the centre-right National Liberal Party (PNL), the small ethnic Hungarian UDMR party and national minorities. It caps a month-long period of turmoil in which far-right nationalists made significant gains in a parliamentary election on December 1 a week after a first-round presidential race saw the far-right outsider Calin Georgescu emerge as the front-runner. “It will not be an easy mandate for the future government,” Mr Ciolacu, whose PSD party topped the polls in the parliamentary election, said in a statement. “We are aware that we are in the midst of a deep political crisis,” he said. “It is also a crisis of trust, and this coalition aims to regain the trust of citizens, the trust of the people.” Romania’s 16 ministerial positions will be shared among the parties, which will hold a slim majority in the legislature. It is widely seen as a tactical partnership to shut out far-right nationalists whose voices found fertile ground amid high living costs and a sluggish economy. Mr Ciolacu, who came third in the first-round presidential ballot despite polls indicating he would win the most votes, has served as prime minister since June 2023. After parliament’s approval, President Klaus Iohannis swore in the new government and warned the new Cabinet that it is entering a “difficult new period” in which “for many Romanians, there are major concerns”. Romania was plunged into turmoil after Mr Georgescu’s surprise success in the presidential race, after allegations of electoral violations and Russian interference emerged. Days before the December 8 run-off, the Constitutional Court made the unprecedented move to annul the presidential race. “We go through complicated times, but I think we all learned from mistakes of the past,” Mr Ciolacu said. “I hope that together with my colleagues in the coalition, we’ll find the best solutions to get past the challenges we have in front of us.” Mr Ciolacu said that the new government would aim to quickly organise the rerun of the presidential election in which the new coalition has agreed to put forward an agreed common pro-European candidate. Cristian Andrei, a political consultant based in Bucharest, said that the new government made up of the same political parties will likely embrace “soft populist” rhetoric such as economic patriotism, anti-austerity, and a peace solution in neighbouring Ukraine to counter the rise of far-right populism. “This will be a way to answer the concerns of many Romanians who voted for populists... but will not solve the fundamental problem of trust,” he said. “The only decisive factor now will be who and how convincing the pro-European candidates will be against this popular revolt.” George Simion, the leader of the far-right Alliance for the Unity of Romanians, which came second in the parliamentary election, said that all politicians from his party on Monday would vote against the Ciolacu government. In 2021, the PSD and the PNL also formed an unlikely but increasingly strained coalition together with UDMR, which exited the Cabinet last year after a power-sharing dispute.

Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce and his girlfriend Taylor Swift are one of, if not the most high-profile couple in professional sports right now. Anytime the two go anywhere together publicly, it draws a crowd — as does Swift’s solo entrances at Arrowhead Stadium when she shows up to support Kelce when he plays. But just because Kelce and Swift are in the limelight seemingly all the time, it doesn’t mean they’re exempt from some of the team rules the Chiefs have implemented for all of their players leading up to game days. Chariah Gordon, the fiancée of Chiefs receiver Mecole Hardman, recently told People.com that there are eight rules the team has for all of its players to follow, but there are three in particular that apply to Kelce and Swift’s relationship specifically. The first is an 11 p.m. curfew for all players the night before; no exceptions. The NFL CBA states that players can be penalized for curfew violations, which fall under “conduct detrimental to the team.” The second rule is that all significant others, even wives, must stay in separate rooms the night before games. While they are allowed to stay in the same hotel, players have to sleep solo — something Gordon said the team is really strict about. The third rule is that all players must get directly onto the team plane after away games and no significant others are allowed to tag along. Robert Deutsch-Imagn Images “You're more than welcome to go to a game and you can see them after, and then they're getting right back on the flight and they're coming right back home that night,” Jayla Thornton-Cook, wife to Chiefs safety Bryan Cook told People. Swift doesn’t have to worry much about that last one as she’s only attended home games this season due to security concerns at away stadiums due to a couple of incidents over the summer. Swift had to cancel a few of her “Eras Tour” shows in Austria before the season started due to a terrorist plot that she was allegedly the target of. She also had a stalker who was arrested in Germany in July after social media threats were made by him toward her and Kelce. On the last ball of the 119th over of India's first innings, Mohammed Siraj jabbed at a ball outside the off-stump and it went straight to Steve Smith who was stationed in the slip cordon. Smith took the catch and Australia thought they had the wicket. But the third umpire didn't take much time to rule that the ball had bounced after touching the bat, although it seemed pretty close. Cummins, unhappy with the decision, immediately signalled that he wanted to use a DRS on the same but that wasn't possible. The market value of Samsung's affiliates stood at 548.4 trillion won ($371.5 billion) as of Thursday, compared with 709.6 trillion won a year earlier, according to data compiled by Yonhap Infomax, the financial news arm of Yonhap News Agency. Samsung Group has 22 affiliates listed on the local stock market, including Samsung Electronics Co., Samsung Biologics Co., Samsung C&T Corp. and Samsung Life Insurance Co. The overall decrease came as shares of Samsung Electronics tumbled 31.71 per cent this year, with those of Samsung SDI Co. and Hotel Shilla Co. falling 47.66 per cent and 42.58 per cent, respectively. "Shares of Samsung Electronics are expected to trade within a limited range for the time being due to the downcycle of memory chips," said Kim Dong-won, a researcher at KB Securities Co. Meanwhile, Earnings forecast for Samsung Electronics for the fourth quarter have been revised down largely due to a downturn in industry demand. According to the latest survey conducted by Yonhap Infomax, which polled 20 Korean brokerage houses, Samsung Electronics' operating profit for the October-December period is estimated at 8.58 trillion won ($5.92 billion). While the latest forecast is sharply higher than the 2.82 trillion won recorded in the fourth quarter of last year, it represents a drop of over 1 trillion won compared with the previous estimate of 9.77 trillion won made in October and November. Market observers say the deepening slump in demand for traditional IT products, including smartphones and PCs, has contributed to prolonged weak profitability in Samsung's core memory business. The US Commerce Department recently awarded Samsung Electronics up to $4.745 billion in direct funding to support the South Korean tech giant's chipmaking investment in central Texas, as it strives to strengthen domestic semiconductor production. Chuck Woolery , whose game-show hosting career included tenures at Wheel of Fortune and Love Connection , has died at age 83. Mark Young, Woolery’s friend and podcast cohost, shared the news on X on Saturday. “It is with a broken heart that I tell you that my dear brother @chuckwoolery has just passed away,” Young wrote. “Life will not be the same without him. RIP, brother.” Young told TMZ he was at Woolery’s home in Texas when the former TV host reported not feeling well and went to lie down. When Young checked in later, Woolery was having trouble breathing, and despite a 911 call, Woolery died shortly thereafter. Woolery was born on March 16, 1941, in Ashland, Kentucky, to a business owner and a homemaker, according to The Hollywood Reporter . After stints at the University of Kentucky, in the U.S. Navy, and at Morehead State University, Woolery moved to Nashville to start a music career. He and singer Elkin “Bubba” Fowler formed the psychedelic pop duo The Avant-Garde, and their song “Naturally Stoned” peaked at No. 40 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1968. Lorimar Television/ Everett Collection A singing performance on The Merv Griffin Show led Woolery to audition for a new game show, originally titled Shopper’s Bazaar , that Merv Griffin was developing at the time. After some tinkering, Wheel of Fortune debuted on NBC on January 6, 1975. Griffin earned a Daytime Emmy for his Wheel work and hosted the show until 1981, when a salary dispute led producers to replace him with Pat Sajak . Woolery moved on with a job hosting the syndicated dating game show Love Connection from 1983 to 1994, pulling in 4.5 million viewers a day at one point. He also emceed the game show Scrabble from 1984 to 1990, and between the two shows, he was earning $1 million a year by 1986, as People reported at the time. Woolery also hosted the game show Greed on Fox from 1999 to 2000 and Lingo on Game Show Network from 2002 to 2007. In recent years, Woolery stoked controversy with his political views, posting a tweet that sparked antisemitism accusations in 2017 and then claiming in 2020 that “everyone [was] lying” about the coronavirus pandemic , as Newsweek reported. He also argued that minorities didn’t need civil rights, according to the Associated Press . Woolery was married four times, and his ex-wives included actor Jo Ann Pflug. He had eight children and stepchildren, per THR . More Headlines:

There's a reason the AirPods Pro ( 8/10, WIRED Recommends ) dominate these sales events. Well, several reasons, really: They offer clear and detailed sound, good noise canceling, tons of Apple-friendly convenience features, and innovations like transparency mode with automatic noise suppression to help keep your ears safe. That kind of ingenuity keeps these buds at the forefront even years after launch, and Apple's not done yet. The Pro's high-end computing is fertile ground for Apple engineers, including the most recent feature that makes the buds into OTC hearing aids . A comfy and slick design completes the package to make them the best earbuds for iPhone owners, now at their best price ever. Technics EAH-AZ80 earbuds for $188 ($110 off) Maybe you didn't know, but Technics makes startlingly good wireless earbuds. The EAH-AZ80 ( 9/10, WIRED Recommends ) are among the best there is for their comfortable fit, decent noise canceling, good feature set and even better sound. The flashy endcaps hint at their slick, clear, deeply textural sound that can bring instruments to life. Multipoint pairing with three different devices makes these buds uniquely versatile. The AZ80’s noise canceling is good, though it doesn’t match the top models at Bose or Sony. Still, this is a great pair at a good price, particularly for those who prize sound quality and fit above all. Beats Fit Pro for $150 ($50 off) The Beats Fit Pro earbuds ( 9/10, WIRED Recommends ) have soft silicone tips and squishy fins for great stability, not to mention a fit test to make sure they fit properly in your ears. This attention to ergonomics alone makes them a great pair for gym. But the sound is also an enjoyable hi-fi-like experience, with good noise cancellation and reliable microphones. This deal isn't unheard of — this model is often discounted — but it's still a great price on some terrific earbuds. — Brenda Stolyar Beats Studio Buds + for $130 ($40 off) The Studio Buds support spatial audio, and offer both active noise cancellation and transparency mode, as well as 36 hours of battery life. Physical buttons on the exterior of each earbud make the Studio Buds easy to use, and they're both comfortable and stylish — available in ivory, silver, black, and transparent. If you already have the original Studio Buds, these offer better noise cancellation, extended battery life and an upgraded microphone. — Brenda Stolyar Nothing Ear (a) Wireless Earbuds for $69 ($28 off) These cheap earbuds from Nothing ( 8/10, WIRED Recommends ) are probably my favorite cheap headphones right now. They come in a well-designed case and feature cool yellow accents, and they offer basically every feature you can expect from high-end buds in 2024. You get noise canceling, comfortable eartips, and good sound quality overall. These are easily as good as standard AirPods. Soundcore Space A40 Soundcore by Anker Space A40 Earbuds for $45 (save $14) Soundcore’s Space A40 earbuds ( 8/10, WIRED Recommends ) are great pair of buds at hilariously cheap pricing. These earbuds offer solid noise canceling and transparency modes, vibrant sound with impressive stereo separation, and a sleek design that makes them appear far more expensive than they actually are. The fit is comfortable enough for extended listening sessions, and they deliver many features typically found in high-end models, all at a budget-friendly price. The main drawback is the lack of auto-pause sensors, and the touch controls could be more responsive. Despite these minor issues, these earbuds are a great choice, offering excellent value for money. –Ryan Waniata Sony WF-1000XM5 Sony WF-1000XM5 for $228 ($52 off) Sony’s WF-1000XM5 ( 7/10, WIRED Recommends ) are a high-end pair of earbuds that stand among the best noise-canceling headphones you’ll find in such a small form factor. They’re not my favorite for sound quality or noise-canceling, but they strike a good balance of each option while adding tons of features. You’ll get Sony specials like Speak to Chat and auto-pause sensors and multipoint connection. 8 hours of battery life per charge (with noise canceling on) means they'll last a full work day. –Ryan Waniata Best Ultra Open Earbuds Bose Ultra Open Earbuds for $229 ($70 off) Even on sale, they’re pricey for such a limited use case, but damn if the Bose Ultra Open Buds ( 7/10, WIRED Recommeds ) haven’t become my favorite open buds on the market. Their barrel design takes some getting used to, but they roll onto your ears with impressive tenacity, staying put without pinching tight. The sound beams from their snake-like acoustic housings offer the most well-rounded performance I’ve heard in the genre. The sound is always blended with the world around you, but it’s a fantastic trick for working out or hearing folks around you. –Ryan Waniata JBL Reflect Aero JBL Reflect Aero Noise Cancelling Earbuds for $75 ($5 off) The fully tweakable noise canceling inside these awesome workout earbuds makes them great for folks who like to be aware of their surroundings. The easy-to-use touch controls let you effortlessly adjust the amount of outside noise you want to hear at any given time, and they deliver excellent sound and call quality. Soundcore AeroFit Pro Soundcore by Anker AeroFit Pro Open-Ear Headphones for $100 ($70 off) Anker's Soundcore series has consistently provided excellent value, and the Aerofit Pro open headphones are no exception. These workout headphones feature a charging case and a secure wrap-around design to keep them in place during exercise. With 14 hours of battery life and an additional 40 hours from the case, they can go for weeks without needing a recharge. Soundcore AeroFit 2 by Anker, Open-Ear Headphones for $80 ($20 off) Anker recently released the updated AeroFit 2 , which I have been testing. The new generation is just better: The fit is updated to be more comfortable so you don’t need a wire around the back of the neck, the colors are better, and the sound is better. — Adrienne So Soundcore by Anker AeroFit Workout Headphones for $65 ($65 off) That said, the original generation of Aerofit is an even lower price, now that the AeroFit 2 is out. Shokz OpenRun Pro Shokz OpenRun Pro Bone Conduction Headphones for $125 ($55 off) These bone-conduction headphones are the option you’re probably most likely to see in the wild. They use your jaw bones to route sound to your ears, which means you can hear everything around. Many folks prefer them to standard open buds because they claim they can hear more of the world around them. There is also a mini version on sale . JLab Go Air Pop JLab Go Air Pop Wireless Earbuds for $20 ($15 off) Need a cheap pair of earbuds to not think too much about? Look no further than the Go Air Pop, which are utterly usable earbuds that cost less than $20 this prime day. I like keeping a pair in my car or gym bag, for when I forget to bring nicer buds with me and still want music. JLab Epic Air Sport ANC for $60 ($40 off) Not eager to spend more than $100 on a pair of headphones whose main purpose is to stick to your head and get sweaty? The WIRED Gear team's favorite headphones for going running are now on sale, at a kinda.... epic ... price. The battery on these things will last much longer than we could even fathom during testing. The eartips fit securely, a must for any spirited run. — Matthew Korfhage Jabra Elite 4 Active Jabra Elite 4 Wireless Earbuds for $70 ($20 off) Jabra’s Elite 4 Active ( 9/10, WIRED Recommends ) were impressively good when they were released a couple of years ago, and they remain a fantastic option today—especially when on sale. As part of Jabra’s sporty overhaul, they blend serious durability with a comfy fit, smooth and balanced sound, and plenty of ways to personalize the experience in the Jabra app. They even provide a slab of noise canceling, though it’s more of an aid to their noise-isolating fit. They’re dust and water-resistant, meaning you can dunk them or rinse them after a sweaty workout with no ill effects. –Ryan Waniata Jabra Elite 5 Wireless Earbuds for $67 ($83 off) Jabra may be getting out of the earbud game , but the Elite 5 are still solid earbuds that will last for many years in the field. They’re IP55 rated for dust and water resistance, and the hybrid noise cancellation makes them work well on flights or calls. Sound quality is excellent, with bold bass and enough midrange that you can hear every detail in vocals, acoustic guitar, and piano. Jabra Elite 10 Gen 2 Jabra Elite 10 Gen 2 Wireless Earbuds for $200 ($80 off) The Elite 10 gen 2 ( 7/10, WIRED Recommends ) are Jabra's swan song. You’ll get full and balanced sound, upper-crest noise canceling and transparency mode, good battery life, and loads of extras. You can even use the case as a lag-free transmitter from sources like amplifiers or airplane entertainment centers. These are durable earbuds with IP67 dust and waterproofing, and their ergonomic fit makes them comfy enough for long-term wear. –Ryan Waniata Soundpeats Air4 Pro Soundpeats Air4 Pro for $59 ($21 off)–Clip the Coupon Soundpeats makes affordable earbuds with exceptionally good sound. We recently gave their latest pair that uses solid state xMems drivers, the Soundcapsule 3+, a perfect 10/10 . The Air4 Pro ( 7/10, WIRED Recommends ) don't sound perfect, but they offer up clear and balanced sound along with solid noise canceling for a very low asking price. For well below $100, they’re a worthy option. –Ryan Waniata JBL Endurance Peak 3 JBL Endurance Peak 3 Earbuds for $70 ($30 off) JBL’s Endurance Peak 3 earbuds are completely waterproof, so you can wear them through everything from a rainy jog to a late-night hot tub soak without any concerns. With full dust protection and a rugged design, they’re among the most durable earbuds available. While the controls could be improved and they don’t offer noise canceling, they do include a transparency mode, which is essential for staying aware of your surroundings during workouts. 10 hours of battery life is great, too. –Ryan Waniata Denon PerL Denon PerL Adaptive Wireless Earbuds for $99 ($80 off) Denon’s PerL earbuds ( 7/10, WIRED Review ) don’t fit or feel quite like traditional earbuds, but their sound is seriously impressive thanks to the most advanced personalization system I’ve tested in the genre. These earbuds adjust to your hearing profile, resulting in a richer, fuller, and more immersive sound experience across my music library. It may take a little time for the profile to fully calibrate, but once it's set, the audio performance is impressive. While I was initially skeptical about the $200 price tag, at half the cost, they offer incredible value for serious listeners. –Ryan Waniata Over-Ear Deals Looking for something a bit more private? Check out these awesome deals on over-ear headphones. Apple AirPods Max for $399 ($150 off) Apple's flagship headphones are pricey but beloved by many. The lightning version is on sale for below $400. Yes, it's annoying to have to use that proprietary cable, but also gets you a few more years of use out of them since Apple made you buy them all those years!. Bose Quietcomfort Ultra Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones for $329 ($100 off) Bose’s QuietComfort Ultra headphones (9/10, WIRED Recommends ) are the best noise-canceling headphones on the market. With their plush, ergonomic design, these headphones are incredibly comfortable to wear, and their top tier noise cancellation makes them the ideal choice for frequent travelers or anyone seeking absolute peace in their home or office. The sound is a pleasant surprise—it's less aggressive than past Bose flagships, yet still offering superb instrumental separation and a well-balanced mix. The battery life delivers a solid 30 hours per charge, and they include cutting-edge features like 3D audio virtualization with head-tracking, creating a more immersive, speaker-like experience. At over $400, these are a significant splurge, but at this price, they feel like a true bargain. –Ryan Waniata Sony WH-1000XM4 Sony WH-1000XM4 for $198 ($102 off) It’s hard to think of a more stalwart consumer electronics product over the last decade than Sony’s WH-1000XM4 ( 9/10, WIRED Recommends ). Even four years after their release, these headphones remain a benchmark for both new competitors and premium models from top brands. While their noise cancellation isn't the absolute best, it's still impressive, and a range of features—like a multi-band EQ and a touch control that temporarily activates transparency mode for announcements or quick chats—keeps them feeling advanced, even as they age gracefully. The sound is warm and bass-heavy, yet refined, and the durable plastic design is complemented by plush padding for hours of comfort. –Ryan Waniata Sony WH-1000XM5 Wireless Headphones for $298 ($55 off) Sony’s WH-1000XM5 ( 9/10, WIRED Recommends ) take nearly everything we loved about the previous model a step further, offering a mix of fabulous features and excellent noise canceling, comfort, and sound quality. These headphones have it all, including multipoint pairing, auto-pause sensors, intuitive touch controls, and Amazon Alexa support. They're ideal for travel but just as convenient for everyday use at home. While they're slightly less compact than the previous XM4 model, that's really the only drawback in an otherwise flawless design. –Ryan Waniata Soundcore Life Q30 Soundcore Life Q30 Headphones for $52 ($28 off) I took these on a six hour flight and was perfectly pleased with the noise canceling they provide at a fraction of what you’ll pay for the best noise cancelers . While they may not deliver the same level of tranquility as top-tier models like Bose's QuietComfort Ultra, they still do a solid job. The sound is warm and detailed, with plenty of customization options through the app. With 40 hours of battery life per charge, you'll have no worries about needing a power outlet. Build quality is close to premium tier, though the plastic shells are a bit prone to scratches. Fortunately, an included case helps protect them—and at this price, you won’t mind treating them a bit roughly. –Ryan Waniata Beats Studio Pro Beats Studio Pro Headphones for $160 ($90 off) The Beats Studio Pro ( 7/10, WIRED Recommends ) were solid headphones at full price, but after dropping a full $100 to around $250 on average, they've become a lot more appealing. These headphones have become an even better deal, moving closer to the "must-have" category with their engaging sound and impressive ease of use. Features include effective noise canceling, excellent transparency mode, Apple-specific perks like "Hey, Siri" voice commands, and one-touch pairing for both iPhone and Android devices. While their build isn’t as luxurious as premium models from Sony or Bose, they offer outstanding value at a fraction of the price, making them the smarter choice for those on a budget. –Ryan Waniata Koss Porta Pro Koss Porta Pro Classic On-Ear Headphones for $27 ($23 off) These timeless wired headphones have remained stylish since their debut decades ago. Featuring a sleek metal headband paired with molded plastic earcups and vintage-style foam padding, they’re the perfect headphones to complement your CD or cassette player, and they're cheap enough you don't have to worry too much about them when you're out looking cool. Edifier STAX Spirit S5 Headphones for $400 (100 off) I’m a big fan of Stax electrostatic headphones . These Bluetooth headphones aren't the vintage article, but they retain some of the brand's legendary heritage, have solid sound, and offer all the audiophile specs you could want from a modern pair. ( 8/10, WIRED Recommends .) —Martin Cizmar PuroQuiet Kids Headphones Puro Sound Labs PuroQuiet Kids Headphones for $105 ($34 off) ids are especially vulnerable to hearing loss, which is why WIRED staffers who are parents appreciate kids' headphones like these that limit sound output to the OSHA-recommended 85 decibels. Hungary must closely cooperate with Serbia, Bulgaria, and Turkey to find solutions for securing energy supplies despite external pressures, Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjarto emphasized on Friday, in Istanbul. At the ministerial session of the Istanbul Energy Forum, Mr. Szijjarto first explained that energy security is both a national security and sovereignty issue. However, he added that it is also a physical matter, unrelated to politics or ideologies, as political statements and press conferences do not heat homes or power the economy. He emphasized that the composition of the energy mix is solely a national prerogative, and must remain so. Any interference into the composition of a nation's energy mix happens for political or business reasons, – he cautioned. He pointed out that if one side jeopardizes the security of a country's energy supplies - either through sanctions or by obstructing deliveries - it is considered an attack on that country's sovereignty. Therefore, we reject all such initiatives, and we find it extremely outrageous when they come without any prior notice, – he said. Mr. Szijjarto also recalled that the outgoing U.S. administration had placed Russia's Gazprombank on its sanctions' list the previous day, which could present challenges for some central European and south-east European countries. This is why we, the countries of this region, must cooperate closely, and we will work together to find a solution for securing our energy supplies under the new circumstances, independent of all external pressure and attacks, – he declared. FM Szijjarto praised Serbia, Bulgaria, and Turkey for acting as reliable transit states. Together, we will find a way to ensure the energy security of our countries in the future, and to protect ourselves from attacks on our energy sovereignty, – he underlined. “We are not willing to replace our reliable partners, especially when there are no better offers,” he added. After just 30 seconds, midfielder Gregore, one of Botafogo's best players, hit the head of Fausto Vera with his foot and was given a straight red card. Brazil was assured of a sixth consecutive Copa Libertadores title and the 24th in history, just one less than Argentina. It was also the third straight title for Rio de Janeiro clubs, after Fluminense in 2023 and Flamengo in 2022. Winger Luiz Henrique scored the first in the 35th minute from close range, and was fouled for the penalty shot converted by Alex Telles in the 44th. ‘Maharashtra has broken all records’: PM Modi hails BJP-led Mahayuti's thumping victory, says lies, deceit badly lostJust five months after the general election, in which the INDIA bloc won 30 of the 48 seats in Maharashtra and contributed to the BJP’s reduced tally in the Lok Sabha, the Assembly election results announced on Saturday (November 23, 2024) has thrown the alliance into an existential crisis. The views within the bloc ranged from anger against the Congress, which is the largest constituent, to dismissing it as an electoral grouping that has outlived its utility. The doubts over a collection of ideologically heterogeneous and politically divergent parties, voiced by many even at the time of its birth in March 2023, have only grown stronger after two consecutive setbacks in Haryana and Maharashtra. The INDIA bloc has not had a meeting since the Lok Sabha results and its leaders haven’t appeared on a common platform. A Left leader pointed out that the group was primarily an electoral platform to avoid division of anti-BJP votes. It was largely successful to this end in the general election. Another Opposition leader from Samajwadi Party noted that the group’s biggest achievement had been that its name always had “a recall”. “The bloc has no joint programmes, has not evolved a joint strategy or a common agenda. It is not tied together in any way other than seat negotiations before elections,” he said. While giving credit to the INDIA bloc for its successful run in Jharkhand, senior RJD leader and Rajya Sabha MP Manoj K. Jha underlined that a coalition collective has a different religion and that should be adhered to. “The Lok Sabha results carried a message for both us and the BJP, it seems we didn’t even read the message,” he said. He urged the INDIA bloc constituents to have regular meetings. There is also anger against the Congress for disproportionately dictating the agenda of the alliance, especially issues such as “caste census” regardless of whether it resonated with the electorate. Communist Party of India (Marxist) Polit Bureau and Central Committee coordinator Prakash Karat said that the focus had changed in Maharashtra since the Lok Sabha election, which did not reflect in the Opposition’s campaign. CPI general secretary D. Raja said that allies in the INDIA bloc must have mutual trust and serious introspection is needed at this juncture. He also urged the Congress to be more accommodative. The Trinamool Congress, which has always stood at a distance from the bloc, once again reiterated its stand. “ Trinamool convincingly won all six Assembly seats in West Bengal where byelections were held. Other than the BJP, we were also facing two of the INDIA bloc parties, Congress and CPI(M), which put up candidates in every seat. We do not have an electoral alliance with any party in the bloc, so this is not a question we need to answer”, Derek O’Brien, Trinamool leader in the Rajya Sabha said. US President Trump nominates former Florida AG Pam Bondi to lead DOJBrock Purdy and Nick Bosa are not available for the San Francisco 49ers when they enter Green Bay with designs on finding their finishing kick on Sunday afternoon. Purdy is out with a right shoulder injury and won't leave the sideline at Lambeau Field, head coach Kyle Shanahan said Friday, when he also declared Bosa out and confirmed journeyman Brandon Allen would make his 10th career start at quarterback. "Outside of here people haven't seen a lot of Brandon. But it's his second year (with the 49ers)," Shanahan said. "Obviously guys want Brock up, but guys are excited to see Brandon play." Shanahan said the 49ers are "a little surprised" Purdy experienced tightness and discomfort in his shoulder after an MRI exam on Monday that showed no long-term cause for concern. "The way it responded this week, it's really up in the air for next week," Shanahan said of Purdy's long-term prognosis. Allen's last NFL start on the road was with the Bengals at the Ravens in 2020. Allen completed 6 of 21 passes for 48 yards with two interceptions. He finished with a passer rating of 0.0 in a 38--3 loss. "It's definitely an opportunity for me to go out and play well and put our guys in a good position to win the game," Allen said Friday. "And obviously we want Brock back and healthy and all that, but for time being, it is an opportunity for me." Purdy took the practice field Thursday with the intent to participate. His shoulder tightened significantly, and the 49ers ushered him off the field to meet with trainers. Purdy beat the Packers in the NFC divisional playoffs at San Francisco in January, but Allen is familiar to Packers head coach Matt LaFleur. LaFleur was an assistant coach with the Rams during Allen's two-year run in Los Angeles. Allen broke into the NFL in 2016 with the Jaguars and is 2-7 in nine career starts. He went 1-2 with the Broncos in 2019 and 1-5 in six starts over two years with the Bengals in 2020 and ‘21. A victory against the visiting 49ers on Sunday would bolster the Packers' playoff chances, send a conference rival below .500 and avenge a bitter playoff defeat. Those seemingly rank in no particular order for the Packers (8-3), although they don't shy from living at least partially in the past ahead of a Week 12 showdown. San Francisco eliminated Green Bay 24-21 in the NFC divisional playoffs last season, scoring 10 unanswered points in the fourth quarter. "That's what you've got to sit with all offseason, is going back, watching the game, trying to see what you could have done better," Packers quarterback Jordan Love said. "What you could have done differently in that game. ... Just knowing that's the team that knocked us out, we're definitely hungry for this game." Ditto for San Francisco. The 49ers fell to 5-5 after last week's 20-17 home loss to Seattle, done in by Geno Smith's 13-yard touchdown run with 12 seconds to play. Still only a game behind NFC West-leading Arizona, the reigning conference champion 49ers are just 1-3 in division play and can ill afford to lose more ground. A visit to AFC East leader Buffalo awaits after the trip to Green Bay. While they're dealing with plenty of not-so-good news on the injury front, the 49ers do anticipate the return of other contributors. Cornerback Charvarius Ward, who missed the past two games following the death of his 1-year-old daughter, practiced Wednesday. Tight end George Kittle also is eager to play after a nagging hamstring injury sidelined him against the Seahawks. "Very excited," Kittle said. "Can't pass up playing the Packers, so no, I will be out there for sure." Allen was a three-year starter at Arkansas but has been a journeyman backup since entering the NFL in 2016 as the 201st overall pick of the Jaguars. Shanahan and LaFleur have been fierce competitors since twice working together, first as low-level assistants with the Texans in 2008, then on the so-called "dream team" staff in Washington that also included Sean McVay, Mike McDaniel and Raheem Morris; and two seasons with the Falcons (2015, 2016) where LaFleur was quarterbacks coach and Shanahan called the plays. Shanahan scored the most recent win over LaFleur in January. Green Bay has won seven of the past eight regular-season meetings between the franchises. But the familiarity and shared-brain approach to offense that has the coaches completed each other's play calls has led to some tight games. The past three at Lambeau Field were all decided by three points. Green Bay, which hosts a home game on Thanksgiving next Thursday, is starting a run of three games in 12 days. They'll play back-to-back Thursday games. Their Week 14 game is at Detroit. That might make it good news for LaFleur that surprising contributors have emerged of late. Packers wideout Christian Watson had a career-best 150 receiving yards on only four catches during last week's 20-19 road win against the Chicago Bears. His diving 60-yard reception in the fourth quarter put the Packers in position for Love's go-ahead, 1-yard scoring run with 2:59 to play. Watson entered the game with eight catches for 83 yards over his previous three contests, but LaFleur assured Watson remains a "big part" of the attack. "He's a guy who's got every measurable known to man in terms of the size, the speed, and it's not like those were easy plays he was making," LaFleur said. "He was making tough, contested catches." San Francisco will aim to generate more pressure against Love than the Bears, who sacked him just once. The 49ers collected four sacks against the Seahawks, with Bosa and Leonard Floyd contributing 1.5 apiece. Recent regular-season history between the Packers and 49ers at Lambeau Field has favored Green Bay. The Packers have won seven of their past eight home games against the 49ers and are 22-11 versus San Francisco at home all-time. Green Bay leads the series 34-28-1. --Field Level Mediaqatar fiba

Yet another billionaire is clambering to get into President-elect Donald Trump’s hyper-rich inner circle, the MAGA chief has claimed. Trump, who will take the hot seat on Jan. 20, 2025, has seen his popularity surge among Silicon Valley types after he was endorsed by the world’s richest man, Elon Musk . The number two, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos , soon made a beeline for the big man too, after he was spotted dining with Musk and Trump at Mar-a-Lago earlier this month. Now Bill Gates wants a slice, according to Trump. Writing on Truth Social, Trump said the former CEO of Microsoft— whom Forbes says is the 16th richest in the world— personally asked for an audience with him. In a somewhat incoherent post, he said: “Where are you? When are you coming to the ‘Center of the Universe,’ Mar-a-Lago. Bill Gates asked to come, tonight. We miss you and x! New Year’s Eve is going to be AMAZING!!! DJT.” The murder of health insurance CEO Brian Thompson is being blamed not just on the gunman–but on the industry the dead man worked for, a new poll has found. UnitedHealthcare CEO Thompson was gunned down from behind on a Manhattan street just before dawn on December 4, prompting a nationwide manhunt which ended five days later with the arrest of the suspected killer , 26-year-old Ivy League graduate Luigi Mangione . Now research by NORC at the University of Chicago published Friday shows that while 78 per cent of people said that the alleged killer, had a great deal or a moderate amount of responsibility for the death, almost as many blamed health insurance companies' denial of coverage for the death. And almost as many, 67 per cent, said profits by the insurers were to blame. A majority of people, 53 per cent, blamed “wealth or income inequality in general”–although it was Mangione who was the scion of a millionaire family , while Thompson was from rural Iowa and had been the first in his family to go to college. One in ten said that Thompson’s killer bore no responsibility at all–an issue which is likely to dog jury selection when Mangione goes on trial in Manhattan for the alleged murder. He is charged by both federal and state authorities with murder and in the federal case is eligible for the death penalty . Mangione has pleaded not guilty. Tom Cruise ’s first movie project after wrapping up the Mission: Impossible franchise next year with The Final Reckoning has been revealed. And it could land him back in the Oscar conversation. Warner Bros. announced Friday that Cruise will star in an untitled film from two-time Academy Award-winning director Alejandro G. Iñárritu ( Birdman , The Revenant ), set to be released on Oct. 2, 2026. The logline reads: “The most powerful man in the world embarks on a frantic mission to prove he is humanity’s savior before the disaster he’s unleashed destroys everything.” Sandra Hüller, John Goodman, Michael Stuhlbarg, Jesse Plemons, Sophie Wilde, and Riz Ahmed are among the other actors in the cast. The project is Iñárritu‘s first English-language film since 2015’s The Revenant , which won Leonardo DiCaprio his first Oscar for Best Actor. Cruise has been nominated for three acting Oscars over the course of his long career—for Born on the Fourth of July , Jerry Maguire , and Magnolia —but has never received a trophy at the ceremony. Entire stalls were engulfed by flames at the Bryant Park holiday market in Manhattan on Friday morning, videos show. A cause for the blaze is yet to be determined, but a spokesperson for FDNY told Gothamist it’s under investigation. The fire broke out around 9:30 a.m. and nobody was injured, the spokesperson said, adding that the fire was between “six feet wide by 40 feet long” at its peak. Clips of the flames quickly went viral on social media and the market has been closed indefinitely. New York City Emergency Management advised people to avoid the area and warned there will be traffic delays while a probe is completed. It’s the second time this season a holiday market has gone up in flames in the city, coming a week-and-a-half after a fire ignited a swath of Herald Square’s festive shopping corridor. Eighteen shops—and their merchandise, ranging from shirts to glass ornaments—were reportedly razed by that blaze. Kevin O’Leary , of Shark Tank fame, says half of Canada is “interested” in merging with the U.S.—a longshot arrangement that topped Donald Trump ’s wishlist this Christmas. “Canadians over the holidays—the last two days—have been talking about this,” O’Leary told Fox Business. “They want to hear more.” The 70-year-old Montreal native said he’s headed to Mar-a-Lago to start a conversation that, at the least, may lead to his homeland and the U.S. striking a partnership agreement akin to the European Union. “So secure [the northern territories], give a common currency, figure out taxes across the board, get everything trading both ways, create a new, almost EU-like passport—I like this idea and at least half of Canadians are interested,” he said. O’Leary acknowledged there’d be “a lot of issues” with a merger, but suggested now’s the time to get a deal done with Trump returning to office as Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s power is waning. O’Leary may not be the best barometer for what the average Canadian thinks, however. The businessman, worth an estimated $400 million , has ditched the great white north for sunny Miami Beach . He was also soundly rejected by voters when he ran for the leadership of the Canadian Conservative Party in 2017 and won just one percent of the vote. Elon Musk has further stoked the flames of the MAGA H1-B civil war after he agreed with a post that called Americans too “retarded” to exclusively fill the U.S. tech workforce. The eye-popping endorsement came after a pro-Musk account on X summed up the right-wing divide on visas to skilled workers as such: “So basically the right split into two factions, tech right and right right, and the tech right is like ‘hey we need h-1b visa people to do the jobs,’ and the right right was like ‘no you need to hire Americans,’ and the tech right is like “but you guys are retarded,” and the right right is like ‘well you don’t train us,’ and the tech right is like ‘you can’t outtrain being retarded,’ and while all this was going on we learned some people *really* don’t like Indians.” Musk, a 53-year-old South African who’s recently enjoyed a spot inside the “America First” Trump’s inner circle, apparently thought that assessment was a fair one. He responded, “That pretty much sums it up. This was eye-opening.” Trump is yet to weigh in on the latest right-wing divide that pits his longtime loyalists against his new tech bro faction. That pretty much sums it up. This was eye-opening. Several aviation experts said they believe that a Russian defense system caused the Azerbaijan Airlines plane crash that killed 38 people on Christmas Day, according to the Associated Press. The flight was headed from Baku, Azerbaijan, to Grozny, Russia, but diverted course amid bad weather before crash landing near Aktau, Kazakhstan. The incident left 29 survivors, all of whom are injured, the AP reported. With investigations underway in Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, and Russia, officials in those countries have urged against speculation about the crash’s cause. Russia’s aviation authority has suggested, nevertheless, that a bird strike could have played a role. But aviation experts seem to disagree. Mark Zee, founder of the aviation safety organization OPSGroup, told the AP that based on images of the plane, he is “90-99%” sure it was struck by a missile. Independent Russian military expert Yan Matveyev agreed that the plane’s tail appeared to have been struck by shrapnel from a missile like the ones used by Russia’s defense system. Meanwhile, the UK aviation security firm Osprey Solutions reportedly cautioned its clients that “Azerbaijan Airlines flight was likely shot down by a Russian military air-defense system.” The man suspected of lighting a woman on fire in a Brooklyn subway car faces life without parole after he was charged with murder . Sebastian Zapeta-Calil, 33, has been indicted on charges of murder in the first and second degree and arson, according to Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez. The horrific scene unfolded on an early morning F train stopped at the Coney Island-Stillwell Ave. stop in south Brooklyn on Dec. 22. Zapeta is accused of igniting the woman’s clothes and “fanning the flames” with a shirt. “These are significant counts. Murder in the first degree carries the possibility of life without parole. It’s the most serious statute in New York state law and my office is very confident about the evidence in the case and to hold Zapeta accountable for his dastardly deeds,” Gonzalez said. Zapeta, an undocumented immigrant from Guatemala, is scheduled to be arraigned Jan. 7. Scouted selects products independently. Acting president, formerly the Prime Minister, Han Duck-soo, was brought in two weeks after parliament voted to impeach President Yoon Suk Yeol after his failed bid to impose martial law on the country. But Han was accused Friday of dragging his heels in pushing through the Yoon impeachment after he refused to appoint three judges to fill vacancies in the Constitutional Court that would vote on Yoon’s future. As a result, 192 lawmakers voted for Han’s impeachment. However, it was the decision to lower the threshold of required votes from 200 for Yoon’s removal to just 151 that caused lawmakers from the ruling People Power Party to swarm National Assembly speaker Woo Won-shik. “Invalid!” and “Abuse of power!” were among the angry chants. The majority of the parliament in South Korea is from the opposition Democratic Party. Yoon is from the right-wing People Power Party, while Han is an independent. Deputy Prime Minister Choi Sang-mok has taken the reigns... for now. South Korea's parliament voted to impeach acting president Han Duck-soo, prompting chaos as ruling party lawmakers protested the speaker’s decision to allow only 150 votes to pass the bill against Han, which meant no ruling party lawmakers’ votes were needed. pic.twitter.com/BgX9D8vrwh The 92-year-old mother of a murder victim whose death spurred the conviction—later overturned—of a member of the Kennedy family, died Tuesday of complications from the flu, her son said. Dorthy Moxley fought nearly 50 years for justice after her teenage daughter, Martha, was found dead across the street from the family home of Michael Skakel, a cousin of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Skakel was convicted of Martha’s murder in 2002 and freed in 2013 after a judge said he hadn’t received adequate representation. The Connecticut Supreme Court reinstated the conviction in 2016, only to order him freed two years later. A second trial never occurred, in part because some witnesses had died. “It was just incredible how much support we got from people that we knew and people that we didn’t know,” Moxley’s son, John, told the Associated Press . “My mother was always grateful and chose to focus on the communal spirit, if you will, rather than the law. My mother always said she believed in angels and the angels really came out to support her, to support us.” John added: “She was able to take that spirit of support and knowing how important it was to share that with others. And that gave her a lot of joy, knowing that she could help somebody else.”

Both Nice and Le Havre will look to bounce back from disappointing results last weekend when they meet at the Allianz Riviera in Ligue 1 on Saturday. Nice had their top-four hopes dented slightly with a heavy defeat on the road, while Le Havre plummeted into the drop zone by losing a relegation six-pointer on home soil. Franck Haise 's men have struggled from a lack of consistency this season, and they will need to bounce back from a chastening 4-1 defeat away to an Alexandre Lacazette -inspired Lyon. That saw OL leapfrog Nice into fifth, and Haise's side also missed the opportunity to break into the top four, with Lille surprisingly dropping points last weekend. While sitting in sixth, it is something of a surprise, considering Nice have only won five of their 18 matches in all competitions this season, their worst win rate at this stage of a season in 15 years. Much of that is down to some poor form in Europe, but also because Haise's style of play has almost completely eradicated the defensive stability they enjoyed under Francesco Farioli last season. Nice have already conceded 13 goals in their nine home games this season, more than the amount they conceded at the Allianz Riviera in 18 games last season. To make up for that, they have improved in attack, because simply scoring one goal here will see them equal their tally for goals on home soil from the entirety of last season (21). Le Havre have also proven to be favourable opponents recently, so this will be a fixture they target for three points, considering they are unbeaten in four at home to their upcoming opponents - winning three. Prior to this current winless run away to Nice, Le Havre did have a run of six wins in seven here, and they will need to tap into that if they are to move out of the relegation zone this weekend. Le Havre were the club that finished just one place above the bottom three last season, and it appears they will be in the relegation fight once again this season. Didier Digard 's men have lost nine league games already this season, including eight of the last 10, with the most recent being a disappointing home defeat to relegation rivals Angers. As well as that loss a week ago, Digard has seen his side suffer many poor results at home, losing heavily to Lyon, Lille and Reims. Therefore, being on the road could be a blessing in disguise, considering they won on their last away trip at Nantes, and have only conceded eight goals in six games so far. That will be required if they want to move out of the relegation playoff spot, as Angers sent them into the bottom three courtesy of that result last weekend. Anything here will be a bonus though for the league's lowest scorers, because the clash with Strasbourg next weekend will be huge, with both clubs separated by just one point at present. Nice are currently suffering from numerous injury setbacks, with as many as eight first-team players currently sidelined. Dante will miss an extended period with a knee injury, while full-backs Melvin Bard and Jonathan Clauss are also nursing issues of their own picked up recently. Hamstring issues will keep Ali Abdi and Youssouf Ndayishimiye out of this one, and midfielder Morgan Sanson is yet to overcome an ankle problem, joining lively attacker Jeremie Boga on the sidelines. The issues have also mounted up for Le Havre, with Oussama Targhalline (thigh) joining Yann Kitala (ankle), Oualid El Hajjam (calf), Arouna Sangante (groin) and Andy Logbo on the treatment table at present. Andre Ayew should feature though, and will look to add to his good career tally against Nice, having scored in five of his previous 10 encounters against the South Coast club. Nice possible starting lineup: Bulka; Rosario, Bombito, Abdelmonem; Louchet, Ndombele, Boudaoui, Nandjou; Cho, Guessand, Diop Le Havre possible starting lineup: Desmas; Pembele, Youtube Kinkoue, Lloris; Casimir, Toure, Kuzyaev, Operi; Sabbi, Ayew, Soumare Nice were thrashed at Lyon last weekend, but still showed more than enough in attack to suggest that they will have too much for a struggling Le Havre side that start the weekend in the bottom three. Only one other club in Europe's top-five leagues are yet to draw a game at all this season, and that is unlikely to change this weekend for Le Havre, as they are staring down the barrel at a 10th league defeat in 14 matches. Wray said at a town hall meeting that he would be stepping down “after weeks of careful thought,” roughly three years short of the completion of a 10-year term during which he tried to keep the FBI out of politics even as the bureau found itself entangled in a string of explosive investigations, including two that led to separate indictments of Trump last year as well as inquiries into Biden and his son. “My goal is to keep the focus on our mission — the indispensable work you’re doing on behalf of the American people every day,” Wray told agency employees. “In my view, this is the best way to avoid dragging the bureau deeper into the fray, while reinforcing the values and principles that are so important to how we do our work.” The intended resignation was not unexpected considering that Trump had settled on Patel to be director and had repeatedly aired his ire at Wray, whom he appointed during his first term. But his departure is nonetheless a reflection of how Trump's norm-breaking style has reshaped Washington, with the president-elect yet again flouting tradition by moving to replace an FBI director well before his term was up and Wray resigning to avert a collision with the incoming administration. “It should go without saying, but I’ll say it anyway — this is not easy for me," Wray said. “I love this place, I love our mission, and I love our people — but my focus is, and always has been, on us and doing what’s right for the FBI.” Wray received a standing ovation following his remarks before a standing-room-only crowd at FBI headquarters and some in the audience cried, according to an FBI official who was not authorized to discuss the private gathering by name and spoke on condition of anonymity to The Associated Press. Trump applauded the news on social media, calling it “a great day for America as it will end the Weaponization of what has become known as the United States Department of Injustice" and saying that Patel's confirmation will begin “the process of Making the FBI Great Again.” If confirmed by the Senate, Patel would herald a radical leadership transformation at the nation's premier federal law enforcement agency. He has advocated shutting down the FBI's Washington headquarters and called for ridding the federal government of “conspirators," raising alarms that he might seek to wield the FBI's significant investigative powers as an instrument of retribution against Trump's perceived enemies. Patel said in a statement Wednesday that he was looking forward to "a smooth transition. I will be ready to serve the American people on day one.” It's extremely rare for FBI directors to be ousted from their jobs before the completion of their 10-year terms, a length meant to insulate the agency from the political influence of changing administrations. But Trump has done it twice, placing Wray in the job in 2017 after firing Director James Comey amid an investigation into ties between Russia and the Republican president’s campaign. Despite having appointed Wray, Trump had telegraphed his anger with the FBI director on multiple occasions throughout the years, including as recently as the past week. In an interview with NBC’s “Meet the Press” that aired Sunday, Trump said, “I can’t say I’m thrilled with him. He invaded my home,” a reference to the FBI search of his Florida property , Mar-a-Lago, two years ago for classified documents from Trump’s first term as president. That search, and the recovery of boxes of sensitive government records, paved the way for one of two federal indictments against Trump. The case, and another one charging him with plotting to overturn the 2020 election, have both been dismissed by the Justice Department special counsel that brought them in light of Trump's November victory. Attorney General Merrick Garland praised Wray for having “served our country honorably and with integrity for decades.” He said: “Under Director Wray’s principled leadership, the FBI has worked to fulfill the Justice Department’s mission to keep our country safe, protect civil rights, and uphold the rule of law.” Natalie Bara, the president of the FBI Agents Association, said in a statement that Wray had led the FBI “through challenging times with a steady focus on doing the work that keeps our country safe. ” Throughout his seven years on the job, the self-professed "low-key, understated" Wray brought a workmanlike approach to the job, repeatedly preaching a “keep calm and tackle hard” mantra to bureau personnel despite a steady drumbeat of attacks from Trump and his supporters. He also sought to avoid public conflict when possible with the Trump White House, distancing himself and his leadership team from the FBI's Russia investigation over errors that took place before he took office and announcing dozens of corrective actions meant to prevent the recurrence of the surveillance abuses that plagued the inquiry. But there were other instances when he memorably broke from Trump — he did not agree, for instance, with Trump’s characterization of the Russia investigation as a “witch hunt." He made known his displeasure when the White House blessed the declassification of materials related to the surveillance of a former Trump campaign aide and contradicted a Trump talking point by stating that Ukraine had not interfered in the 2016 election. He repeatedly sought to keep the focus on the FBI's day-to-day work, using the bulk of his resignation announcement to praise the bureau's efforts in countering everything from violent crime and cyberattacks to Chinese espionage and terrorism. Yet as he leaves office at a time of heightened threats , much of the public focus has been on the politically sensitive investigations of his tenure. Besides the inquiries into Trump, the FBI in recent years also investigated Biden's handling of classified information as well as Biden's son Hunter for tax and gun violations. Hunter Biden was pardoned by his father last week. A particular flashpoint came in August 2022, when FBI agents searched Mar-a-Lago — an action officials defended as necessary given the boxes of documents that were being concealed at the Palm Beach property and the evidence of obstruction that the Justice Department said had been gathered. Trump railed against the FBI over that search and has kept up his criticism ever since. Trump was angered by Wray's comment at a congressional hearing that there was “some question about whether or not it’s a bullet or shrapnel” that struck Trump's ear during an assassination attempt in Pennsylvania in July. The FBI later stated unequivocally that it was indeed a bullet. Before being named FBI director, Wray worked at a prestigious law firm, King & Spalding, where he represented former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie during the “Bridgegate” scandal. He also led the Justice Department’s criminal division for a period during President George W. Bush’s administration.

WASHINGTON — Most Americans believe health insurance profits and coverage denials share responsibility for the killing of UnitedHealthcare’s CEO — although not as much as the person who pulled the trigger, according to a new poll. In the representative survey of 1,001 adults by NORC at the University of Chicago , about 8 in 10 said the person who committed the killing has “a great deal” or “a moderate amount” of responsibility for the Dec. 4 shooting of Brian Thompson. Still, some have cast Luigi Mangione, the 26-year-old suspect charged with Thompson’s murder, as a heroic figure. His arrest was followed by an outpouring of grievances about insurance companies. Police say the words “delay,” “deny” and “depose” were scrawled on the ammunition investigators found at the scene, echoing a phrase commonly used to describe insurer tactics to avoid paying claims. UnitedHealthcare has said Mangione was not a client. About 7 in 10 adults say that denials for healthcare coverage by insurance companies, or the profits made by health insurance companies, also bear at least “a moderate amount” of responsibility for Thompson’s death. Younger Americans are particularly likely to see the murder as the result of a confluence of forces rather than just one person’s action. Americans see a wide range of factors contributing to UHC CEO’s killing The poll found that the story of the slaying is being followed widely. About 7 in 10 said they had heard or read “a lot” or “some” about Thompson’s death. Multiple factors were seen as responsible. About half in the poll believe that at least “a moderate amount” of blame is rooted in wealth or income inequality, although they did not think other factors like political divisions in the U.S. held the same level of responsibility. Patients and doctors often complain about coverage denials and other complications interfering with care, especially for serious illnesses such as cancer and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS. Insurance industry critics frequently point to company profits in questioning whether the interests of patients are their top focus. UnitedHealthcare made more than $16 billion in profit last year, before interest and taxes, on $281 billion in revenue. Insurers frequently note that most of the revenue they bring in goes back out the door to pay for care. UnitedHealthcare said this month that it pays about 90% of medical claims when they are submitted. The insurer has not provided details about how many claims that involves. For young people, blame is spread equally between insurers and the killer Americans under 30 are especially likely to think a mix of factors is to blame for Thompson’s death. They say that insurance company denials and profits are about as responsible as Thompson’s killer for his death. About 7 in 10 U.S. adults between 18 and 29 say “a great deal” or “a moderate amount” of responsibility falls on profits made by health insurance companies, denials for healthcare coverage by health insurance companies or the person who committed the killing. Young people are also the least likely age group to say “a great deal” of responsibility falls on the person who committed the killing. Only about 4 in 10 say that, compared with about 6 in 10 between 30 and 59. Roughly 8 in 10 adults over 60 say that person deserves “a great deal” of responsibility. About two-thirds of young people place at least a moderate level of blame on wealth or income inequality, in general. People under 30 are more likely to place blame on the media, with 54% saying that compared with about one-third of older adults. About 3 in 10 struggled with coverage from health insurance in the last year Frustrations with health insurers, coverage and the complicated U.S. healthcare system have been simmering for years among patients. About 3 in 10 Americans say they have had a problem getting coverage from their health insurer in the last year, whether those involved problems finding a suitable provider in-network, a claim getting denied or issues getting prior authorization or insurer approval before care happens. These struggles are more prevalent among Americans under 60. UnitedHealthcare says prior authorizations help eliminate waste in the system and let people know whether care will be covered before it is delivered. It says less than 2% of the insurer’s customers experience a denial of care from prior authorizations annually. Roughly 3 in 10 in the poll say immediate family or close friends have experienced problems getting coverage from their health insurer in the last year. Americans under 30 are among the most likely to say they don’t have health insurance. Most Americans get health coverage through their job or by purchasing individual policies. Separate, government-funded programs provide coverage for people with low incomes or those who are age 65 and over or have severe illnesses or disabilities. HOUSEHOLDS face paying higher energy bills before they drop in price in the drive for clean energy, Ed Miliband has hinted. The Energy Secretary says consumers will see costs eventually fall but didn’t rule out costs rising in the short-term in the push to decarbonise the grid by 2030. 2 A predicted rise in 2025 is set to mark the third consecutive hike for energy costs Credit: Alamy But the Tories say the “rush” to wean the electricity system off fossil fuels by the end of the decade will cause more hardship for Brits. Proposals show the government and private firms will spend £40 billion each year as part of the eco move with a pledge to bring down bills by up to £300 in five years. He said: “I can’t guarantee what’s going to happen to bills next month, because we’re in the grip of the international fossil fuel markets.” The Cabinet Minister also said he will be able to bypass any local opposition to build onshore wind farms - with decisions previously left to councils. ( MENAFN - The Conversation) The Australian Human Rights Commission this week launched the National Anti-racism Framework . It's an important moment. For the first time, the country has a comprehensive approach to tackle, if not eliminate, racism in all sectors of society and across different levels of government. The ten-year road map includes 63 recommendations acknowledging the ongoing impact of colonialism on First Nations people and the persistent racism that minority communities experience . The goal of ending racism is highly ambitious, yet necessary. Here's how the plan wants to do it. This framework is a major policy document that will complement and strengthen the Racial Discrimination Act . To date, Australia has not had a national approach to addressing racism. This is despite the numerous calls from many communities that have endured its damaging effects every day. This framework promises to deal with this historical legacy of racism against Indigenous people, as well as its contemporary manifestations . Anti-racism underpins the new approach. This means it aspires to more than simply“not being racist”. Rather, anti-racism involves identifying, challenging and dismantling racism at the individual, structural and institutional levels. It outlines plans from a whole-of-society approach rooted in human rights. Indeed, one of its key recommendations is a national human rights act to lay the legislative foundations for such interventions. Read more: An inquiry has recommended Australia legislate a Human Rights Act. Here's why we need one The document identifies seven priority areas, including: This acknowledges the widespread nature of racism. The framework recommends legal reforms to include minimum requirements to counter racial discrimination. This includes embedding First Nations cultural safety across sectors. It also includes recommendations for the education system to implement cultural safety and anti-racism reforms, and for workplaces to develop and implement various internal anti-racism strategies. One such suggestion is mandatory cultural safety and anti-racism training for all workers, including parliamentarians. The plan involves strategies for recruiting and retaining staff from First Nations and other minority communities in leadership and senior roles. It also calls for media organisations to adopt guidelines based on an anti-racist approach to reporting. To lead by example, parliamentarians and staff should adhere to a zero-tolerance approach to racism. The framework recommends that the government establish a National Anti-racism Taskforce to develop separate implementation plans. One of these would focus on First Nations people; the other on the general population. Race Discrimination Commissioner Giridharan Sivaraman says the national plan must be centred on First Nations people, because“there can be no racial justice in this country without racial justice for First Nations peoples”. It therefore emphasises the importance of truth-telling and self-determination as crucial features of meaningful anti-racism action. This includes incorporating the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples into Australian laws. The anti-racism framework comes at a time of intensifying hate speech and exclusionary nationalism. For the past few years, nations have faced increasing political division and social fissures . Disinformation, misinformation and identity politics are all fanning the flames of racism across Australia, from schools to public events. The Diversity Council Australia reports that 59% of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have experienced racial discrimination in workplaces. In addition, the 2024 Scanlon Foundation Mapping Social Cohesion survey reveals that 17% of Australian adults reported experiencing discrimination based on skin colour, ethnic origin or religion over the past year. This figure is notably higher among overseas-born Australians from non-English-speaking backgrounds, with one in three (34%) reporting similar experiences. What compounds these recent forms of social division and political polarisation is the amplification of racism in key institutions. Since its founding, Australia has grappled with systemic racism in its institutions and structures . Systemic racism leads to poor outcomes for those affected. The poor quality of life standards for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities is an example of this. The over-representation of African-Australian youth in the justice system is another. Yet acknowledging and confronting the painful colonial history and its enduring legacy continues to be a significant challenge. The evidence from various studies, including our own research, shows systemic racism in Australia is mounting . The urgency of a coordinated approach across the whole of society has never been clearer. Racism cannot be addressed by few individuals, one community, agency, or government body. An adequately funded, resourced and coordinated anti-racism approach is necessary. In its calls for reform in key systems and structures, the framework acknowledges this. If fully implemented, these recommendations have the potential to drive transformative change in Australia. Policies and programs affecting First Nations communities would become better coordinated and integrated. With robust monitoring and evaluation, anti-racism initiatives would be more effective at tackling deeply entrenched racism. Achieving a racism-free society will require sustained political will, meaningful action and a commitment to dismantling the structures that perpetuate inequality. This means the real challenge lies in securing bipartisan support and implementing the necessary strategies to turn this vision into a reality. The Australian Greens have already indicated support for the plan. But the government and the opposition are yet to respond. The road map is ambitious and much needed vision for improving race relations, especially at a time of growing division and intolerance in our society. The ten-year timeframe for achieving its goals is undeniably challenging. Racism is a deeply entrenched problem and will also need longer-term strategies to resolve. The success of the framework hinges on the commitment and support of all Australians, from policymakers and community leaders to media organisations and everyday citizens. Ending racism require increased individual awareness, stronger collective action, persistence, and an unwavering dedication to dismantling racism at every turn. Climeon is pleased to announce that NovaAlgoma Cement Carriers (NACC) has placed an order for Climeon’s Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) waste heat recovery technology, HeatPower 300, to be installed on a new groundbreaking methanol dual-fuel cement carrier. This RINA-classed vessel will set a new benchmark for sustainable shipping in the cement industry. The HeatPower 300 unit will generate up to 300 kW of sustainable electricity on board the world’s largest cement carrier by harnessing low-grade waste heat from the engine cooling water and exhaust gases. By reclaiming energy that would otherwise be lost in conventional operations, this solution reduces fuel consumption and emissions, directly supporting NACC’s sustainability objectives. NovaAlgoma Cement Carrier “We are thrilled to collaborate with NACC on this pioneering vessel, which marks the first cement carrier to feature our HeatPower 300 system,” said Fredrik Thoren, EVP and Head of Marine at Climeon. “This collaboration underscores the flexibility of our technology in delivering both environmental and economic benefits across a broad range of vessel types.” “At NACC we’re committed to setting a standard for sustainable, energy-efficient operations,” said Francesco Costagliola, Technical Director at NovaAlgoma. “Integrating Climeon’s waste heat recovery technology not only supports our sustainability goals but also provides a practical way to meet increasingly stringent environmental regulations while enhancing operational efficiency.” Climeon Powering A Sustainable Future This installation supports the maritime industry’s transition to cleaner, more efficient technologies and fuels. Climeon’s HeatPower 300 captures engine waste heat, regardless of fuel type, providing both immediate and lasting economic and environmental benefits for NACC’s dual-fuel vessel. This partnership highlights Climeon and NACC’s shared commitment to advancing sustainability in the cement shipping sector. December 7: We’ll resist any military intimidation during pollsDALLAS – The home of Dallas Mavericks star Luka Doncic was targeted in a burglary on Friday, marking the latest incident in a string of break-ins affecting high-profile athletes. Dallas police confirmed to CBS News Texas that they responded to Doncic's home on Guernsey Lane around 10:30 p.m. The preliminary investigation indicates that unknown suspects entered the home and stole items, police said. The Mavericks star has not publically commented on the incident. In November, the NBA sent a memo urging players to enhance their home security when away due to the increase in burglaries, CBS Sports reported. The memo, acquired by the Associated Press, included recommendations such as updating alarm systems, securing valuables in safes, using protective guard services during road trips and having dogs as a security measure. The memo also stated that the FBI had linked the burglaries to well-organized "transnational South American Theft Groups" utilizing advanced techniques and technologies, including pre-surveillance, drones and signal-jamming devices. The FBI believes the crime ring primarily focuses on cash and items that can be resold on the black market, such as jewelry, watches, and luxury bags. In addition to Doncic, other targeted NBA players include Boston Celtics shooting guard Jaylen Brown, Minnesota Timberwolves guard Mike Conley and Milwaukee Bucks center Bobby Portis, according to CBS Sports. Portis reported that "most of my prized possessions" were stolen during the November incident at his home, and he offered a $40,000 reward for information leading to the recovery of the items. NFL athletes have also fallen victim, including Kansas City Chiefs stars Travis Kelce and Patrick Mahomes — targeted just days apart in October — and Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrows. The break-in at Doncic's home happened the same day an Associated Press source confirmed that the guard would be sidelined about a month before getting re-evaluated for a calf injury sustained in a Christmas Day loss to the Timberwolves. A person familiar with the situation reportedly told AP that Doncic had undergone an MRI on his strained left calf. Doncic's extended absence will likely disqualify the five-time All-NBA player from consideration for major awards, including MVP, AP reported. Prior to the Christmas Day injury, Doncic had already missed eight games, five of which were due to a sprained right wrist. Washington, Dec 19 (AP) The Senate passed a defence bill on Wednesday that authorises significant pay raises for junior enlisted service members, aims to counter China's growing power and boosts overall military spending to USD 895 billion while also stripping coverage of transgender medical treatments for children of military members. The annual defence authorisation bill usually gains strong bipartisan support and has not failed to pass Congress in nearly six decades, but the Pentagon policy measure in recent years has become a battleground for cultural issues. Republicans this year sought to tack on to the legislation priorities for social conservatives, contributing to a months-long negotiation over the bill and a falloff in support from Democrats. Still, the bill passed comfortably 85-14, sending it to President Joe Biden. Eleven senators who caucus with Democrats, as well as three Republicans, voted against the legislation. The bill "isn't perfect, but it still includes some very good things that Democrats fought for", said Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-NY, in a floor speech. "It has strong provisions to stand up against the Chinese Communist Party here on a national security basis." In the House, a majority of Democrats voted against the bill last week after House Speaker Mike Johnson insisted on adding the provision to ban the military health system from providing transgender medical care for children. The legislation easily passed by a vote of 281-140. Senate Republican leaders argued that its 1 per cent increase for defence spending was not enough, especially at a time of global unrest and challenges to American dominance. Senate Republicans had argued for a generational boost to defence spending this year, but are planning another push for more defence funding once they control the White House and Congress next year. "We are currently experiencing the most dangerous national security moments since World War II," said Republican Senator Roger Wicker, who will chair the Senate Armed Services Committee next year. He has pushed for larger boosts to defence funding that would break spending caps that were agreed to in the bipartisan deal to suspend the nation's debt ceiling last year. The annual defence authorisation bill directs key Pentagon policy, but it would still need to be backed up with an appropriations package. Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky said in a floor speech this week that without the topline increase, "major bill provisions like a pay raise for enlisted service members will come at the expense of investments in the critical weapons systems and munitions that deter conflict and keep them safe". The legislation provides for a 14.5 per cent pay raise for junior enlisted service members and a 4.5 per cent increase for others. Lawmakers said those were key to improving the quality of life of service members at a time when many military families rely on food banks and other government assistance programmes to make ends meet. "It includes major quality of life improvements, enhancing things like childcare, housing, medical services, employment support for military spouses and much more," said Senator Jack Reed, D-RI, who chairs the Senate Armed Services Committee. The legislation also directs resources towards a more confrontational approach to China, including establishing a fund that could be used to send military resources to Taiwan in much the same way that the US has backed Ukraine. It also invests in new military technologies, including artificial intelligence, and bolsters the US production of ammunition. The US has also moved in recent years to ban the military from purchasing Chinese products, and the defence bill extended that with prohibitions on Chinese goods from garlic in military commissaries to drone technology. The Chinese foreign ministry responded to that move last week by calling the bans laughable. "I do not think it could ever occur to garlic that it would pose a major threat to the US," said Mao Ning, a ministry spokeswoman. "From drones to cranes, from refrigerators to garlic, more and more Chinese-made products have been accused by the US of posing national security risks. But has the US shown any reliable evidence or rationale to back up those accusations?" But in Congress, Republican and Democratic lawmakers have been mostly united in their stance that China is a rising threat. Instead, it was culture war issues that divided lawmakers on the bill, which took months to negotiate. The Republican-controlled House had passed a version of the bill in June that would have banned the Defence Department's policy of reimbursing costs for service members who travel to another state for an abortion, ended gender affirming care for transgender troops and weeded out diversity initiatives in the military. Most of those provisions did not make it into the final package, though Republicans are expecting Donald Trump to make sweeping changes to Pentagon policy when he enters office in January. The bill also still prohibits funding for teaching critical race theory in the military and prohibits TRICARE health plans from covering gender dysphoria treatment for children under 18 if that treatment could result in "sterilisation". (AP) RC (This story has not been edited by THE WEEK and is auto-generated from PTI)NoneJapanese automakers Nissan Motor Corp and Honda Motor Co confirmed Wednesday that they are discussing closer collaboration but denied reports they have decided on a merger. Nissan’s share price soared nearly 24% in Tokyo after reports citing unnamed sources said it might merge with Honda to form the world’s third-largest automaking group. Honda’s share price fell as much as 3%. Nissan alliance member Mitsubishi Motors Corp. is also part of the talks. Trading in Nissan’s shares was suspended but then resumed after the companies jointly issued a statement saying they were “considering various possibilities for future collaboration, but no decisions have been made.” The ascent of Chinese automakers is rattling the industry at a time when manufacturers are struggling to shift from fossil fuel-driven vehicles to electrics. Relatively inexpensive EVs from China's BYD, Great Wall and Nio are eating into the market shares of U.S. and Japanese car companies in China and elsewhere. Japanese automakers have lagged behind big rivals in EVs and are now trying to cut costs and make up for lost time. Nissan, Honda and Mitsubishi announced in August that they will share components for electric vehicles like batteries and jointly research software for autonomous driving to adapt better to dramatic changes in the auto industry centered around electrification. A preliminary agreement between Honda, Japan's second-largest automaker, and Nissan, third largest, was announced in March. A merger could result in a behemoth worth about $55 billion based on the market capitalization of all three automakers. Joining forces would help the smaller Japanese automakers add scale to compete with Japan's market leader Toyota Motor Corp. and with Germany’s Volkswagen AG. Toyota itself has technology partnerships with Japan's Mazda Motor Corp. and Subaru Corp. Nissan has truck-based body-on-frame large SUVs such as the Armada and Infiniti QX80 that Honda doesn't have, with large towing capacities and good off-road performance, said Sam Fiorani, vice president of AutoForecast Solutions. Nissan also has years of experience building batteries and electric vehicles, and gas-electric hybird powertrains that could help Honda in developing its own EVs and next generation of hybrids, he said. “Nissan does have some product segments where Honda doesn’t currently play,” that a merger or partnership could help, said Sam Abuelsamid, a Detroit-area automotive industry analsyt. While Nissan's electric Leaf and Ariya haven't sold well in the U.S., they're solid vehicles, Fiorani said. “They haven't been resting on their laurels, and they have been developing this technology,” he said. “They have new products coming that could provide a good platform for Honda for its next generation.” Nissan said last month that it was slashing 9,000 jobs, or about 6% of its global work force, and reducing global production capacity by 20% after reporting a quarterly loss of 9.3 billion yen ($61 million). Earlier this month it reshuffled its management and its chief executive, Makoto Uchida, took a 50% pay cut to take responsibility for the financial woes, saying Nissan needed to become more efficient and respond better to market tastes, rising costs and other global changes. Fitch Ratings recently downgraded Nissan's credit outlook to “negative,” citing worsening profitability, partly due to price cuts in the North American market. But it noted that it has a strong financial structure and solid cash reserves that amounted to 1.44 trillion yen ($9.4 billion). Nissan's share price has fallen to the point where it is considered something of a bargain. A report in the Japanese financial magazine Diamond said talks with Honda gained urgency after the Taiwan maker of iPhones Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., better known as Foxconn, began exploring a possible acquisition of Nissan as part of its push into the EV sector. The company has struggled for years following a scandal that began with the arrest of its former chairman Carlos Ghosn in late 2018 on charges of fraud and misuse of company assets, allegations that he denies. He eventually was released on bail and fled to Lebanon. Honda reported its profits slipped nearly 20% in the first half of the April-March fiscal year from a year earlier, as sales suffered in China. Toyota made 11.5 million vehicles in 2023, while Honda rolled out 4 million and Nissan produced 3.4 million. Mitsubishi Motors made just over 1 million. Even after a merger Toyota would remain the leading Japanese automaker. All the global automakers are facing potential shocks if President-elect Donald Trump follows through on threats to raise or impose tariffs on imports of foreign products, even from allies like Japan and neighboring countries like Canada and Mexico. Nissan is among the major car companies that have adjusted their supply chains to include vehicles assembled in Mexico. Meanwhile, analysts say there is an “affordability shift” taking place across the industry, led by people who feel they cannot afford to pay nearly $50,000 for a new vehicle. In American, a vital market for companies like Nissan, Honda and Toyota, that's forcing automakers to consider lower pricing, which will eat further into industry profits. AP Auto Writer Tom Krisher contributed to this report from Detroit.

The Cape Coral Police Department in Florida responded to a Target branch located at 1890 NE Pine Island Road in Cape Coral last Wednesday regarding a past retail theft that occurred on Oct. 30, according to a statement from the Cape Coral Police Department. "Loss Prevention at Target stated that on October 30, 2024, an unknown female entered the store and selected items listed for sale," police said. "Once at the self-checkout register, the female suspect did not scan the items' barcodes, instead scanning a false barcode with cheaper prices." In total, 16 items of miscellaneous household goods and clothing were stolen with a total retail value of $500.32, which was verified by officers via Target's security cameras. In an attempt to help identify the suspect through public assistance, the Cape Coral Police Department's Facebook and Instagram accounts posted the female's picture, describing her as appearing to be "approximately 20-35 years old, had long black hair, and was wearing a tan shirt, tan pants, and glasses." An anonymous caller who saw the post on social media subsequently contacted the police and gave the possible identification for the suspect as Marlena Velez and informed them of her social media profiles. "Officers then found Marlena's TikTok account, which documents her getting ready on October 30, 2024, in the same outfit and glasses and going to Target," police said. "Marlena documents herself picking out items inside the store and placing them in her car after exiting the store. Marlena appears to be a content creator with almost 300,000 followers." Velez has since been arrested and taken to the Lee County Jail and charged with petit theft of less than $750. The investigation is currently ongoing.

Ministers warned of cuts as ‘every pound’ of spending to face reviewThe Chinese communist regime has replaced its political commissar for its ground forces amid a purge in the country’s defense sector that has raised questions about the military’s modernization efforts. Gen. Chen Hui has been appointed as the political commissar of the Army of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA), according to a statement released by China’s defense ministry on Dec. 23. In the hierarchical structure of the PLA, an army force controlled by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), the political commissar is responsible for ensuring political loyalty among service members and overseeing personnel issue. Chen succeeds Gen. Qin Shutong, who had held this position since at least January 2022. As of the time of publication, no official explanation has been provided regarding Qin’s removal, leaving his current role and whereabouts shrouded in mystery. Qin, 61, was absent from the Dec. 23 ceremony where Chen was promoted to the rank of general, according to footage aired by China Central Television (CCTV). Defying customary practice, also missing from the event was the commander of the PLA’s ground forces, Gen. Li Qiaoming, fueling speculation among outside observers amid an ongoing anti-corruption campaign. For example, as the authorities look into corruption in a particular sector in the defense industry, it “can have the effect of slowing them down as they try to conduct thorough investigations and try to understand the depth and the extent of corruption in a particular case,” the official said. Nonetheless, Beijing is unlikely to scale back its anti-graft campaign, the officials said, as Xi has made such a drive a “hallmark of his tenure.” Ely Ratner, U.S. assistant secretary of defense for Indo-Pacific security affairs, has cautioned that the anti-corruption campaign could lead to “paralysis” within lower levels of the military who may fear attracting scrutiny.BridgingApps® and Sentara Health Plans Creating Transition Tool for Children and Youth with ...

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Fifth-year defensive tackle Tershawn Wharton has surged forward this season. He’s started more games (seven) than in the rest of his career combined (three), and he produced one of the Kansas City Chiefs’ season highlights with his fourth-down sack in Las Vegas to punctuate an epic goal-line stand. And he tends to be found in the middle of pivotal scrums, like he was against the Raiders on Friday as Nick Bolton made a game-saving fumble recovery. To understand a bit about how and why, well, consider what might be called the most important play of the season: The alert, instinctive way he came to catch 13-year-old Andy Radzavicz as the boy fell headfirst out of the stands at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Nov. 24. “They say I’m a hero,” Wharton said in an interview with The Kansas City Star, spoken in such a tone as to suggest that he just did what anyone would. But look closely at the start of the viral TikTok video and you see something revealing about both the person and the player – who happened to be looking up because he likes to give his gloves away after games. “His eyes just get kind of big, and he darts over,” Jay Radzavicz, Andy’s father, said Monday in a phone interview with The Star. “We had a good guy in a good position.” ‘A different way to meet him’ In fact, the undrafted free agent out of Missouri S&T made his way to the NFL in large part because of a soul and heart that make him relentless – something coach Andy Reid noted earlier this season when he said “nobody practices harder, nobody works harder than ‘Turk’,” and that persistence has paid off for him. Those traits certainly paid off for the Radzavicz family, now forever grateful to Wharton for what he did to save Andy from a potentially serious injury. As Wharton reflected on the moment in an interview after the Chiefs’ 19-17 victory over the Raiders on Friday, he recalled hearing someone calling his name. Then he felt fear himself as he saw the boy wearing a Bolton No. 32 jersey tumbling from the stands above the Chiefs exit. So he barged through a couple security guards, who had their back to the stands. “I don’t think they knew what I was doing,” Wharton said with a laugh. “So I kind of had to just lay out a little bit and push them (back).” You can’t see any of that in the video that Jay jokingly has likened to the Zapruder film. And you don’t get to see that Wharton asked Andy if he was OK and helped hoist him back into the stands and somehow still had the presence of mind to give Andy his gloves. The football-crazy family that lives near Jacksonville got to express their gratitude more directly on Friday at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium. As part of another trip spanning the country for NFL and college games, they’d already arranged to be at the game. But through word of mouth, the Chiefs organization discovered they would be attending and arranged pregame field passes and let Wharton know where they’d be. “It was a different way to meet him,” Wharton deadpanned with a smile, “other than when he was falling.” The family gave Wharton a Missouri S&T sweatshirt; Wharton gave them the jersey he wore in Charlotte and signed it in a few different places on the numbers: “To Andy” “Go Chiefs!!!” “TW#98” “Strive for Greatness” “Always put God First” “Love those who love you” Count Andy in the latter group. “He’s my favorite by far now,” Andy said. Holiday roads Jay Radzavicz was raised in upstate New York and had an early fascination with football. Around the time he was in eighth grade, he remembers a family cross-country drive in a Griswold-esque paneled station wagon highlighted by stops in Columbus, Ohio, and Manhattan, Kansas, just so he could stare at the empty stadiums and imagine them on game days. He’d become far more acquainted with the area and grew to be a Chiefs fan when he was a football graduate assistant at Central Missouri State and during his 11 years in Pittsburg, Kansas, where he was a reporter, producer and sports director for KOAM-TV. The imagination and wanderlust for sports stoked in his youth stayed with Jay Radzavicz, who later spent 20 years as a producer with the Golf Channel and now runs his own production company. So traveling for events has been a big part of family life for Jay Radzavicz, his wife, Maureen (LIV Golf’s director of tournament media operations) and their sons Andy and Asher. By Jay’s estimate, Andy probably has been to about 40 NFL games by now, including a number in Jacksonville, and several dozen college games. While the boys have different NFL allegiances (Asher is a Bills guy and secured a glove from Josh Allen on Sunday night), they are aligned when it comes to their favorite college team: Kansas State. In 2020, Andy was elated to get gloves from one of his idols, Deuce Vaughn, after Kansas State’s 69-31 loss to Texas. “Because he’s short (5-foot-5), and I’m short, too,” Andy said. “He inspired me.” (For the record, Andy said he wasn’t sure how tall he is right now but was reminded by his father he was about a foot shorter than the other receivers on his team this fall.) That 2020 game was part of a combo trip to see the Chiefs against the Broncos, one of a number of such travels they set up a couple times a year. Last week, for instance, Jay and the boys flew on Thursday after Thanksgiving dinner and took in the Chiefs game on Friday. Then they drove to Ames, Iowa, for the Kansas State game on Saturday and rather remarkably made the 870-mile drive to Buffalo for the Sunday night game. The boys had hoped to stop to see Notre Dame Stadium and Toledo’s Glass Bowl on the way. But they had to stay on track to get to Wally World, er, Highmark Stadium, on time. ‘You’ve got to root for him’ Andy’s first game at Arrowhead was the 37-31 overtime loss to New England in the 2018 season AFC Championship Game. “I liked the experience,” he said from the airport in Buffalo on Monday, “and I wanted to be a Chiefs fan.” At the time, Wharton had just finished his senior year at Division II Missouri S&T, where he thrived in every way after not attracting any Division I offers coming out of University City High outside St. Louis. Wharton, who studied psychology at the school best known for engineering, was both a dominant player and standout young man there. Andy Ball, then the assistant head coach calling the offense, still raves about Wharton’s tremendous athleticism, phenomenal “motor” and the selfless and deeply caring teammate he was. “He’s such a humble good guy,” said Ball, the school’s head coach since 2022. “If you know him, you’ve got to root for him.” All the more so, or at least all the more so for more people, as Wharton’s career has rebooted after he missed most of the 2022 season with a torn ACL and was working his way back in 2023. And after making that vital postgame play that suddenly made him national news in about every media outlet imaginable. When it happened, Jay was some 30 or so yards away to give Andy room to converge among a group of kids as he so often does to get autographs, a high-five or a glove. (Or baseballs, for that matter: The boys have a bin full from MLB games). By now, Andy knows how to handle himself. But this time, something was different as he went down the stands to “try to meet all the Chiefs players” and leaned in to call out to Wharton and running back Carson Steele: He thought one railing was extending right into another. Only when he leaned his hip into it did he discover they didn’t connect. “I just, like, got off-balance,” Andy said, “and I just toppled over.” It was so sudden he almost didn’t have time to be really scared of what it would have been like to land on his head. For that matter, by the time Wharton was handing him back up he was worrying about something else: whether he was going to be in trouble for falling on the field. It all happened so fast that Jay didn’t really realize the gravity of it until the TikTok video emerged in the next day or so. Next thing you know, it’s featured on “The Pat McAfee Show” and “Today” and “Inside Edition.” “It just kind of snowballed from there,” Jay said. All because a potential tragedy was averted by “a good guy in a good position.”

It's just been slowly, slowly grinding down ever since,” said Michael Currie, senior investment adviser at TD Wealth. Some of the market direction Monday was driven by two separate news stories out of China, he said. “The (Chinese) central bank says they're starting to buy gold again, and they're looking to loosen their monetary policy a bit. So that helped oil a lot, helped gold a lot,” said Currie. China also said it’s investigating semiconductor giant Nvidia over suspected violations of anti-monopoly laws, which sent the company’s stock lower. Nvidia’s share price was down 2.6 per cent Monday at US$138.81. Otherwise, “it’s all about interest rates today,” said Currie. In the U.S., investors are awaiting the latest update on inflation later in the week. However, given that the slowing job market is more of a concern for the U.S. Federal Reserve at this point, the data is unlikely to change what investors currently expect from the Fed next week, said Currie: a quarter-percentage-point cut. “Unless there's something really crazy out of the inflation numbers, there’s no reason to expect anything different is going to happen next week,” he said. In Canada, where the central bank is gearing up for a rate decision Wednesday, a larger half-point cut is more likely, he said. Expectations for a bigger cut rose after last week’s jobs report, which saw the unemployment rate jump to 6.8 per cent in November. “The more we're cutting rates, especially the accelerated rate compared to the States, the more that just keeps beating up our dollar,” said Currie. He expects more buzz in the coming months about the divergence between interest rates in Canada and the U.S. as the loonie continues to weaken. “We're seeing it already, and as the gap gets bigger, it'll become more of a story.” However, Currie noted the TSX briefly touched an all-time high earlier in the day. “Basically since the US election, it's just been a non-stop rally,” he said. The Canadian dollar traded for 70.77 cents US compared with 70.74 cents US on Friday. The January crude oil contract was up US$1.17 at US$68.37 per barrel and the January natural gas contract was up 11 cents at US$3.18 per mmBTU. The February gold contract was up US$26.20 at US$2,685.80 an ounce and the March copper contract was up eight cents at US$4.28 a pound. — With files from The Associated Press This report by The Canadian Press was first published Dec. 9, 2024. MOTHER of three, Ruth Windi was among the 142 Grade 12 students from the FODE Central graduating from the Social Science strand yesterday at the Rita Flynn complex, Port Moresby. Mrs Windi from Birop in upper Mendi, Southern Highlands Province, is proof that it is never too late for mothers to continue their education and pursue their dreams. For nearly two decades, she worked diligently at a bank, but after 19 years in the industry, Ruth decided to return to school to finish what she started. Mrs Windi is married and has three children. Her eldest son is studying at a University in South Dakota, USA, as a STEM student. Her daughter has completed Grade 10 this year, and her youngest daughter is in grade five. Despite juggling the responsibilities of being a mother, wife, and full-time employee with Togoba Finance Group, Windi decided to finish her high school education. She worked with the bank for 19 years and resigned in 2020, then she pushed through to grades 11 and 12 at the FODE Central while also working with a finance group, and yesterday she finally graduated. “Being a working mother, especially in such a demanding role, is exhausting, when I come home, I’m often tired, but I use the night to study. It’s not easy, but education is something that no one can take away from me. I need to finish it,” Mrs Windi said. Despite challenges at home, Mrs Windi has remained determined. Her family has occasionally questioned her dedication to studying, saying, “You have enough work to do. You don’t need to study anymore.” But Mrs Windi usually tells them: “Education doesn’t stop, I have to continue.” Her message to other mothers facing similar challenges is, “Don’t give up, be a mother, be a student, and continue to strive for something better.”None

DENVER (AP) — So you're the most valuable player of that annual Thanksgiving Day backyard flag football game. Or played tackle football on any level. Or ran track. Or dabbled in basketball. Or toyed with any sport, really. Well, this may be just for you: USA Football is holding talent identification camps all over the country to find that next flag football star. It's “America’s Got Talent” meets “American Idol,” with the stage being the field and the grand prize a chance to compete for a spot on a national team. Because it’s never too early to start planning for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, where flag football will make its Summer Games debut. Know this, though — it's not an easy team to make. The men's and women's national team rosters are at “Dream Team” status given the men’s side has captured six of the last seven world championships and the women three in a row. To remain on top, the sport's national governing body is scouring every football field, park, track, basketball court and gym to find hidden talent to cultivate. USA Football has organized camps and tryouts from coast to coast for anyone ages 11 to 23. There are more than a dozen sites set up so far, ranging from Dallas (Sunday) to Chicago (Dec. 14) to Tampa (March 29) to Los Angeles (TBD) and the Boston area (April 27), where it will be held at Gillette Stadium, home of the New England Patriots. The organization has already partnered with the NFL on flag football initiatives and programs. The numbers have been through the roof, with engagement on social media platforms increasing by 86% since flag football was announced as an Olympic invitational sport in October 2023 . The participation of boys and girls ages 6 to 17 in flag football last year peaked at more than 1.6 million, according to USA Football research. “We pride ourselves on elevating the gold standard across the sport,” said Eric Mayes, the managing director of the high performance and national teams for USA Football. “We want to be the best in the world — and stay the best in the world.” Flag football was one of five new sports added to the LA28 program. The already soaring profile of American football only figures to be enhanced by an Olympic appearance. Imagine, say, a few familiar faces take the field, too. Perhaps even NFL stars such as Tyreek Hill or Patrick Mahomes, maybe even past pro football greats donning a flag belt for a country to which they may have ties. Soon after flag football's inclusion, there was chatter of NFL players possibly joining in on the fun. Of course, there are logistical issues to tackle before their inclusion at the LA Olympics, which open July 14, 2028. Among them, training camp, because the Olympics will be right in the middle of it. The big question is this: Will owners permit high-priced players to duck out for a gold-medal pursuit? No decisions have yet been made on the status of NFL players for the Olympics. For now, it's simply about growing the game. There are currently 13 states that sanction girls flag football as a high school varsity sport. Just recently, the Pittsburgh Steelers and Philadelphia Eagles helped pave the way to get it adopted in Pennsylvania. Around the world, it's catching on, too. The women's team from Japan took third at the recent word championships, while one of the best players on the planet is Mexico quarterback Diana Flores . “Could flag football globally become the new soccer? That’s something to aspire to," said Stephanie Kwok , the NFL's vice president of flag football. This type of flag football though, isn't your Thanksgiving Day game with family and friends. There's a learning curve. And given the small roster sizes, versatility is essential. Most national team members need to be a version of Colorado’s two-way standout and Heisman hopeful Travis Hunter. Forget bump-and-run coverage, too, because there's no contact. None. That took some adjusting for Mike Daniels, a defensive back out of West Virginia who earned a rookie minicamp invitation with the Cleveland Browns in 2017. “If a receiver is running around, I’m thinking, ‘OK, I can kind of bump him here and there and nudge him,’” Daniels explained. “They’re like, ‘No, you can’t.’ I’m just like, ‘So I’m supposed to let this guy just run?!’ I really rebelled at the idea at first. But you learn.” The competition for an Olympic roster spot is going to be fierce because only 10 players are expected to make a squad. The best 10 will earn it, too, as credentials such as college All-American or NFL All-Pro take a backseat. “I would actually love" seeing NFL players try out, said Daniels, who's also a personal trainer in Miami. “I’m not going to let you just waltz in here, thinking, ‘I played NFL football for five years. I’m popular. I have a huge name.’ I’m still better than you and I'm going to prove it — until you prove otherwise.” Around the house, Bruce Mapp constantly swivels his hips when turning a hallway corner or if his daughter tries to reach for a hug. It’s his way of working on avoiding a “defender” trying to snare the flag. That approach has earned the receiver out of Coastal Carolina four gold medals with USA Football. The 31-year-old fully plans on going for more gold in Los Angeles. “You grow up watching Usain Bolt (win gold) and the ‘Redeem Team’ led by Kobe Bryant win a gold medal, you're always thinking, ‘That's insane.' Obviously, you couldn't do it in your sport, because I played football," said Mapp, who owns a food truck in the Dallas area. "With the Olympics approaching, that (gold medal) is what my mind is set on." It's a common thought, which is why everything — including talent camps — starts now. “Everybody thinks, ‘Yeah, the U.S. just wins,’” Daniels said. “But we work hard all the time. We don’t just walk in. We don’t just get off the bus thinking, ‘We’re going to beat people.’” AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/nfl and https://twitter.com/AP_NFLTUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Aden Holloway established career highs of 26 points and eight 3-pointers to help No. 5 Alabama roll to a 105-82 nonconference men's basketball victory over South Dakota State on Sunday. Freshman Labaron Philon had the best game of his young career with 21 points and six assists for the Crimson Tide (11-2). Mark Sears had 20 points, including 6-for-14 3-point shooting. Grant Nelson added 17 points and eight rebounds and scored the game's first eight points. ADVERTISEMENT Alabama coach Nate Oats has sometimes been critical of his squad's defensive effort and the second half against the Jackrabbits will provide more fuel for that concern. Alabama did connect on a season-best 19 3-point shots but also attempted 55 long-range shots (34.5 percent). The Tide also saw South Dakota State put up 49 points in the second half to keep the score relatively competitive. Alabama claimed a fifth straight win with its third 100-plus point performance of the season. South Dakota State (9-6) was led by Washington State transfer Oscar Cluff, who had 21 points and 15 rebounds, including seven offensive boards. The Jackrabbits connected on 11-for-26 3-point shooting (42.3 percent), with guard Isaac Lindsey scoring 11 points, including 3-for-6 on 3-point tries. After Nelson's personal 8-0 run to open the game, South Dakota State pulled with 16-14 on a shot by William Whorton with 11:45 to play in the opening half. But Alabama then broke the game open, going on a 24-3 run culminating in a Holloway 3-pointer to give the Tide a 40-17 edge with 7:37 left in the opening half. South Dakota State trailed 57-33 at halftime, but played a much more competitive second half offensively by connecting on 17 of 33 shots (51.5 percent). Alabama will open 2025 with a home game against No. 12 Oklahoma on Saturday. South Dakota State will host Summit League opponent Denver on Thursday. Indonesia's BRICS Agenda: 2 Reasons Prabowo's Foreign Policy Contrasts With Jokowi's #Indonesia's #BRICS #Agenda: #Reasons #Prabowo's #Foreign #Policy #Contrasts #Jokowi's #Inflation #Currency #US #Dollar #Exchange #RecessionBoston Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow started the offseason by emphasizing the team's need to bolster the starting pitching staff. The front office has followed through with multiple noteworthy moves before the New Year. Boston's biggest deal thus far was in exchange for prospects Kyle Teel, Braden Montgomery, Chase Meidroth, and Wikelman Gonzalez. Crochet gives the Red Sox a bona fide ace, something the rotation has lacked for the last several seasons. In free agency, the Red Sox have signed southpaw Patrick Sandoval and righty Walker Buehler. Both veterans come with injury concerns but add tremendous upside to Boston's previously lackluster rotation. So, what could the Red Sox' full starting rotation look like in 2025? Who could be the odd man out? Here's a closer look at the projected group: If Crochet proves more than a one-year wonder, he'll give the Red Sox a legitimate Cy Young contender atop their rotation. The 25-year-old has flat-out filthy stuff, including one of the best fastballs in the sport which averages 97.2 mph and tops out around 100 mph. A former reliever, Crochet took the hill 32 times last year during his first season in the White Sox rotation. He posted a 3.58 ERA (2.69 FIP) with 209 strikeouts and only 33 walks across 146 innings for the 121-loss ballclub. Chicago lightened the southpaw's workload in the second half of the campaign as he missed the entire 2022 season due to Tommy John surgery and pitched only 12.2 innings in 2023. Fear not though, Sox fans. Crochet doesn't expect to require an innings limit in 2025. “In terms of how long my leash will be, I hope to not even be wearing a collar come second half next year,” Crochet told reporters during his introductory press conference. Houck wasn't even expected to be part of Boston's 2024 rotation, but he found his way in following Lucas Giolito and Garrett Whitlock's season-ending injuries. The 28-year-old stepped up, emerging as the Red Sox' de facto ace with a 3.12 ERA and 154 strikeouts in 30 starts (178.2 innings). His efforts earned him his first career All-Star nod. If Houck can duplicate his 2024 numbers, he'll give the Red Sox' new-look starting rotation a formidable 1-2 punch. The Red Sox to a one-year, $21.05 million contract on Monday. It's a low-risk, high-reward pickup for a pitching staff that desperately needed some star power. Buehler is a two-time All-Star with plenty of postseason experience, including World Series titles with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2020 and 2024. He placed fourth in Cy Young award voting in 2021 but had a down season in 2022 before undergoing Tommy John surgery that forced him to miss all of 2023. In 2024, Buehler struggled in the regular season with a 5.38 ERA across 16 starts. He found his groove in the playoffs, however, posting a 3.60 ERA (2.77 FIP) in four appearances (three starts). He didn't allow a run in his six innings pitched during the World Series. If healthy, Buehler adds a ton of upside to Boston's talented rotation. He's a fan favorite in L.A. and will become one in Boston if he can help end the club's postseason drought. Bello enters his fourth big-league season still looking to break out. The former top prospect has shown flashes of brilliance but has yet to live up to the lofty expectations that led Boston to s before the 2024 season. While his 2024 numbers leave plenty to be desired, Bello was one of three Sox starters to make 30 starts. With injury concerns throughout the rest of the rotation, he'll be counted on to do the same in 2025. Boston will hope Bello can pick up where he left off in the second half of the 2024 season, when he posted a 3.00 ERA in August and a 3.55 ERA in September. It's unclear whether Giolito will be ready for Opening Day, but he joins the list until further notice. The veteran righty signed with Boston last offseason but didn't make an appearance in 2024 after undergoing Tommy John surgery. Assuming he enters 2025 without any setbacks, Giolito gives the Red Sox another high-upside starter. The 30-year-old was an All-Star in 2019 and earned Cy Young votes in each season from 2019 to 2021. Giolito's biggest bugaboo is the long ball. He allowed a whopping 41 home runs during a rough 2023 season spent with the White Sox, Los Angeles Angels, and Cleveland Guardians. Red Sox pitching coach Andrew Bailey will be tasked with helping him cut that number significantly in 2025. Crawford looked like the Red Sox' "ace" to start the 2024 season but eventually regressed to the mean, finishing the year with a 4.36 ERA and 4.65 FIP. He led the majors with 34 homers allowed. The way Crawford ended the campaign may have cost him a spot in the rotation for 2025. With the additions of Crochet and Buehler, plus Giolito's return from injury, someone has to be the odd man out. Don't be surprised if Crawford is traded before Opening Day. If not, he could be moved to the bullpen and used sparingly as a spot-starter. Starting pitching depth appears to be a strength for Boston as we look ahead to 2025. There are several options if any of the current pieces of the injury-prone rotation go down. Richard Fitts, a top prospect acquired from the New York Yankees in last year's Alex Verdugo deal, highlights the list. The 25-year-old notched a 1.74 ERA across his first four big-league starts. Winckowski has primarily pitched out of the bullpen but made six spot starts for Boston last season. The Red Sox will hope to use him solely as a reliever in 2025, but he's another arm they can turn to if necessary. Criswell was a pleasant surprise after signing a $1 million contract with the club last offseason. The 28-year-old posted a 4.08 ERA in 26 appearances (18 starts). Whitlock should be used out of the bullpen in his return from an elbow injury, but he could step up as an occasional spot starter. He had a 1.96 ERA in four starts before having his 2024 campaign end prematurely. Priester was acquired from the Pittsburgh Pirates at the 2024 trade deadline in exchange for infield prospect Nick Yorke. A former top prospect himself, Priester only adds to the rotation's high upside despite entering 2025 with an uncertain role. Sandoval is this year's James Paxton for Boston. The 28-year-old is expected to miss the first half of the 2025 season as he recovers from Tommy John surgery. The Red Sox on Friday. Over six seasons with the Angels, he enjoyed his most productive campaign in 2022 as he posted a 2.91 ERA with 15 strikeouts in 148.2 innings. He has a 4.01 ERA across 107 games (100 starts).

A Connecticut couple has been charged in Minnesota with being part of a shoplifting ring suspected of stealing around $1 million in goods across the country from the upscale athletic wear retailer Lululemon. Jadion Anthony Richards, 44, and Akwele Nickeisha Lawes-Richards, 45, both of Danbury, Connecticut, were charged this month with one felony count of organized retail theft. Both went free last week after posting bail bonds of $100,000 for him and $30,000 for her, court records show. They're due back in Ramsey County District Court in St. Paul on Dec. 16. According to the criminal complaints, a Lululemon investigator had been tracking the pair even before police first confronted them on Nov. 14 at a store in suburban Roseville. The investigator told police the couple were responsible for hundreds of thousands of dollars in losses across the country, the complaints said. They would steal items and make fraudulent returns, it said. Police found suitcases containing more than $50,000 worth of Lululemon clothing when they searched the couple's hotel room in Bloomington, the complaint said. RELATED STORY | Florida social media influencer arrested for stealing from Target According to the investigator, they were also suspected in thefts from Lululemon stores in Colorado, Utah, New York and Connecticut, the complaint said. Within Minnesota, they were also accused of thefts at stores in Minneapolis and the suburbs of Woodbury, Edina and Minnetonka. The investigator said the two were part of a group that would usually travel to a city and hit Lululemon stores there for two days, return to the East Coast to exchange the items without receipts for new items, take back the new items with the return receipts for credit card refunds, then head back out to commit more thefts, the complaint said. In at least some of the thefts, it said, Richards would enter the store first and buy one or two cheap items. He'd then return to the sales floor where, with help from Lawes-Richards, they would remove a security sensor from another item and put it on one of the items he had just purchased. Lawes-Richards and another woman would then conceal leggings under their clothing. They would then leave together. When the security sensors at the door went off, he would offer staff the bag with the items he had bought, while the women would keep walking out, fooling the staff into thinking it was his sensor that had set off the alarm, the complaint said. Richards' attorney declined to comment. Lawes-Richards' public defender did not immediately return a call seeking comment Monday. "This outcome continues to underscore our ongoing collaboration with law enforcement and our investments in advanced technology, team training and investigative capabilities to combat retail crime and hold offenders accountable," Tristen Shields, Lululemon's vice president of asset protection, said in a statement. "We remain dedicated to continuing these efforts to address and prevent this industrywide issue." The two are being prosecuted under a state law enacted last year that seeks to crack down on organized retail theft. One of its chief authors, Sen. Ron Latz, of St. Louis Park, said 34 states already had organized retail crime laws on their books. "I am glad to see it is working as intended to bring down criminal operations," Latz said in a statement. "This type of theft harms retailers in myriad ways, including lost economic activity, job loss, and threats to worker safety when crime goes unaddressed. It also harms consumers through rising costs and compromised products being resold online." Two Minnesota women were also charged under the new law in August. They were accused of targeting a Lululemon store in Minneapolis.Jimmy Carter, the 39th US president, has died at 100
